Detection of spotted fever group rickettsiae and Coxiella burnetii in long-tailed ground squirrels (Spermophilus undulatus) and their ectoparasites.

Long-tailed ground squirrels (LTGRs, Spermophilus undulatus) are known as reservoirs of multiple arthropod-borne pathogens, such as Yersinia pestis and Bartonella rochalimae. However, data on the prevalence of spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR) and Coxiella burnetii in LTGRs and its ectoparasites are limited. In two alpine regions of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (XUAR, northwestern China), a total of 346 samples were collected from 142 LTGRs, including 142 livers and 204 pooled ectoparasites (Citellophilus tesquorum dzetysuensis: 120 pools of 484 fleas; Frontopsylla elatoides elatoides

Spotted Fever Group Rickettsioses among Hospitalized Patients and Circulation of Rickettsia in Ticks, Kazakhstan, 2019.

Testing for spotted fever group rickettsioses (SFGR) and the criteria for identifying suspected patients are not routinely used in Kazakhstan. In 2019, we performed a cross-sectional study in 6 sentinel hospitals in the Pavlodar region. We tested 105 hospitalized patients with SFGR-like symptoms by using PCR or indirect immunofluorescence antibody assay and identified 62 cases of SFGR. Most (78%) cases of disease were caused by Rickettsia sibirica and R. raoultii. Cutaneous signs (eschar or rash) were found in 87% of SFGR patients; 79% had a rash, 48% had an eschar, and 13% had neither. Testin

UNLABELLED: Implantable chemoport is a very useful device for long-term venous access for infusion of chemotherapeutic drugs and other agents. There are few studies from resource poor countries reporting complications of chemoport. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the feasibility of chemoport insertion without image guidance and by closed technique without direct visualisation of a major vein (mainly IJV) and to study the complications associated with the procedure. This was a prospective observational study which analysed 263 patients who underwent chemoport insertion. The medical

Diversity of Rickettsia species in collected ticks from Southeast Iran.

Rickettsia occurs worldwide and rickettsiosis is recognized as an emerging infection in several parts of the world. Ticks are reservoir hosts for pathogenic Rickettsia species in humans and domestic animals. Most pathogenic Rickettsia species belong to the spotted Fever Group (SFG). This study aimed to identify and diagnose tick fauna and investigate the prevalence of Rickettsia spp. in ticks collected from domestic animals and dogs in the rural regions of Kerman Province, Southeast Iran. In this study, tick species (fauna) were identified and 2100 ticks (350 pooled samples) from two genera an

Tick-Borne Rickettsioses in the Iberian Peninsula.

Tick-borne rickettsioses (TBR) are caused by obligate, intracellular bacteria of the spotted-fever group (SFG) of the genus Rickettsia (Order Rickettsiales), transmitted by hard ticks. TBR are one of the oldest known vector-borne zoonoses and pose a threat to both human and animal health, as over the years, new SFG Rickettsia spp. have been reported worldwide with the potential to be human pathogens. In Portugal and Spain, the countries that constitute the Iberian Peninsula, reported TB rickettsiae causing human disease include Rickettsia conorii conorii, Rickettsia conorii israelensis, Ricket

Cutaneous Immunoprofiles of Three Spotted Fever Group Rickettsia Cases.

Spotted fever group rickettsia (SFGR) can cause mild to fatal illness. The early interaction between the host and rickettsia in skin is largely unknown, and the pathogenesis of severe rickettsiosis remains an important topic. A surveillance of SFGR infection by PCR of blood and skin biopsy specimens followed by sequencing and immunohistochemical (IHC) detection was performed on patients with a recent tick bite between 2013 and 2016. Humoral and cutaneous immunoprofiles were evaluated in different SFGR cases by serum cytokine and chemokine detection, skin IHC staining, and transcriptome sequenc

Molecular detection of a novel Babesia sp. and pathogenic spotted fever group rickettsiae in ticks collected from hedgehogs in Turkey: Haemaphysalis erinacei, a novel candidate vector for the genus Babesia.

In this study, a total of 319 ticks were obtained from hedgehogs (Erinaceus concolor). All ticks were pooled into groups and screened by PCR for tick-borne pathogens (TBPs). PCR and sequence analyses identified the presence of a novel Babesia sp. in adult Haemaphysalis erinacei. In addition, the presence of natural transovarial transmission of this novel Babesia sp. was detected in Ha. erinacei. According to the 18S rRNA (nearly complete) and partial rRNA locus (ITS-1/5.8S/ITS-2) phylogeny, it was determined that this new species is located within the Babesia sensu stricto clade and is closely

[Possibilities of serological verification of siberian tick borne type with use of test system for identification of antibodies to Rickettsia conorii.].

The real epidemiological impact of Spotted Fever Group rickettsioses including Siberian tick-borne typhus (STT) in Russia is not sufficiently studied. One of the reasons is the actual absence of either certified domestic diagnostic kits or the evidence for using foreign test kits for laboratory verification of this group of tick-borne infections in medical practice. Objective of our study was to study the diagnostic accuracy of the ELISA test system based on Rickettsia conorii antigens for serological verification of STT. The ROC analysis was performed and operational characteristics (sensitiv
