Immunohistochemical Characterization of the Immune Response in Chronic Endometritis Caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.

In 2020, 128.5 million new chlamydia infections were reported worldwide in adults aged 15-49 years. Notably, the prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in pregnant women varies between 2% and 35%, correlating with increased risks of low birth weight, preterm birth, and neonatal death. C. trachomatis is a leading preventable cause of miscarriage. Recurrent first-trimester pregnancy loss can be induced by asymptomatic chlamydia infection through the immune response. In this study, we performed immunohistochemical characterization of the immune response in endometrial tissue biopsies from

Implications of empirical testing and treatment for atypical bacteria in patients hospitalized with COVID, influenza, or RSV: a retrospective observational cohort study.

PURPOSE: Patients admitted with viral respiratory tract infections are at risk ofbacterial co-infections that may exacerbate disease severity. Detection of atypical bacteria requires specific laboratory diagnostic modality and specific antibiotics. METHODS: In this retrospective regionwide cohort study we included all patients admitted to a hospital in the Central Denmark Region with COVID-19, influenza A, influenza B, or Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) from February 2019 to February 2024. Firstly, we investigated the number of patients testing positive for atypical bacterial co-infection. S

National and international guidelines for preconception care and comparison with Australian guidelines: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines for preconception care are resources that are systematically arranged based on evidence and local contexts to enhance the delivery of high-quality and consistent healthcare. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners Guidelines (RACGP) for preventive activities in general practice (the Red Book) contains specific components of preconception care items, yet this guideline primarily focuses on general preventive healthcare and may not include a comprehensive list of preconception items based on more recent evidence. This review aimed to compare the recent RACGP

Identification of Chlamydia pneumoniae and NLRP3 inflammasome activation in Alzheimer's disease retina.

Chlamydia pneumoniae is an intracellular bacterium implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but its role in retinal pathology and disease progression is unclear. Here we identify Chlamydia pneumoniae inclusions in the retina, showing higher burden in AD retina and brain, increasing with APOEε4, disease stage, and cognitive deficit. Retinal and cortical proteomics reveal bacterial-infection and related NLRP3-inflammasome pathways. Retinal NLRP3 is elevated in mild cognitive impairment and activated in AD dementia, evidenced by increased caspase-1, cleaved interleukin-1β, and cleaved N-terminal g

Anti-Chlamydia trachomatis Host Defence Arsenal Within the Cervicovaginal Environment.

Chlamydia trachomatis has a significant impact on public health, especially among adolescents and young women; it primarily affects urogenital epithelial cells, leading to cervicitis and urethritis, with >90% of cases showing no symptoms. Consequently, chlamydial infections are commonly misdiagnosed, and, if untreated, they may result in severe reproductive sequelae including infertility. A better understanding of C. trachomatis cell biology and bacterial-host cell interactions may be helpful to identify strategies able to counter its transmission among the population, as well as its dissemina

Upsurge of Chlamydia pneumoniae respiratory tract infections in 2024/2025 in Southern Germany.

We report a never seen before upsurge of Chlamydia pneumoniae (Cp) respiratory tract infections in 2024/25 in southern Germany. Regarding 43,558 Cp PCR tests analyzed, the positivity rate increased from 0.3% in 2015-2020 to 2.6% in 2024, and 2.4% in 2025 until August 2025, peaking at ≥ 6.0% with > 100 monthly cases in October and November 2024. Children aged 6-14 years were predominantly affected, and co-infections with other pathogens were frequently detected. We aim at raising awareness concerning Cp infections.

Clinical characterization of Chlamydia psittaci infections detected by targeted next generation sequencing in a Chinese tertiary hospital.

BACKGROUND: Psittacosis is a zoonotic disease caused by Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci). Its clinical symptoms are nonspecific, ranging from influenza-like symptoms to severe pneumonia. Thus, it is often ignored and underreported. To date, the report of C. psittaci infections detected by targeted next generation sequencing (tNGS) is still limited. METHODS: tNGS was performed on the platform of Vision Medicals in patients with fever or respiratory infections from August 2024 to August 2025 in our hospital. The specimens included blood and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). C. psittaci infec

Associations of common infections with frailty and mortality in two UK cohort studies.

BACKGROUND: Some common infections are associated with poorer age-related health outcomes; however, findings are limited to a small number of pathogens and frequently inconclusive. This study aimed to expand the range of pathogens investigated in relation to frailty and mortality in older age. METHODS: We investigated relationships between seropositivity for 18 viruses, bacteria and protozoa with concurrent frailty and prospective mortality in middle-aged and older adults within two UK population-based cohorts: UK Biobank (N = 9427; aged 40-70 years) and Medical Research Council National Surv

Chlamydial Histones Control Developmental Fitness in the Next Infection Cycle.

