Descriptive cohort study of transient isolated tubular acidosis in early childhood: experience from a rare kidney disease expert center.

UNLABELLED: Growth faltering and/or failure to thrive in children often prompts metabolic assessment, sometimes revealing metabolic acidosis and leading to referral to pediatric nephrology. Renal tubular acidosis (RTA), causing hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis due to impaired renal acidification, includes transient isolated RTA, a relatively frequent but poorly described condition. We reviewed pediatric patients referred to the Lyon Rare Kidney Disease Center (MAREGE) between March 2023 and March 2024 for linear growth faltering and/or failure to thrive associated with isolated metabolic acid

Study protocol for exploring diabetes numeracy and health literacy across Europe (EDUCATE): A multicentre cross-sectional study.

AIMS: Effective diabetes self-management increasingly depends on the interplay between health literacy, numeracy and digital health literacy, given the growing integration of advanced digital tools into diabetes care routines. Little is known about the current state of these skills among people with insulin-treated diabetes. Therefore, this study aims to assess (digital) health literacy and numeracy in people with diabetes on intensive insulin therapy and to explore their associations with glycaemic control, health behaviours, clinical outcomes and patient-reported outcomes. METHODS: The Expl

Comparative Effectiveness of Pitavastatin Versus Atorvastatin on Lipid Profile and Blood Sugar in Patients of Diabetic Dyslipidemia: An Open-Label Comparative Study.

Introduction: Diabetes, a chronic metabolic disorder, is one of the fastest-growing health emergencies. Dyslipidemia associated with diabetes increases the risk of hypertension, kidney disease, and cardiovascular diseases. So, dyslipidemia should be treated aggressively as a part of diabetic care. This study was framed to assess the comparative effectiveness of pitavastatin versus atorvastatin on lipid profiles and glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and dyslipidemia, as well as their comparative cost-effectiveness. Methods: This prospective, parallel, open-label,

Allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells in the aging kidney: secondary results of a Parkinson's disease clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Kidney function declines with age, largely due to chronic low-grade inflammation. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have demonstrated immunomodulatory effects in certain immune-mediated kidney diseases, but their role in preserving renal function in aging individuals without chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains unclear. This study presents secondary outcome findings from a randomized clinical trial in Parkinson's disease (PD), evaluating the impact of allogeneic human bone marrow-derived MSCs (allo-hMSCs) on kidney function in an aging population with PD with preserved renal function.

Insights from single cell and bulk RNA sequencing: increased NOTCH signaling is correlated with oncogenic transformation of juxtaglomerular cells to juxtaglomerular cell tumors.

Renin-expressing juxtaglomerular cells in the kidney are the cell of origin for rare juxtaglomerular cell tumors, and affected patients often experience prolonged diagnostic odysseys as they present with relatively nonspecific symptoms related to secondary hypertension. While NOTCH1-3 gene rearrangements are the predominant molecular finding in similar (non-renin producing) "myopericytic" cell-derived glomus tumors that occur at renal and non-renal sites, such alterations have been reported in only isolated cases of juxtaglomerular cell tumors. As pathogenic mechanisms contributing to the onco

Fluid removal intensity in intermittent hemodialysis for acute kidney injury: net ultrafiltration rate characterization and outcomes.

In patients receiving continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) for acute kidney injury (AKI), excessive net ultrafiltration (NUF) rates >1.75 mL/kg/h have been associated with increased mortality, delayed AKI recovery and complications of hemodynamic instability. There is limited information on fluid removal practices and NUF rates in AKI patients treated with intermittent hemodialysis (IHD). We conducted a retrospective study of AKI patients who underwent IHD at our center between 2020 and 2023. The primary outcome was NUF rate, assessed as body weight-scaled, body surfaces area-scaled and

What's New in Membranous Nephropathy and How to Incorporate New Antigen Discoveries Into Clinical Practice: A Review.

Membranous nephropathy (MN) is one of the most common causes of nephrotic syndrome in adults and can be seen in association with other diseases, including malignancy, drugs, infections, or autoimmune diseases. Over the last decade, great progress has been made in understanding the pathogenesis of the disease, resulting from the discovery of several target antigens by use of laser microdissection/mass spectrometry methodology. This technique has proven to be the most sensitive method available and has the advantage of testing for all the target antigens at one time. The discovery of these targe

Effects of SGLT-2 inhibitors on renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system and their correlation with glucose metabolism in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with hypertension: A prospective study.

BACKGROUND: The impact of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT-2is), including dapagliflozin, on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients remains controversial, as they may either activate or inhibit RAAS, subsequently influencing glucose metabolism and the accuracy of the aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR) in diagnosing primary aldosteronism (PA). However, the effects of SGLT-2is therapy on RAAS and their correlation with glucose metabolism have not been well studied. METHODS: A cohort of 147 patients with T2DM and hypertension was
