Situation models support referential prediction at 36 months of age.

Adults generate causally structured situation models during comprehension and use them to predict upcoming referents. In an eye-tracked comprehension task, 36-month-olds (N = 115) did the same, using story-provided information to predict which character could plausibly be mentioned next. In critical sentences, such as "She asked the goose with the boots to play with her," children treated "the goose" as unambiguous even in a story with two geese, looking toward the target animal before disambiguating information arrived if one goose was described as having left the scene earlier in the story.

Cochlear implants in adults: outcomes in prolonged auditory deprivation.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate outcomes following cochlear implantation (CI) in postlinguistically deaf adults with prolonged auditory deprivation. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 95 patients who underwent CI between 2020 and 2022. Inclusion criteria were age ≥18 years. Main outcome measures included the pure-tone average across speech frequencies (PTA4), speech perception scores (monosyllabic words and sentences), and the Categories of Auditory Performance II (CAP-II). Correlation and regression analyses examined associations between auditory deprivation and postoperative outcome

Genotype-Phenotype Relationships in Patients Carrying Biallelic FDXR Pathogenic Variants-New Cases and Systematic Review.

Biallelic pathogenic FDXR variations were identified in 2017 as being responsible for sensorial neuropathies. The first reported patients suffered from auditory and optic sensorineural impairments (ANOA, MIM #617717). Since then, many publications have described various phenotypes including peripheral and central nervous systems impairments (MMDS9B, MIM #620887). This is consistent with the role of the encoded protein ferredoxin reductase (FDXR) as one of the actors of iron-sulfur proteins synthesis in mitochondria. Ophthalmologic and neurologic symptoms have often been reported, but little is

Teacher reports of ASL literacy instruction in deaf education.

The development of American Sign Language (ASL) literacy (or signacy) in deaf students is influenced by the exposure and instruction they receive, yet research on current ASL teaching practices remains limited. This study investigates how teachers in deaf education approach ASL literacy instruction through a nationwide survey and focus groups. The research explored six key areas: curriculum and standards, instructional methods, time allocation, genre instruction, and teacher preparation. Findings indicate that while ASL literacy instruction is recognized as an important component of bilingual

A narrative review on cost considerations in early intervention for deaf and/or hard-of-hearing children in Africa.

Early intervention (EI) is essential for the language, social, and educational development of deaf and/or hard-of-hearing (DHH) children. In African countries, however, the implementation of EI remains significantly constrained by cost considerations and systemic service gaps. This narrative review synthesizes findings from 26 peer-reviewed publications to explore how cost influences access to and sustainability of EI services in Africa. Seven interrelated themes were identified: (i) high out-of-pocket expenses that limit family access to services; (ii) inadequate public funding and heavy reli

Uncovering dual molecular diagnoses in families with complex phenotypes through structural and clinical studies of novel COL4A6 variants.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between observed clinical phenotypes and underlying genotypes is blended or skewed in multiple molecular diagnoses, complicating a comprehensive molecular genetic diagnosis. AIM: We report two families with dual diagnoses, using the deafness-associated gene, COL4A6, to exemplify its contribution to blended, complex clinical presentations. DESIGN: This is an observational study within a large, ethnically diverse rare disease cohort, focusing on families with hearing loss and suspected dual diagnoses, followed by functional and structural studies of novel variants.

"They don't care about deaf problems." Children's rights and emotional well-being.

This study uses a mixed-method sequential approach to explore the prevalence, perceptions and experiences of deaf children in relation to their emotional well-being in Northern Ireland. While there is a small body of research exploring the application of human rights treaties for deaf children, there is an absence of research that applies a rights-based framework to their emotional well-being. Drawing on findings from our study we argue that deaf children experience a lack of inclusive time and space(s) across their lives, and that they carry undue burden and responsibilities in implementing t

The evolving role of fathers of young deaf children in Turkey.

The present study aimed to explore the evolving role of fathers in the lives of young deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) children and to construct a theory that explains this role within the Turkish context. The participants were 12 Turkish fathers of young DHH children. Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, theoretical data were collected over seven months through semi-structured interviews, supported by supplementary techniques including information forms, observations, documents, an artifact, and a reflective journal. The data were analyzed using constant comparative analysis and con

Fingerspelling as a pathway to deaf children's reading: a scoping review.

The role of fingerspelling or manual alphabet for reading among deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals has been of great interest in research. What can decades of research on fingerspelling and reading among deaf individuals tell us about how fingerspelling aids deaf children's reading development? This scoping review was, therefore, undertaken to explore: (a) What is the relationship between fingerspelling and reading?, (b) In what ways do fingerspelling abilities promote reading skills?, and (c) What is known about using fingerspelling to teach reading? We identified 26 studies that were scree

Experiences of loneliness among older deaf adults who use sign language.

