Silent Circulation of Spotted Fever Group - Like Rickettsia Among Asymptomatic Border Personnel in the Eastern Himalaya.

Rickettsial infections are usually investigated in febrile patients, whereas molecular evidence from clinically asymptomatic populations remains limited. In this study, we screened 50 apparently healthy adult male Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel stationed in Dirang, West Kameng district, Arunachal Pradesh, during December 2025. Of the 50 individuals, 27 (54.0%) were positive by nested gltA PCR and by TaqMan real-time PCR. A subset of 15/27 (55.6%) were additionally positive for 17 kDa. None reported fever, rash, eschar, lymphadenopathy, or hospitalization around sampling and/or during fol

Spotted fever group Rickettsia infection kinetics and cutaneous host response during single tick feeding events.

Rickettsia parkeri, an emerging tick-borne pathogen, is transmitted by Amblyomma maculatum. Initial bacterial inoculation occurs in the skin via infected tick bite. During blood acquisition, tick salivary factors manipulate host hemostatic and immune responses. Examination of rickettsial pathogenesis and the host response to infection in murine models primarily utilize needle inoculation. As a result, biological variables including transmission dynamics and the influence of vector saliva on the host response at the infection site are undefined. To test the hypothesis that a distinct host cutan

Fearing Meningitis: Disease, Emotions and the Spotted Fever Epidemics of 1904-1907.

The meningitis (or spotted fever) outbreaks (c.1904-1907) caused worldwide alarm but remain largely forgotten. This article uses these outbreaks as an invaluable case study for understanding early twentieth-century responses (individual and collective) to a mysterious, potentially deadly infection. More specifically, it focuses on the social production of fear until physicians and medical scientists devised new ways of making meningitis more manageable, with reference to a range of actors who shaped public responses and feelings. Ultimately, the article argues that initial attempts to warn and

Completion of Paired Serological Testing Algorithms for Spotted Fever Rickettsiosis and Ehrlichiosis, North Carolina: 2017-2020.

BACKGROUND: Ehrlichia and Rickettsia are tickborne pathogens capable of causing severe disease. Paired serological testing, involving both acute and convalescent samples, remains the primary method of diagnostic confirmation and source of surveillance data. Yet, few patients complete recommended testing algorithms. METHODS: We examined the demographic, clinical, and geographic factors associated with obtainment of convalescent samples for patients with suspected ehrlichiosis and spotted fever rickettsiosis using results from a large academic center in North Carolina between 2017 and 2020. Tick (Acari: Ixodidae) and tick-borne pathogen prevalence in two suburban counties in Central North Carolina.

North Carolina reports high incidences of spotted fever group rickettsiosis (SFGR) and ehrlichiosis, with cases concentrated in the more urban and suburban central area of the state. To define the spatial distribution of ticks and the prevalence of tick-borne pathogens in this region, tick surveillance was conducted via (1) drag sampling and (2) passive canine surveillance. Drag sampling was conducted in 18 suburban green spaces (eg, parks, sports fields) in Chatham and Orange counties between June and August 2022. During the same timeframe, animal shelters and veterinary clinics in these coun

Beyond Rocky Mountain spotted fever: investigation of the presence and diversity of spotted fever Rickettsia species in ticks submitted from forestry workers.

Ticks present a significant risk to people in the southern United States, particularly those who spend time outdoors, as ticks can transmit agents that cause various diseases. This study evaluated the risk of exposure to ticks positive for spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia species among forestry workers. From 2017 to 2021, forestry workers passively collected ticks during field surveys for the USDA Forest Service's Forest Inventory and Analysis program. We screened 1395 ticks for SFG-Rickettsia, including Amblyomma americanum (51.5% positive, N = 1,279), A. maculatum (40% positive, N = 10),

High fever with rash: a case report of spotted fever group rickettsial infection at a construction site.

BACKGROUND: Spotted Fever Group Rickettsiae (SFGR) infection is one of the global public health threats. With the improvement of current hygiene conditions, the incidence of rickettsial infections has significantly decreased compared with previous years; however, in clinical practice, rickettsial infections should still be considered in the differential diagnosis of febrile cases of unknown etiology. CASE PRESENTATION: A construction worker, residing in crowded and poor sanitary conditions, presented with high fever and diffuse cutaneous rash, without reporting other associated discomfort. Emp

High prevalence of the Mediterranean spotted fever agent Rickettsia aeschlimannii in Hyalomma marginatum ticks from Pianosa island, Italy.

