BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a leading cause of valvular heart disease worldwide, particularly in developing countries. The mitral and aortic valves are most often affected; however, tricuspid valve involvement has been observed in advanced cases.
CASE SUMMARY: We present a case of a patient with RHD with tricuspid valve involvement who successfully underwent transcatheter tricuspid valve replacement (TTVR).
DISCUSSION: TTVR is a promising, less-invasive alternative treatment for patients with severe symptomatic tricuspid regurgitation deemed unsuitable for surgery. Despite t

BACKGROUND: Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery is a rare congenital heart defect associated with high mortality during infancy if not surgically corrected. Its occurrence combined with hypoplastic left heart syndrome is highly uncommon, presenting considerable diagnostic and technical challenges. Identifying such an anomaly before surgery can be challenging, particularly in patients with complex cardiac anatomy. Intraoperative recognition requires immediate adjustments of the surgical approach, especially regarding myocardial protection and coronary artery r

OBJECTIVES: The literature is sparse regarding outcomes after valvular surgery in patients with severe chronic rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We aimed to evaluate mid-term outcomes in patients with severe chronic RHD who underwent open-heart surgery in Ethiopia, and evaluate the durability of the operated valves during follow-up.
METHODS: This study implemented an observational design, with 104 patients screened for cardiac surgery, of whom 52 were excluded. Outcome measures and clinical and echocardiographic data after cardiac surgery were availabl

Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Continuous electrocardiographic (ECG) monitoring is essential for prevention and treatment, but conventional approaches based on the need for some voluntary action often limit comfort and adherence in long-term use. This study investigates the feasibility of acquiring ECG signals from a toilet seat interface embedding dry electrodes in the posterior thighs. A total of 30 hospitalised patients with diverse cardiovascular conditions-including arrhythmias, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, structural abnor

For the 12th consecutive time, we systematically reviewed the cardio-surgical literature for the past year, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses approach for a results-oriented summary. In 2025, the discussion on the value of randomized and observational evidence continued, showing converging results in the treatment of coronary artery disease and further diverging results in the field of invasive aortic valve therapies. Across randomized trials, meta-analyses, and registries, coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) consistently provides superior long-ter

Atrial septal defects (ASDs) are among the most common forms of congenital heart disease diagnosed in adulthood. Ostium secundum defects represent the majority of cases and may remain clinically silent for decades. Delayed diagnosis can lead to progressive right-sided cardiac chamber dilation, pulmonary hypertension, arrhythmias, and heart failure. The choice between percutaneous and surgical closure depends on anatomical characteristics such as defect size and the adequacy of surrounding septal rims. We report the case of a 49-year-old woman with hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and hy

Arrhythmogenic mitral valve disease (AMVD) is a newly established entity that carries a high risk of developing ventricular arrhythmia ranging from premature ventricular contraction to sudden cardiac death. Therefore, there is an urgent need for risk prediction and stratification by using different imaging modalities. A 77-year-old patient presented with a syncopal episode. Physical examination was unremarkable. Resting electrocardiogram (ECG) was normal. Echocardiography showed mild systolic dysfunction and mild aortic stenosis. Seven days of Holter monitor recording demonstrated frequent epi

BACKGROUND: Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) remains a prevalent cause of valvular heart pathology worldwide, especially in younger populations of low- and middle-income countries. Tricuspid valve (TV) involvement in RHD is usually secondary to left-sided valvular lesions and is often underdiagnosed, since two-dimensional echocardiography (2DE) has limited ability to visualize the complex tricuspid anatomy. Compared with 2DE, three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) provides an en face visualization of the tricuspid valve, enabling direct planimetric measurements and detailed commissural assessme

Non-bacterial thrombotic endocarditis (NBTE) is characterized by the formation of sterile vegetations on cardiac valves, typically in the setting of malignancy or systemic inflammatory states. These vegetations can cause valvular dysfunction and have a higher tendency to embolize relative to other vegetations, which may result in life-threatening complications. Some of the highest rates of malignancy-associated NBTE have been seen in pancreatic cancer. A review of the literature on pancreatic cancer-associated NBTE was conducted to better understand patient presentation, disease course/progres

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Valvular heart diseases (VHDs) significantly contribute to global cardiovascular mortality and morbidity, with a shift in epidemiology from rheumatic heart disease (RHD) in developing nations to degenerative valvular diseases in aging populations of industrialized countries. We aim to evaluate the prevalence and pathological patterns of VHDs in individuals over 40 in Yazd, Iran, using high-quality echocardiographic evaluations to inform public health strategies and optimize resource allocation for VHD prevention and management.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved

BACKGROUND: Uncorrected supracristal ventricular septal defect (VSD) in an elderly patient is rare and is often complicated by aortic regurgitation, multivalvular disease, and arrhythmias.
CASE SUMMARY: We present an elderly female with supracristal VSD, chronic atrial fibrillation, and multivalvular disease. A transaortic approach enabled direct visualization and secure patch closure through the same aortotomy used for aortic valve replacement. Concomitant mitral valve replacement, tricuspid annuloplasty, and a Maze procedure with left atrial volume reduction were performed.

BACKGROUND: In low-gradient severe aortic stenosis (AS), reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF <50%) is practically used to define low flow and prompt dobutamine stress echocardiography to discern pseudo-severe AS. In patients with preserved LVEF, stroke volume index (SVI) <35 mL/m² is typically used. However, both are volume-based surrogates. Transaortic flow rate (TAFR), calculated as stroke volume divided by left ventricular ejection time, may better reflect true flow. Nonetheless, comparative data between TAFR and established metrics remain limited. We aimed to evaluate the prog

OBJECTIVE: The David-I procedure is the standard surgical treatment for patients with aortic root aneurysms and preserved aortic valve morphology. Its application in patients with bicuspid aortic valves presents additional challenges. This study compares long-term outcomes of the elective, isolated David-I procedure in patients with bicuspid aortic valves and tricuspid aortic valves.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all elective patients undergoing an isolated David-I procedure between 2004 and 2019. Patients with bicuspid aortic valves or tricuspid aortic valves and isolated aortic root

BACKGROUND: 4D flow MRI hemodynamic biomarkers (e.g. peak velocity and wall shear stress [WSS]) have shown promise for improved risk-stratification in patients with thoracic aortic disease (TAD). However, lengthy 4D flow scan times, complex data analysis and need for dedicated expertise limit clinical translation. In this study, we developed a fluid-physics informed deep generative adversarial neural network, CE-MRA-FLOWnet, to predict aortic hemodynamics directly from standard-of-care contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (CE-MRA) images.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified 139

BACKGROUND: Fluoroquinolones (FQs) have been associated with an increased risk of heart valve regurgitation, yet the cellular mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. Although the effects of fluoroquinolones on cardiac valvular interstitial cells have been explored in experimental models, the specific impacts and mechanisms of levofloxacin on heart valve interstitial cells remain insufficiently understood.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Aortic interstitial cells (AICs), mitral interstitial cells (MICs), and tricuspid interstitial cells (TICs) were extracted through collagenase digestion

Valvular heart disease is common in an aging population and is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Modern cardiovascular imaging is central to diagnosis, therapeutic decision-making, and longitudinal follow-up of aortic, mitral, and tricuspid valve disease throughout the entire care pathway - from initial evaluation to specialized intervention. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) remains the first-line modality for initial diagnosis and follow-up assessment. Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) provides detailed morphological evaluation of the valves and is indispensable fo