Loneliness is recognized worldwide as a risk to well-being and health. It emerges from the discrepancy between our expectations of social relationships and the reality. However, very little is known about the experiences of loneliness among older deaf adults. The aim of the study was to describe the experiences and expressions of loneliness among 12 older deaf adults who use sign language. We interviewed them, and the interview transcripts were analyzed inductively. Loneliness manifested itself in a variety of ways in the narratives, facial expressions, postures, movements, gestures, and the v

Reframing language decisions for d/Deaf children through family language policy.

For families of deaf children, early language planning is often shaped by high-pressure decisions and conflicting professional advice. This brief introduces Family Language Policy (FLP) as a practical, strengths-based framework for supporting communication decisions following cochlear implantation. Rather than framing oral and visual languages as competing approaches, FLP acknowledges the diverse values, beliefs, and contexts that shape each family's choices. Drawing on bilingualism research and findings from (McMenamin, 2019) this article highlights that developmental outcomes are not determi

Experiences who are d/Deaf and queer individuals: a systematic review and meta-synthesis.

The current systematic review and meta-synthesis investigated the experiences of Deaf queer people, specifically, how identities in this population shift dynamically in response to their dual marginalization. Data were extracted from 27 qualitative studies, with a sample total of 176 participants. Synthesis was influenced by the Model of Multidimensional Identities to frame resulting categories and themes. Four categories were developed from the data: (1) institutional contributors to identity salience, (2) cultural moderators of institutional neglect, (3) resistance to double exclusion throug

Why learn sign language? Medical influence on hearing parents decisions.

Early access to sign language is considered fundamental for the development of deaf children; however, around 90% of them are born in hearing families who do not know this language. As a result, early language development of deaf children can be profoundly affected by their lack of exposure to an accessible language. This study sought to examine how hearing parents of deaf children relate to sign language and the process of learning it. A descriptive, analytical, and relational study was conducted, following a qualitative approach based on Grounded Theory. Interviews to 13 parents of two schoo

Bridging gaps in deaf epistemology: exploring deaf narratives and perspectives.

Deaf epistemology, which focuses on the unique ways deaf individuals navigate and experience the auditory world, has become a critical area of study in recent years, particularly in the U.S. This literature review explores key themes in deaf U.S. epistemology, focusing on the comparison between traditional (hearing-centered) epistemology and deaf epistemology, as well as the influences of identity, culture, and sign language. Findings reveal that deaf epistemology in the U.S. is deeply shaped by identity, cultural pride, Deafhood, and the recognition of American Sign Language and situated home

Brief Communication: Severe Immuno-Induced Rhinosinusitis With Deafness After Ipilimumab and Nivolumab Combination for Melanoma, and Review of the Literature.

Immunotherapy with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) is widely used to treat cancers, and reports of rare immune-related adverse events (irAEs) are increasing. Ear, nose, and throat (ENT) irAEs are often underestimated, as patients rarely report rhinorrhea and most cases of sinusitis are asymptomatic, detected only during tumor CT assessments. We report a rare case of severe rhinosinusitis with hearing loss after ipilimumab and nivolumab combination therapy for melanoma. Due to steroid dependency, the patient was successfully treated with intravenous infliximab but was left with residual deaf

Women's way of leading-deaf led and community rooted.

Deaf women's leadership challenges dominant models of authority by centering relational trust, cultural fluency, and community care. Based on survey and interview insights, it highlights themes of trailblazing, self-authored roles, intersectional barriers, and leadership bias. Deaf women reclaim leadership through language and identity as sources of visibility and power. Their experiences reveal systemic barriers such as sexism, audism, tokenism, intra-community critique, as well as sustaining values of resilience, mentorship and collective celebration, urges for investment in Deaf-led mentors

Forecasting Spoken Language Development in Children With Cochlear Implants Using Preimplant Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

IMPORTANCE: Cochlear implants substantially improve spoken language in children with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss, yet outcomes remain more variable than in children with healthy hearing. This variability cannot be reliably predicted for individual children using age at implant or residual hearing. Development of an artificial intelligence clinical tool to predict which patients will exhibit poorer improvements in language skills may enable an individualized approach to improve language outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To compare the accuracy of traditional machine learning (ML) with dee

Approach to the Patient: Mitochondrial Diabetes: Contemporary Cases and a Precision Medicine Approach.

Maternally inherited diabetes and deafness (MIDD) syndrome is a rare form of monogenic diabetes most often caused by the pathogenic m.3243A > G mutation in the mitochondrial tRNALeu (UUR) gene, MT-TL1. Mutations causing MIDD are also associated with mitochondrial encephalomyopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes. This paper analyzes the data of 15 probands with mitochondrial diabetes enrolled in the University of Chicago Monogenic Diabetes Registry, all of whom have confirmed pathogenic variants, primarily m.3243A > G. Three of these probands (3/15) were selected for detailed case s
