Two mRNA Platforms for Canine Rabies Vaccines: Advances, Limitations, and Field Application Prospects.

Canine rabies control in rural China faces logistical barriers such as multi-dose schedules, cold-chain requirements, and the recapture of free-roaming dogs, which impede progress toward 70% vaccination coverage. Although inactivated vaccines remain the cornerstone of rabies control, mRNA platforms offer both manufacturing and immunological advantages. This review compares non-replicating mRNA (nr-mRNA) and self-amplifying mRNA (saRNA) platforms. It also examines oral and vectored vaccines as comparators for free-roaming dogs beyond the reach of injectable products. LVRNA001 and ABO1005 are nr

SIRT5 Attenuates Traumatic Brain Injury by Preserving OPA1-Mediated Mitochondrial Fusion and Limiting Oxidative Stress.

AIMS: Mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress are central pathological drivers of disease progression following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Sirtuin 5 (SIRT5), a predominantly mitochondrial NAD+-dependent deacylase, plays critical roles in mitochondrial quality control, redox homeostasis, and metabolic regulation. This study aims to define the upstream regulatory machinery controlling SIRT5 stability and to identify the downstream pathway linking SIRT5 to mitochondrial remodeling after TBI. RESULTS: In this study, we demonstrated that TBI promotes neuronal SIRT5 protein degradation vi

[Bucket-list destinations from an infectious disease perspective].

Tropical countries are among the most popular destinations for Swiss travelers and pose a health challenge in terms of infectious disease risk. Arboviral diseases are one of the major infectious risks, along with rabies, hepatitis A, and malaria. Several resurgences of vaccine-preventable diseases, such as polio and yellow fever, have also been identified. In light of these data, it would appear that the safest travel destinations from an infectious disease perspective are Cuba in Latin America, Hong Kong in Asia, and the Seychelles in Africa. However, these data are subject to change and may

[Nightmare or wonder : a bat on the ceiling].

Rabies is an invariably fatal zoonosis in humans caused by a neurotropic virus of Lyssavirus genus. Three genotypes are endemic in Europe. Genotype 1 or RABV (Rabies lyssavirus) is the agent of classical rabies, for which dogs and certain wild carnivores serve as reservoirs; genotypes 5 and 6, respectively EBLV-1 and EBLV-2 (European bat lyssavirus type 1 and 2), have bats as reservoirs. In Switzerland, classical rabies (RABV) has been eradicated since 1999, a status shared by the majority of European Union countries. Cases of human rabies encephalitis transmitted by bats in Europe are associa

Daniel Sennert on Disease and the Ontological Inversion of Generation.

This article examines how Daniel Sennert (1572-1637) reconciles Aristotelian hylomorphism with iatrochemical insights through the ontological relation between generation and disease. It focuses on the diseases Sennert models on generation, those carried by semina morborum, rather than the ordinary disorders of humoral intemperance. First, it identifies the ontological architecture grounding the inversion between generation and pathology: Sennert's rejection of the eduction of forms, his plurality of substantial forms organised through the essential/accidental distinction, and his corpuscular f

The Epidemiological Characteristics of 55 Multiple-Victim Incidents Involving Bites from a Single Dog - Shandong Province, China, 2025.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Rabies is a zoonotic infectious disease caused by rabies virus infection and was classified as a Class B notifiable infectious disease in China. Events involving multiple victims bitten by a single dog represent a distinct category in rabies epidemiological surveillance and risk assessment. These incidents indicate high-probability point-source exposure to potentially rabid animals and thus pose urgent public health threats. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: This study analyzed the epidemiological characteristics of events involving multiple victims bitte

Epidemiological Characteristics and Spatial Clustering of Single-Dog-Induced Multiple Human Exposure Events - Chongqing, China, 2016-2025.

INTRODUCTION: Single-dog-induced multiple human exposure events can result in multiple potential rabies exposures within a short period, with substantial public health and economic costs. In China, these events are managed under nationally standardized procedures and require a coordinated public health and animal health response. This study analyzed the epidemiological characteristics, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and response gaps associated with these events in Chongqing from 2016 to 2025. METHODS: Data on events, offending dogs, and exposed persons were collected from investigation rep

Investigation and Response to a Single Cat Injuring Multiple People - Shandong Province, China, 2026.

