Intracranial Hemorrhage After Reduction Malarplasty: A Narrative Review Focusing on Surgical Technique.

Reduction malarplasty (RMP) is performed frequently in East Asia. Although various complications of RMP have been reported, intracranial hemorrhage has been described only rarely. Although intracranial hemorrhage is an extremely rare complication, it is a catastrophic event that should not occur in esthetic plastic surgery. In this review, I describe the occurrence and prevention of this serious complication through a detailed analysis of intracranial hemorrhage following RMP. Evaluation of RMP surgical techniques was performed. A search of PubMed and Google Scholar was conducted to identify s

Sex-dependent investigations of the temporal development of infarct size and blood-brain barrier permeability after photothrombotic stroke in mice - a pilot study.

Stroke is the second leading cause of death worldwide covering two major types: Hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke, with the latter being the most prevalent. The pathogenesis of ischemic stroke is complex including e.g. disruption of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) function of the brain capillaries. Moreover, women are disproportionately more affected by ischemic stroke in terms of mortality rates and disease burden. However, potential sex-dependent differences in the disease pathogenesis remains to be investigated. With this study, we aimed to investigate potential sex differences in infarct size

Prognostic value of the Island sign for hematoma expansion and functional outcome after intracerebral hemorrhage: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: The Island Sign (IS) is a radiological finding observed in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). This meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the association between IS and both hematoma expansion (HE) and functional outcomes by comparing ICH patients with and without IS. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library for studies of intracerebral hemorrhage reporting the IS. The primary outcomes were functional status and hematoma expansion, secondary outcome was mortality. Statistical analysis was performed using RStudio, effect sizes were calculated as odds ratios (ORs) w

Anhidrosis: An underappreciated factor in dermatologic diseases.

Dissipation of body heat, essential to human life, is largely achieved through sweating. If sweating does not occur normally-as in patients with hypohidrosis (reduced sweating) or anhidrosis (lack of sweating)-the ability to dissipate heat via evaporative mechanisms is overwhelmed. Body temperature may rise, leading to heat-related illness, including heat intolerance, hyperthermia, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and even death. In patients seen by a dermatologist, anhidrosis may underly and contribute to their symptoms and signs but may be difficult to detect given a limited availability of too

The frequency and predictors of hematoma expansion in wake-up intracerebral hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Hematoma expansion (HE) is a key determinant of poor outcomes in intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), but its frequency and predictors in wake-up ICH remain insufficiently characterized. This study aimed to compare HE between wake-up and clear-onset ICH and to identify predictors of HE in wake-up ICH. METHODS: We analyzed patients with spontaneous ICH from a prospective cohort between August 2022 and September 2025. The primary outcome was HE defined as an absolute increase in volume > 6 mL or > 33% from baseline on follow-up computed tomography (CT). Poor outcome was defined as a modi

MRI markers of brain fluid dynamics link reduced blood-brain barrier water exchange rate to disease severity in CADASIL.

BACKGROUND: Reduced water exchange rate (kw) across the blood-brain barrier has been linked to disease severity in cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL), but the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. We investigated whether kw is associated with indirect MRI-based markers of brain fluid dynamics and whether these markers statistically explain the relationship between kw and disease severity. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seventy genetically confirmed CADASIL patients underwent clinical, cognitive and multimodal MRI assess

Recombinant factor VIIa for spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage: a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Early haematoma expansion is a key determinant of outcome in spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhage (sICH) and a biologically plausible therapeutic target. Recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa) has demonstrated haemostatic effects in randomised controlled trials (RCTs) but its impact on functional outcome remains uncertain. METHODS: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of RCTs evaluating rFVIIa in adults with sICH. MEDLINE, Embase and CENTRAL were searched from inception to March 2026. Random effects models pooled radiographic, clinical and safety outcomes. Primar

First multicenter experience with the SOFIA 88 super-large-bore aspiration catheter in mechanical thrombectomy.

BACKGROUND: Super-large-bore aspiration catheters are designed to improve clot engagement and aspiration efficiency during mechanical thrombectomy. However, multiple 0.088-inch platforms are now available, and device-specific clinical performance cannot be inferred from catheter size alone. We report the first multicenter real-world experience with SOFIA 88. METHODS: This retrospective multicenter European registry included consecutive patients treated with SOFIA 88 for anterior circulation large vessel occlusion involving the internal carotid artery or M1. The primary outcome was successful

Case Report: Navigating the bleeding-thrombosis paradox: regional nafamostat anticoagulation in a post-intracerebral hemorrhage patient on VV-ECMO.

