Nasal Resonance Characteristics in Mandarin-Speaking Children With Cochlear Implants.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cochlear implantation (CI) and age at implantation on speech nasal resonance in a group of prelingually deaf Chinese children. METHOD: This study examined 50 prelingually deaf children with CI and 50 age-matched children with normal hearing (NH). The children with CI were divided into two groups based on age at implantation: 29 children received implants at or before 4 years of age, and 21 children received them after the age of 4 years. The participants were asked to recite two Chinese phrases and three Chinese sentences containing

The effect of an online music program on children with cochlear implants' vocabulary, and maternal stress, and the role of the acoustic environment.

OBJECTIVES: We had two sets of objectives. First, to assess the effects of an online music program on the expressive vocabulary of children with cochlear implants (CIs) and on maternal stress. Second, to explore associations between children's vocabulary, maternal stress, and the quality of children's acoustic environment, measured as daily exposure to speech in quiet. METHODS: Sixteen children with CIs (M = 17.63 months, SD = 6.39) and their mothers participated weekly in a 12-week online music program (CI-T), and 16 children with CIs (M = 18.46 months, SD = 6.02) and their mothers served as

"Doing the Best I Can": Qualitative Outcomes and Participant Feedback From a Combined Communication and Counselling Treatment for Primary Progressive Aphasia.

INTRODUCTION: There is a growing evidence base supporting the utility of restitutive speech-language treatments for individuals with primary progressive aphasia (PPA). In contrast, there is limited research investigating treatment approaches that offer counselling to this population. Given that people with PPA are susceptible to negative impacts on their psychosocial well-being, research is needed to address this underrepresented area of inquiry. This paper provides qualitative research findings from a pilot and feasibility study in which individuals with PPA completed a novel, telehealth-base

Vocabulary size and structure affect semantic competition in 18-month-olds.

Children recognize semantic relations between words early in development, yet it is unclear how this ability is affected by children's vocabulary size. We explore this question using an eye-tracking paradigm that manipulated the degree and kind of semantic overlap between labeled target objects and unnamed distractor objects to measure real-time recognition of known word meanings in 18-month-olds with varied vocabulary sizes (N = 136). Additionally, we assess how semantic network structure in children's vocabularies affects disambiguation among semantically related and unrelated words by measu

Immersion, Inclusion, Impact: Enhancing Educational Access for d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students Through Immersive Technologies-A Systematic Literature Review.

Immersive technologies are increasingly used in education, yet their role in supporting the diverse communication and learning needs of d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) learners remains underexamined. This PRISMA-guided systematic review synthesizes evidence on how augmented reality, virtual reality, mixed reality, extended reality, and metaverse-based environments are applied in d/Dhh education. Searches of five databases (Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, ACM Digital Library, and Google Scholar; 2014-2024) identified 30 studies (21 empirical, nine conceptual/design-focused). Data were s

Brain-wide mapping of neuroanatomical connections to the auditory cortex of hearing and deaf mice.

Remarkable therapeutic innovations have made it possible to establish hearing in congenitally deaf subjects. Despite these advances, a potential obstacle to restoring auditory function is that the absence of auditory experience alters the connectivity of the auditory cortex, a region that contributes to auditory perception and cognition. Here we used an intersectional genetic approach to map the brainwide inputs to the primary auditory cortex of congenitally deaf mice and their hearing littermates. We found that deaf mice displayed a significant reduction in afferents arising from the basomedi

On the effect of applied lateral tension on the deformation energetics of biological membranes and the lipid dynamics within.

A broad range of cellular functions involve transient or persistent changes in the morphology of lipid membranes, from the organellar to the molecular scale. By and large, the thermodynamics of protein-mediated remodeling, which often distort the membrane beyond its thermally accessible undulations, remain to be understood. Molecular Dynamics simulations enhanced by advanced sampling methods are uniquely suited to examine and quantitate these phenomena. Here, we leverage the Multi-Map simulation method to directly quantify how applied lateral tension impacts the energetics of both global and l

The prevalence of protein misfolding as a mechanism for hereditary deafness.

Hearing loss is the most common sensory deficit impacting ~5% of the world's population. The Deafness Variation Database (DVD) is a public resource of deafness variants, containing 381,924 missense variants across 224 genes, with 303,577 classified as a variant of uncertain significance (VUS). To address the challenge of evaluating each deafness associated VUS, we evaluate a family of probabilistic frameworks to quantify the strength of computational evidence based on ACMG/AMP recommendations. First, CADD and REVEL are compared using Bayesian models parameterized using either a ClinVar 2019 da

Spectrum of DNA Variants Underlying Deafness in an Ecuadorian Cohort.

