Coxiella burnetii is the causative agent of Q fever, a zoonotic disease of public health concern. Despite the recent expansion of the domestic goat industry in Korea, epidemiological data regarding C. burnetii exposure in Korean goat populations remain limited. This pilot study aimed to assess the serological distribution of C. burnetii exposure in the southwestern region of Jeonnam Province, the major goat-breeding region of Korea. Goat serum samples were originally collected for routine Foot-and-Mouth Disease monitoring in 2025. Using a two-stage random sampling approach, 92 samples were sel

Coxiella burnetii is an obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen that causes the zoonotic disease Q fever. Coxiella extensively subverts host vesicle traffic and replicates within lysosome-derived, spacious vacuoles by secreting a suite of effectors through the type IVB secretion system (T4BSS). This study investigates the regulation and role of a fundamental lysosomal process, exocytosis, in the prolonged maintenance of Coxiella vacuolar niche. Biochemical, microscopic, and proteomic approaches indicate that infection promotes release of extracellular vesicles (EVs). Increase in extracellula

Coxiella burnetii is a Gram-negative, ubiquitous bacterium that may infect many animal species as well as humans. In this study, transmission of C. burnetii during an outbreak of abortions in a herd of Finnish forest reindeer (Rangifer tarandus fennicus) in a Dutch zoo was investigated. Diagnostic sampling showed positive C. burnetii antigen detection with qPCR from vaginal swabs and positive C. burnetii serology (ELISA) in all cases of abortion (4/4) and in one animal after normal parturition. Placental tissue (n = 2) and fetal liver tissue (n = 1) retrieved after two abortions were positive

Bulk tank milk (BTM) provides a practical, non-invasive matrix for repeated herd-level surveillance in dairy farms. This study evaluated a four-season BTM framework for bovine brucellosis, influenza A virus, and Q fever in Korean dairy farms. In 2025, 602 BTM samples were collected from 167 farms in spring and summer and 134 farms in autumn and winter. Seasonal comparisons were interpreted cautiously because farm composition changed after summer. Bovine brucellosis was tested by milk ring test, influenza A virus by M-gene real-time RT-PCR, and Q fever antibodies by ELISA. An exploratory avian

Coxiella burnetii, the etiological agent of Q fever, is a globally distributed zoonotic pathogen and a One Health priority. Despite increasing recognition of wildlife as potential reservoirs, data on C. burnetii circulation in European wild ungulates remain scarce. This study estimated exposure to C. burnetii in free-ranging wild boar (Sus scrofa) and red deer (Cervus elaphus) from two major hunting regions in east-central and northeastern Portugal and evaluated the performance of a commercial multi-species ELISA in these hosts. Between 2011 and 2021, 279 serum samples (162 wild boar; 117 red

OBJECTIVE: Lice are obligate ectoparasites divided into two main families: Pediculidae and Phthiridae. Body lice are known vectors of bacterial pathogens like Rickettsia, which cause diseases such as epidemic typhus and trench fever. Although head lice are genetically similar to body lice, they have long been considered a nuisance rather than a medical threat. This is particularly concerning for primary school girls, a vulnerable group with high infestation rates. This study aimed to detect deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) from Coxiella, Rickettsia, and Anaplasma in head lice collected from female

The meningitis (or spotted fever) outbreaks (c.1904-1907) caused worldwide alarm but remain largely forgotten. This article uses these outbreaks as an invaluable case study for understanding early twentieth-century responses (individual and collective) to a mysterious, potentially deadly infection. More specifically, it focuses on the social production of fear until physicians and medical scientists devised new ways of making meningitis more manageable, with reference to a range of actors who shaped public responses and feelings. Ultimately, the article argues that initial attempts to warn and

BACKGROUND: Ehrlichia and Rickettsia are tickborne pathogens capable of causing severe disease. Paired serological testing, involving both acute and convalescent samples, remains the primary method of diagnostic confirmation and source of surveillance data. Yet, few patients complete recommended testing algorithms.
METHODS: We examined the demographic, clinical, and geographic factors associated with obtainment of convalescent samples for patients with suspected ehrlichiosis and spotted fever rickettsiosis using results from a large academic center in North Carolina between 2017 and 2020.