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in patients following intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) poses a critical dilemma between circuit thrombosis and catastrophic rebleeding. While nafamostat mesylate (NM) has been increasingly explored for ECMO anticoagulation in patients with ICH, it is conventionally administered as a systemic anticoagulant with high activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) targets, which still carries significant bleeding risks. Moreover, whether NM can achieve effective regional anticoagulation in venovenous (VV) ECMO remains highly controversial. Here, we present a

GLP-1 Receptor Agonists in Heart Failure: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis with Phenotype-Specific Effects and Dual Analytical Frameworks.

BACKGROUND: Although glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) reduce cardiovascular risk in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), evidence in heart failure (HF) has expanded across diverse trial populations and HF phenotypes but remains fragmented. We therefore performed an integrated systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of GLP-1 RAs across the spectrum of HF using complementary trial-level and phenotype-based analyses. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science were systematically searched for studies published from inception to August 10, 2025. T

Development and Validation of an Interpretable Machine Learning-Based Clinical Prediction Model for Short-Term Mortality in Intracerebral Hemorrhage With Thrombocytopenia: A Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) with thrombocytopenia is associated with poor outcomes, but early risk prediction tools for this subgroup are limited. We aimed to develop and externally validate an interpretable machine learning model for predicting 28-day all-cause mortality after ICU admission. METHODS: Internal data were derived from MIMIC-III/IV, eICU, and NWICU, and external validation data from a single tertiary academic teaching hospital in China. The internal cohort was randomly split 7:3 into internal training set and internal test set. Feature selection, hyperparameter op

Endocrinologically Silent Crooke Cell Adenoma With Apoplexy Causing Oculomotor Palsy: An Uncommon and Underrecognised Entity.

Crooke cell adenomas (CCAs) are among the most aggressive pituitary neuroendocrine tumours (PitNET). The convergence with pituitary apoplexy and endocrinological silence is very rare, as these factors add to the diagnostic complexity and delayed recognition of this entity. A 41-year-old male patient with a known untreated non-functional pituitary macroadenoma, presented with acute right oculomotor palsy and headache. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated haemorrhagic infarction with bilateral internal carotid artery (ICA) encasement and cavernous sinus extension. He underwent urgent en

Cancer and intracerebral hemorrhage-related mortality in the United States: A nationwide retrospective study (1999-2023).

BACKGROUND: Cancer patients with improved survival rates have been paradoxically linked with increased age-associated comorbidities, including Intracerebral Hemorrhage (ICH). Although ICH mortality remains high in cancer patients due to coagulopathy and systemic inflammation, nationwide long-term mortality trends remain understudied. We aim to analyze co-occurring ICH and cancer-associated mortality trends and disparities in the United States. METHODS: Death certificate information was analyzed using the CDC WONDER database (1999-2023), considering adults (aged ≥35 years) listing cancer and I

TRPM8 activation by sustained-release menthol mitigates exertional heatstroke-induced testicular injury and sperm ultrastructural damage in rats.

AIMS: Exertional heatstroke (EHS) can induce marked scrotal hyperthermia and impair male reproductive integrity. This study tested whether sustained-release menthol protects against EHS-induced testicular and genitourinary injury via transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) activation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adult male Wistar rats received sustained-release menthol gel (30 mg·kg-1, subcutaneously) or vehicle for 2 weeks before EHS induction (36 °C, 50% relative humidity; approximately 52 min of treadmill running). Some rats received AMTB, a selective TRPM8 antagonist. Scrotal tempera

Sphenoidal diploic arteriovenous fistula with cortical venous reflux: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Sphenoidal diploic arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) are exceptionally rare. When accompanied by cortical venous reflux (CVR), they are considered high-risk lesions with a potential for intracranial hemorrhage, warranting prompt treatment. Endovascular management is challenging in the sphenoidal region because arterial feeders often harbor extracranial-intracranial anastomoses. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 67-year-old woman presented with chronic left temporal headache and tinnitus. Cerebral angiography revealed a sphenoidal diploic AVF with CVR. The shunt was located in the lateral sphenoid d