The unique chlamydial developmental cycle comprises three stages: primary differentiation of infectious elementary bodies (EBs) into reticulate bodies (RBs), RB replication, and secondary differentiation into progeny EBs. Extensive chromosome remodeling during RB-to-EB differentiation is thought to be mediated by the histones HctA and HctB. Here, we used an inducible CRISPR interference system to repress hctA, hctB, or both genes during development in Chlamydia trachomatis. Surprisingly, repression of either histone gene alone or in combination caused only modest reductions in EB yield and did

Prevalence and risk factors of neglected zoonoses in Ethiopian small ruminants: a focus on Q fever, brucellosis, chlamydiosis, and toxoplasmosis.

Neglected zoonoses, including Q fever, brucellosis, chlamydiosis, and toxoplasmosis, pose significant health risks to both animals and humans, particularly in low-resource settings. This study assessed their seroprevalence and risk factors in small ruminants across five Ethiopian districts. Among the 1,402 animals tested, 16.5% were seropositive for Coxiella burnetii (Q fever), 6.8% were seropositive for Brucella spp., 8.8% were seropositive for Chlamydia abortus, and 11.4% were seropositive for Toxoplasma gondii, with 5.3% showing mixed infections. At the flock level, 76.8% harbored at least

Molecular evidence of haemosporidian infections in tawny owls (Strix aluco) from central Norway.

Haemosporidians, including Leucocytozoon spp., Plasmodium spp., and Haemoproteus spp., are vector-borne parasites that cause avian malaria and malaria-like diseases in birds. These infections can result in anaemia, reduced body condition, impaired reproductive success, and mortality, thereby acting as selective agents within host populations. Climate change is expected to influence dynamics of some haemosporidians, particularly in northern regions, by altering vector distributions and extending transmission seasons. In this study, tawny owls (Strix aluco; n = 27) from central Norway, were scre

Prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Bacterial Vaginosis and Their Association with Maternal and Neonatal Outcomes in Women Presenting with Threatened Preterm Labor, Preterm Labor, and Preterm Prelabor Rupture of Membranes.

BACKGROUND: Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) are sexually transmitted infections implicated in preterm birth and neonatal morbidity. Thailand does not routinely screen for CT and NG antenatally. Their prevalence among women with threatened preterm labor (TPL), preterm labor (PTL), and preterm prelabor rupture of membranes (PPROM) remains unclear. METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational cohort study of 330 pregnant women with TPL, PTL, or PPROM at 28 weeks 0 days to 36 weeks 6 days of gestation who delivered at Siriraj Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand, from 2023 t

Severe pneumonia caused by Chlamydia psittaci and Aspergillus terreus: a case report.

Chlamydia psittaci is a known cause of severe pneumonia and may be associated with invasive fungal co-infections; however, its complication by Aspergillus terreus is exceptionally rare. We report a case of a previously healthy 58-year-old woman with poultry exposure who presented with fever and dyspnea that rapidly progressed to respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation. After initial empirical antibiotics failed, targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS) of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid concurrently identified Chlamydia psittaci and Aspergillus terreus, guiding successful targeted

Comparative pathogenesis and management of orbital/conjunctival and gastric MALT lymphoma: Microbial drivers, molecular mechanisms, and therapeutic implications.

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma is a subtype of indolent extranodal B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Orbital and conjunctival MALT lymphomas (OAML) are the most common primary ocular adnexal lymphomas, while gastric MALT lymphoma remains a prototypical site linked to Helicobacter pylori infection. Despite the disparate anatomical locations, mounting evidence suggests a shared pathogenesis, including chronic antigenic stimulation, lymphoid accumulation, and genetic events. We explore the epidemiologic, pathophysiologic, and molecular connections between OAML and gastric MALT lymph

Influenza A Co-infection With Atypical Bacteria: A Report of Two Cases.

Influenza A virus infection is associated with a wide range of clinical manifestations, from mild upper respiratory infections that resolve on their own to severe pneumonia and sepsis. Bacterial co-infections, particularly due to atypical pathogens such as Chlamydia pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae, may alter disease severity and clinical presentation, especially in paediatric patients and adults with underlying comorbidities. We describe two cases of Influenza A virus infection complicated by atypical bacterial co-infections. The first case involved an elderly female with multiple chronic