The genetic etiology of hearing loss (HL) in Ecuador remains largely unexplored. This study investigates the spectrum of genetic variants associated with HL in a cohort of 66 Ecuadorian families using Exome or Genome sequencing (ES/GS). We identified pathogenic and likely pathogenic variants underlying HL in 27 families (41%). While variants were detected in 15 different genes, only GJB2 (in 12 families) and TMC1 (in 3 families) variants were identified in more than one family. The NM_004004.6 (GJB2):c.19 C > T (p.Gln7*) and NM_004004.6 (GJB2):c.35delG (p.Gly12Valfs*2) variants were more commo

Genetic diversity of Usher syndrome in Moroccan patients.

Usher syndrome (USH) is a rare genetic disorder accounting for almost 50% of all hereditary deaf-blindness cases. This heterogeneous, autosomal recessive condition is categorized into 3 main clinical subtypes (USH1, USH2 and USH3) and an atypical form of USH based on the severity and age of onset of the hearing loss, the absence or presence of vestibular dysfunction and the age of retinitis pigmentosa (RP) onset. This study aims to characterize the genetic spectrum of Usher syndrome in the Moroccan population. We used targeted-exome, whole exome and Sanger sequencing to identify variants in US

Nursing perceptions toward Deaf and DeafBlind individuals: a cross-sectional study.

Communication is a significant barrier for persons who are Deaf and persons who are DeafBlind when accessing healthcare services. Most healthcare professionals are unfamiliar with sign language, which complicates the provision of holistic care. This cross-sectional study aimed to assess differences between employed nursing professionals and nursing students in three areas: motivation to learn Croatian Sign Language, knowledge about persons who are Deaf and persons who are DeafBlind, and opinions toward them. In both questionnaires, the same questions were asked for direct comparison between th

Compensatory Interplay Between Clarin-1 and Clarin-2 Deafness-Associated Proteins Governs Phenotypic Variability in Hearing.

Usher syndrome type III (USH3) is a genetic disorder characterized by progressive, post-lingual hearing loss, variable vestibular dysfunction, and onset of retinitis pigmentosa. USH3 is caused by mutations in CLRN1, which encodes clarin-1, a tetraspanin-like protein. Mutations in CLRN2, which encodes the related protein clarin-2, are also implicated in progressive, non-syndromic hearing loss in both humans and mice. USH3 patients show considerable phenotypic variability, even among individuals with the same mutation. This variability may result from environmental factors or interactions with o

Comparing perspectives from experts and individuals with lived experience in the Global North versus the Global South: ICF core sets for deafblindness.

BACKGROUND: Achieving equitable global health frameworks requires the intentional integration of diverse voices-both professional and lived-from across the high-resourced Global North (GN) and low-resourced South (GS). It is, however, rare that Core Set development using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) has equal data representation from both regions. Using the data from the development of Core Sets on deafblindness, we explored a unique opportunity, given the geographic distribution of data sources. We compared ICF category frequencies from the GN a

Natural History of Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Children With STRC Mutations.

INTRODUCTION: The most common genes responsible for autosomal recessive nonsyndromic hearing loss (AR-NSHL) are GJB2 and STRC. STRC mutations are associated with mild-to-moderate sensorineural (SNHL) hearing loss and a lack of progression. However, our institutional experience suggested otherwise, prompting this review. METHODS: A 10-year retrospective chart review was performed at a tertiary children's hospital after the University of Iowa added STRC to its OtoSCOPER panel in 2013. Subjects with positive OtoSCOPER results underwent audiologic review. Hearing progression was defined based on

Generation of induced pluripotent stem cells from a patient with CHARGE syndrome with athymia, harboring a heterozygous mutation in CHD7.

CHARGE syndrome is a rare, complex congenital disorder affecting multiple organ systems, with CHD7 identified as its primary causative gene. Individuals with CHARGE syndrome can exhibit T cell immunodeficiency, which compromises adaptive immunity and increases susceptibility to infections. T cell immunodeficiency in CHARGE syndrome is largely attributed to thymic hypo/aplasia. In this study, we generated an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) line from the blood of a 21-month-old female with CHARGE syndrome and athymia who carries a de novo CHD7 pathogenic variant, c.1366C > T (p.Q456*). Biofeedback vs Respiratory Retraining for Inducible Laryngeal Obstruction: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: Inducible laryngeal obstruction (ILO) presents as episodic shortness of breath that can range in severity and may greatly impact daily life. Respiratory retraining therapy (RRT) provided by speech-language pathologists is the standard of care. Limited data exist on treatment effectiveness, with no published randomized clinical trials comparing treatments. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of video biofeedback (directly showing participants their laryngeal anatomy as they perform breathing exercises) compared with RRT in the treatment of episodic, inhalational dyspnea attrib
