Trachoma Prevalence in Al Rahad Locality, Sudan: Evaluating Chlamydia trachomatis Infection Prevalence as a Complementary Programmatic Indicator.

Trachoma remains endemic in Sudan. A 2009 baseline survey in Al Rahad locality revealed a trachomatous inflammation-follicular (TF) prevalence of 7.1%, prompting azithromycin mass drug administration (MDA). After three MDA rounds (2015-2017), a trachoma impact survey was conducted in 2017. This study's aim was to estimate the prevalence of clinical signs and ocular Chlamydia trachomatis infection identified with DNA testing. A cross-sectional, cluster-random sampling design was used, and certified graders assessed participants for clinical signs and swabbed children for C. trachomatis. The TF

Comparative transcriptomic profiling of human conjunctival epithelial cells and macrophages in response to Chlamydia trachomatis genovars A and B in early- and mid-infection cycles.

Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct), an obligate intracellular bacterium, is the primary infectious cause of blindness through trachoma. Ct undergoes a unique biphasic developmental cycle between infectious elementary bodies and replicating reticulate bodies, manipulating host cells via secreted effector proteins. Whilst previous studies have characterised host-pathogen interactions including transcriptomes of urogenital Ct genovars E and L2, limited studies exist on ocular Ct genovars. This study examined transcriptomic responses of human conjunctival epithelial (HCjE) cells and PMA-differentiated THP

Neglected tropical diseases in conflict-related humanitarian emergency settings: a systematic review of the literature.

Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) are a group of 21 conditions affecting an estimated 1 billion people worldwide, causing significant mortality and morbidity. WHO has targeted their control, elimination or eradication by 2030, while highlighting that conflict and humanitarian emergencies are risks to achieving this. A systematic review of peer-reviewed literature was undertaken, using terms related to conflict-related humanitarian emergencies (CRHE), based on the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project codebook terms for defining emergencies and terms including all WHO-defined NTDs. Post-elimination trachoma surveillance and integration into primary health systems: a scoping review protocol.

OBJECTIVES: This scoping review will map the global evidence on post-elimination trachoma surveillance, with a particular focus on integration models within primary health care, aiming to draw lessons for Nigeria. INTRODUCTION: Trachoma, the leading infectious cause of preventable blindness, has been eliminated as a public health issue in 27 countries. Maintaining these achievements requires strong post-elimination surveillance, yet evidence on incorporating trachoma monitoring into primary health care and health information systems remains scattered and incompletely synthesized. ELIGIBILITY

Community Health Workers' Multiple Understandings of Schistosomiasis Transmission Pathways: Exploring Contextual Factors in Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya and Uganda.

OBJECTIVE: Schistosomiasis remains a public health concern in sub-Saharan Africa, affecting over 250 million people. In endemic settings, schistosomiasis transmission is not always understood exclusively in biomedical terms. Community health workers (CHWs) contribute to schistosomiasis control through mass drug administration and health education, yet limited evidence exists on how they understand schistosomiasis transmission. This study explores how CHWs in Côte d'Ivoire, Kenya and Uganda explain schistosomiasis transmission and how these explanations relate to wider disease and training cont

Sub-district spatial heterogeneity in trachoma seroprevalence as populations approach elimination.

Programmatic decisions regarding surveillance and intervention for trachoma are made at the district level, reflecting an implicit assumption that transmission within districts is sufficiently homogeneous. However, as transmission declines, residual pockets of transmission may become spatially heterogeneous at sub-district scales. Using cluster-level data from 12 districts in Amhara, Ethiopia (2019-2023), we assess the spatial structure of Pgp3 antibody responses, a sensitive measure of infection transmission. Spatial clustering was evident in higher prevalence districts but diminished as popu

Use of complementary indicators in trachoma surveys in Nigeria: results of impact surveys in two local government areas.

OBJECTIVES: Trachoma elimination progress is hampered in some districts by persistent or recrudescent trachomatous inflammation-follicular (TF). In Sokoto State, Nigeria, two local government areas (LGAs) have been classified as having persistent TF. We aimed to determine whether there was ongoing, programmatically significant conjunctival Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct) community transmission in these LGAs. METHODS: In addition to examination for trachoma clinical signs, we took conjunctival swabs (for Ct nucleic acid amplification testing) from children aged 1-5 years, and dried blood spots [for

Ocular community state types reveal distinct microbial compositions among microbiomes with implications for trachoma control.

Trachoma, a chronic ocular disease caused by Chlamydia trachomatis (Ct), is the leading infectious cause of blindness worldwide. Despite WHO's SAFE (Surgery, Antibiotics, Facial cleanliness, Environmental improvement) strategy, ~100M are at risk of blindness. Using metagenomic shotgun sequencing, we characterized the ocular microbiome of 680 villagers in Amhara Ethiopia, identifying 10 Community State Types (CSTs) associated with different population characteristics. Children with the highest prevalence of inflammatory trachoma and Ct were in CST10, dominated by Haemophilus influenzae and four

Knowledge and Attitudes Toward Trachoma Among Final-Year Clinical Medicine Students in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Trachoma continues to pose a serious concern as one of the leading causes of blindness globally, particularly in areas with poor access to healthcare and hygiene services. Despite its importance, there is a conspicuous paucity of thorough data on medical students' awareness and attitudes toward trachoma. To fill this gap, a study was done to investigate the knowledge and attitudes toward trachoma among final-year clinical medicine students at Dar es Salaam Colleges, shedding light on the awareness levels and attitudes of this key group of future healthcare practitioners. METHODS:
