Investigation of the relationship between structural damage and hearing impairment based on the whole ear model.

BACKGROUND: With the existing experimental techniques, it is unable to measure the overall structural vibration of the human ear, which is difficult to reflect the relationship between hearing and ear structures. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: The overall biomechanical behaviour of the whole ear structure during sound perception is described. METHODS: Based on CT scanning data and knowledge of ear physiology, a 3D whole ear numerical model was developed that conforms to the actual physiological environment of the human body. RESULTS: The outer ear canal (EC) has an amplifying effect on sound conduction.

Polycarbonate urethane - poly (2-ethyl 2-oxazoline) based electrospun graft material for tympanic membrane perforation therapy.

Tympanic membrane perforation is a common condition that can lead to hearing loss and recurrent infections. Though acute perforations heal spontaneously, chronic perforations require surgical intervention to restore membrane function. Current therapeutic techniques require surgery under anaesthesia and necessitate an incision for collecting graft material when autologous tissue is employed. Therefore, it is essential to find a safer, cost-effective alternative to tympanic membrane perforation treatment that uses non-surgical procedures. This work aims to fabricate a novel, biocompatible, non-d

Functional Outcomes of Tympanoplasty Based on Graft Position: Medial Versus Lateral to the Malleus Handle.

OBJECTIVES: This study compared the functional and anatomical outcomes of medial versus lateral graft placement techniques in type I tympanoplasty, focusing on hearing improvement and residual perforation rates. Tympanoplasty is a common surgical intervention for tympanic membrane (TM) perforations aimed at improving hearing and achieving tympanic closure. Debate continues regarding the optimal graft placement-medial or lateral to the handle of the malleus-for superior postoperative outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective comparative study was conducted on 48 patients aged 15 to 50 years with cent

TrkB activation mitigates blast-induced cochlear pathology and promotes auditory recovery in a compressed-air blast model.

Blast-induced hearing loss (BIHL) is a prevalent form of sensory neurotrauma resulting from military and occupational blast exposure. However, effective post-injury interventions remain limited, and progress is hindered by challenges in delivering therapeutics to the injured cochlea. In this study, we developed a reproducible compressed-air blast mouse model with quantified output characteristics and evaluated a localized post-blast TrkB activation strategy using 7,8-dihydroxyflavone (7,8-DHF) delivered to the cochlea via poly(lactide-co-glycolide)-graft-polyethylenimine (PgP) nanoparticles.