North Carolina reports high incidences of spotted fever group rickettsiosis (SFGR) and ehrlichiosis, with cases concentrated in the more urban and suburban central area of the state. To define the spatial distribution of ticks and the prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in this region, tick surveillance was conducted via (1) drag sampling and (2) passive canine surveillance. Drag sampling was conducted in 18 suburban green spaces (eg, parks, sports fields) in Chatham and Orange counties between June and August 2022. During the same timeframe, animal shelters and veterinary clinics in these coun

Ticks present a significant risk to people in the southern United States, particularly those who spend time outdoors, as ticks can transmit agents that cause various diseases. This study evaluated the risk of exposure to ticks positive for spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia species among forestry workers. From 2017 to 2021, forestry workers passively collected ticks during field surveys for the USDA Forest Service's Forest Inventory and Analysis program. We screened 1395 ticks for SFG-Rickettsia, including Amblyomma americanum (51.5% positive, N = 1,279), A. maculatum (40% positive, N = 10),

BACKGROUND: Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is a vector-borne disease with nonspecific symptoms, including fever, headache, myalgia, and exanthema, which complicates timely diagnosis and treatment. Despite its significant morbidity and mortality, epidemiological data and risk factor analyses remain scarce in Mexico.
METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted from 2018-2024 in three hospitals in northeastern Mexico. We analyzed 90 pediatric patients with confirmed rickettsiosis via polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or immunofluorescence assay (IFA). Demographic, clinical, a

BACKGROUND: Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae (SFGR) infection is one of the global public health threats. With the improvement of current hygiene conditions, the incidence of rickettsial infections has significantly decreased compared with previous years; however, in clinical practice, rickettsial infections should still be considered in the differential diagnosis of febrile cases of unknown etiology. CASE PRESENTATION: A construction worker, residing in crowded and poor sanitary conditions, presented with high fever and diffuse cutaneous rash, without reporting other associated discomfort. Emp

Tick-borne rickettsioses, caused by bacteria of the spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia, are emerging infectious diseases whose emergence and spread are often affected by climate and land-use changes. Here, we report the results of monitoring Hyalomma spp. ticks in the protected area of Pianosa island (Tuscany (Italy) and subsequently investigating their bacterial community through metabarcoding sequencing. In this study, based on analyses of 575 tick specimens distributed in 120 pools, we recorded a high prevalence of Rickettsia aeschlimannii (58% and 75% gltA- and 17 kDa-Ag protein-positive

Spotted fever is a tick-borne rickettsiosis caused by several Rickettsia species-including R. rickettsii, R. parkeri, and others-with varying degrees of pathogenicity. Its nonspecific symptoms often lead to misdiagnosis such as dengue. This study investigated anti-R. rickettsii and R. parkeri antibodies in 152 patients with acute febrile illness who tested negative for dengue. Serological analysis using immunofluorescence assay found 29 reactive samples (19%) at a 1:64 dilution. Among them, 20.6% were male and 58.6% female, with an average age of 42.6 years. The average sample collection time

Spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiosis includes a group of illnesses with similar symptoms caused by Rickettsia species bacteria. While Rickettsia rickettsii, the agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is a well-known pathogen, other SFG Rickettsia spp. can infect ticks and occasionally contribute to human disease. We conducted county-level surveillance of Dermacentor variabilis ticks in Kentucky to characterize the distribution and diversity of SFG Rickettsia. Ticks were collected from the environment from 2019 to 2024 by dragging a white cloth and through our Kentucky Tick Submission

Rickettsia conorii Indian tick typhus strain (R. conorii subsp. indica, ITTR) was detected in both a human patient and an attached Rhipicephalus turanicus tick that was removed from the patient in Yanqi County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR), China. The molecular identification of the pathogen, along with previous reports, suggests it may be distributed across the area. A 55-year-old female farmer presented with fever, headache, eschar, and a maculopapular rash following a tick bite. Laboratory findings indicated thrombocytopenia, liver enzyme elevation, and proteinuria, which, combin

The tickborne disease Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) remains life-threatening among children in northern Mexico. We retrospectively investigated 500 pediatric RMSF patients hospitalized in Sonora during 2004-2024. We analyzed clinical, laboratory, and sociodemographic data to identify predictors of fatality by using descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression. We found that the overall case-fatality rate was 19.8%, decreasing over time from 31.4% (2004-2013) to 14.5% (2014-2024). Fatal outcomes were associated with delayed doxycycline treatment (>5 days after symptom onse