Tick-borne rickettsioses, caused by bacteria of the spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia, are emerging infectious diseases whose emergence and spread are often affected by climate and land-use changes. Here, we report the results of monitoring Hyalomma spp. ticks in the protected area of Pianosa island (Tuscany (Italy) and subsequently investigating their bacterial community through metabarcoding sequencing. In this study, based on analyses of 575 tick specimens distributed in 120 pools, we recorded a high prevalence of Rickettsia aeschlimannii (58% and 75% gltA- and 17 kDa-Ag protein-positive

Seroepidemiological survey to investigate Rickettsia rickettsii and Rickettsia parkeri in municipalities of the southeast Brazil.

Spotted fever is a tick-borne rickettsiosis caused by several Rickettsia species-including R. rickettsii, R. parkeri, and others-with varying degrees of pathogenicity. Its nonspecific symptoms often lead to misdiagnosis such as dengue. This study investigated anti-R. rickettsii and R. parkeri antibodies in 152 patients with acute febrile illness who tested negative for dengue. Serological analysis using immunofluorescence assay found 29 reactive samples (19%) at a 1:64 dilution. Among them, 20.6% were male and 58.6% female, with an average age of 42.6 years. The average sample collection time

County-level surveillance for the American dog tick (Dermacentor variabilis) and Rickettsia species in Kentucky.

Spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiosis includes a group of illnesses with similar symptoms caused by Rickettsia species bacteria. While Rickettsia rickettsii, the agent of Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF) is a well-known pathogen, other SFG Rickettsia spp. can infect ticks and occasionally contribute to human disease. We conducted county-level surveillance of Dermacentor variabilis ticks in Kentucky to characterize the distribution and diversity of SFG Rickettsia. Ticks were collected from the environment from 2019 to 2024 by dragging a white cloth and through our Kentucky Tick Submission

Identification of Rickettsia conorii Indian tick typhus strain in a Patient and an Attached Rhipicephalus turanicus Tick in Xinjiang, China.

Rickettsia conorii Indian tick typhus strain (R. conorii subsp. indica, ITTR) was detected in both a human patient and an attached Rhipicephalus turanicus tick that was removed from the patient in Yanqi County, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR), China. The molecular identification of the pathogen, along with previous reports, suggests it may be distributed across the area. A 55-year-old female farmer presented with fever, headache, eschar, and a maculopapular rash following a tick bite. Laboratory findings indicated thrombocytopenia, liver enzyme elevation, and proteinuria, which, combin

Tick-borne pathogens in ticks collected from Humans: A prospective clinical pilot study.

Tick-borne diseases (TBDs), particularly Japanese spotted fever, are an increasing public health concern in Japan. Data on pathogens carried by ticks removed directly from patients and their associated clinical outcomes remain limited. This prospective study investigated pathogen carriage in patient-derived ticks and evaluated the clinical risk of TBDs. Between April and October 2025, ticks were collected from patients presenting with tick bites at two medical institutions in Western Japan. Ticks were morphologically identified and spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) was detected by nested

Systemic lupus erythematosus mimicking Japanese spotted fever due to Rickettsia japonica detection in an eschar: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychiatric systemic lupus erythematosus (NPSLE) is a subset of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) characterized by neurological and psychiatric manifestations. NPSLE diagnosis requires exclusion of alternative etiologies, including infection. Rickettsial diseases exhibit features similar to those of SLE, including fever, rash, and cytopenia. In several reported cases, patients initially suspected of having rickettsial diseases were ultimately diagnosed with SLE. Recently, rickettsial DNA detection in eschars and/or blood using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been performe

Rickettsia parkeri genetic diversity from three different hard tick species (family: Ixodidae).

BACKGROUND: Rickettsia parkeri sensu stricto, a causative agent of spotted fever rickettsiosis, is spread via the bite of infected ticks within the Amblyomma maculatum complex group. In the United States of America (USA), Am. maculatum Koch, 1844 is the primary vector for R. parkeri; however, Amblyomma americanum (Linnaeus, 1758) and Dermacentor variabilis (Say, 1821) have demonstrated potential to transmit R. parkeri under laboratory conditions. In this study, we investigate the genetic differences between R. parkeri detected in Am. maculatum, the primary enzootic vector, and potential second
