Persistent Bartonella quintana Infection in Macaques at Primate Research Institute, Japan.

Bartonella quintana, the causative agent of trench fever, is a louseborne bacterial pathogen. During 2016-2017, we investigated B. quintana infection in macaques housed at 2 primate research institutes in Japan. We isolated B. quintana from 3 wild-caught Japanese macaques, which had been introduced into 1 institute in 2009. The macaques had received periodic ivermectin treatment every 1-2 years to control blood-feeding arthropods. Whole-genome comparisons revealed that the 3 isolates exhibit higher homology to a Japanese macaque-derived strain than to rhesus macaque-derived or human-derived st

Spotted fever group Rickettsia infection kinetics and cutaneous host response during single tick feeding events.

Rickettsia parkeri, an emerging tick-borne pathogen, is transmitted by Amblyomma maculatum. Initial bacterial inoculation occurs in the skin via infected tick bite. During blood acquisition, tick salivary factors manipulate host hemostatic and immune responses. Examination of rickettsial pathogenesis and the host response to infection in murine models primarily utilize needle inoculation. As a result, biological variables including transmission dynamics and the influence of vector saliva on the host response at the infection site are undefined. To test the hypothesis that a distinct host cutan

Seroprevalence and associated risk factors of Coxiella burnetii in small ruminants in Trás-os-Montes, Portugal.

BACKGROUND: Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, is a globally distributed zoonosis associated with small ruminants. In Mediterranean regions, where extensive farming systems prevail, understanding environmental and management drivers of infection is essential for public health. This study estimated the seroprevalence and identified multilevel factors associated with C. burnetii exposure among small ruminants in Trás-os-Montes, Portugal. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted across 105 farms (n = 1827 animals; 1596 sheep and 231 goats). Serum samples were analysed using a commercial

Serological Screening of Coxiella burnetii Phase II IgG Antibodies for the First Trimester of Ante-natal Women Using ELISA and Immunofluorescent Assay (IFA).

OBJECTIVES: Both liver fibrosis and osteoporosis share inflammatory pathways, with liver fibrosis potentially contributing to decreased bone mineral density (BMD). The rising prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and associated liver fibrosis, especially in older populations, may increase the risk of osteoporosis, but evidence remains inconclusive. This study aims to investigate the relationship between liver fibrosis and osteoporosis in individuals over 50 years old. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used data from the Bushehr Elderly Health Program (BEHP), a cohort of 2,

BACKGROUND: Q fever is a globally distributed zoonotic disease caused by Coxiella burnetii (C. burnetii). As an obligate intracellular bacterium, C. burnetii is primarily transmitted from domestic animals to humans, with ticks also serving as potential vectors. The clinical manifestations of Q fever are often nonspecific and highly variable, making its diagnosis particularly challenging. CASE PRESENTATION: Two male pneumonia patients were hospitalized in Deqing People's Hospital, one was 73 years old, and the other one was 30 years old, both of them presented with hyperpyrexia without a clear

A rare case of peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis caused by Coxiella burnetii diagnosed by mNGS.

We report a rare case of peritoneal dialysis (PD)-associated peritonitis caused by Coxiella burnetii, an intracellular pathogen typically associated with Q fever. A 28-year-old female with lupus nephritis and end-stage kidney disease on PD presented with cloudy effluent and abdominal pain after consuming undercooked lamb. Despite initial empirical broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy (cefazolin/ceftazidime protocol), clinical symptoms persisted. Conventional bacterial, fungal, and mycobacterial cultures were negative. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) of the peritoneal effluent identi

Abortive diseases in horses and donkeys in Algeria: a systematic review.

Equine abortions can result from both infectious and non-infectious causes and pose significant economic losses to the global equine industry. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study in Algeria that compiles and analyzes all published data on the etiology—bacterial, viral, parasitic, and mycotic—of abortions in horses and donkeys. The review followed the PRISMA guidelines. Data were extracted from 32 studies reported across 13 articles published between 2012 and 2020. The total sample included an average of 5928 horses and 397 donkeys. Most diagnoses were made using serological a

Genetic diversity of Coxiella burnetii in ticks from the Republic of Guinea.

Coxiella burnetii is a worldwide zoonotic pathogen responsible for Q fever. Ticks act as both potential reservoirs and vectors of C. burnetii, playing a critical role in maintaining its natural transmission cycle. Nevertheless, the vector competence of ticks in transmitting C. burnetii remains a topic of ongoing scientific debate. This study aims to investigate the genetic diversity of C. burnetii in ixodid ticks from the Republic of Guinea. Ixodid ticks were collected from cattle, goats, sheep, and dogs across eight locations of the Republic of Guinea in 2023. Ticks were identified to the spe

Q fever in the 21st century: Uncovering diagnostic, epidemiological, and one health gaps in a re-emerging zoonosis.

Q fever, caused by the gram negative obligate intracellular bacterium Coxiella burnetii, remains a globally relevant but underappreciated zoonosis in the 21st century. Despite decades of research, the disease continues to pose diagnostic, epidemiological, and clinical challenges that hinder timely recognition and effective management. This review aims to synthesize current advances in the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and diagnosis of C. burnetii, while critically examining the One Health gaps that sustain its persistence as a re-emerging zoonosis. We evaluate the strengths and limitations of ex

Molecular detection of Coxiella endosymbionts associated with ixodid ticks recovered from animals and man in Mexico: Phylogeography and haplotype diversity analysis.

For over 80 years, the genus Coxiella was considered monotypic, comprising only Coxiella burnetii, the aetiological agent of Q fever. Recent studies, however, have revealed several candidate species and genetic lineages associated with ticks, many of which act as endosymbionts that are essential for tick development. This association is particularly notable in the members of the Rhipicephalus sanguineus complex, where Candidatus Coxiella massiliensis (zoonotic) and Candidatus Coxiella mudrowiae (unknown pathogenicity) have been described. Given the close relationship between these ticks, domes

Exposure of feral swine to Coxiella burnetii overlaps with human Q fever incidence in California.

Coxiella burnetii is a zoonotic pathogen that causes Q fever in humans. There are many known reservoirs of C. burnetii, including cattle, sheep, and goats with an expanding list of potential reservoirs including birds, reptiles, ticks and additional mammalian species, such as swine. Feral swine are a highly invasive species in the United States with significant populations and a broad geographic distribution. The role of feral swine in the transmission and spread of C. burnetii is poorly understood, although a recent report identified overlap between feral swine seroprevalence and human Q feve

Serological Insights into Infectious Agents Circulating in Lithuanian Goats.

Pathogens such as Toxoplasma gondii, lentiviruses (e.g., CAE), Hypoderma spp., Neospora caninum, Mycoplasma spp., and pestiviruses are important for goat farming in Lithuania; however, data on their prevalence remain limited. To address this gap, a multi-pathogen study was conducted between 2021 and 2024 using selected ELISA kits (ID.vet, Innovative Diagnostics, France). A total of 380 blood samples were collected from 30 goat herds across different regions of Lithuania; the sample size varied depending on the pathogen. Molecular and Serological Detection of Coxiella burnetii in Small Ruminants in Northeastern Brazil.

Coxiella burnetii, the causative agent of Q fever in humans, is an important worldwide pathogen. The main reservoirs for the bacterium are ruminants, specifically sheep and goats, which act as major shedders of the bacterium in the environment. In addition, the bacterium causes significant economic losses on small ruminant farms due to abortion and other reproductive disorders, such as weak neonates or stillborn animals. Transmission between animals and humans can occur mainly through the inhalation of aerosols, direct contact with products of labour or fomites, or through the vectorial route

A human case of Q fever associated with cat in China: a neglected risk factor of Q fever.

Q fever is a globally distributed zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii, which is mainly harbored by farm ruminants. Although some studies have reported the presence of C. burnetii in cats, cat-associated Q fever is very rare. In this study, we report the case of a 30-year-old man who was diagnosed with Q fever in May 2024. The diagnosis was based on the results of next-generation sequencing and confirmed by nested PCR. Epidemiological investigations suggest that he had not come into contact with any infection sources other than two cats, one of which was a parturient cat. The blood samples of