WHAT IS ALREADY KNOWN ABOUT THIS TOPIC?: Rabies is an almost universally fatal zoonosis; dogs remain China's main human exposure source. Cats are generally not persistent rabies reservoirs; most feline infections result from spillover from rabid dogs or wildlife. However, feline rabies has been documented worldwide. WHAT IS ADDED BY THIS REPORT?: This report describes a laboratory-confirmed incident in which one stray cat successively attacked two people in Shandong Province, China, in 2026. Rabies virus nucleic acid was detected in cat brain and saliva specimens; whole-genome sequencing show

Wild Boar-Related Injuries in Wilderness Environments: Field-Oriented Management Principles and Evidence-Informed Clinical Recommendations.

Wild boar-related trauma is uncommon but may result in severe injuries that pose diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, particularly in wilderness or resource-limited environments. Most scientific literature consists of isolated case reports, regional series, and forensic descriptions; clinical guidance is therefore fragmented. This study synthesizes two complementary evidence sources: a structured observational cohort documenting 101 injuries sustained by boar hunters during organized hunts in Germany, and a comprehensive systematic review of all globally published wild boar- and feral pig-re

Responsible Ownership and Welfare Indicators for Dogs and Cats in Rural Lithuania: Self-Reported Practices and In-Person Assessment.

Dogs and cats are increasingly regarded as companion animals and family members, but companionship requires more than affection: it also entails responsibility for their health, reproduction, housing and behavioural needs. Responsible ownership and welfare in rural Baltic and Eastern European settings remain poorly studied. The study included 383 Lithuanian owners (338 rural, 45 urban) and welfare assessments of 85 animals from 53 rural households using an adapted Animal Welfare Assessment Grid. Animal numbers per household differed significantly by residence (p = 0.0008), with 73.1% of rural

Owned dog population profile, dog ownership and bite risk determinants: Key steps to rabies control in Antananarivo, Madagascar.

Rabies remains a significant public health threat in Madagascar, with dog-mediated transmission causing approximately 1,000 human deaths annually. In Antananarivo, the capital city, control efforts are hindered by limited up to date knowledge on the dog population. This study aims to provide updated estimates of the owned dog population characteristics, identify determinants of ownership, and assess dog bite incidence and risk factors to guide effective vaccination and prevention strategies. Between 2023 and 2025, a longitudinal door‑to‑door household survey was conducted across 21 fokontany (

Rabies and rabies prophylaxis in Egypt: a nationwide cross-sectional study that calls for action.

BACKGROUND: Rabies is a fatal but preventable viral disease that poses a global health threat, especially in developing countries. Despite the high incidence of animal bites reported annually in Egypt, limited data exist regarding the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of the general population toward rabies and rabies prophylaxis. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional study using a structured interview-based survey targeting individuals aged 18 years or older who attended outpatient clinics at nine university hospitals across Egypt. The survey assessed participants' KAP t

A mixed-methods study of community dog management and rabies awareness in Thailand.

Rabies elimination requires coordinated interventions across the human-animal-environment interface, yet sustained progress is often hindered by systemic gaps between dog population management, community engagement, and governance. This study investigated community perceptions and challenges related to rabies prevention and control across high-endemic areas in Thailand. Using a mixed-methods design, secondary provincial quantitative data were integrated with qualitative thematic analysis from 57 stakeholders in high endemic areas, including public health officials, policymakers, NGOs, animal-w

Pasture area increases livestock rabies risk in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: a geospatial analysis of neurological syndrome cases (2020-2024).

Animal rabies poses a risk to livestock in Brazil due to transmission by hematophagous bats. The Brazilian sanitary surveillance system mandates rabies testing for any livestock exhibiting signs of neurological syndrome. This geospatial, retrospective, longitudinal, observational study analyzed rabies test results for 204 cattle and 56 horses presenting with neurological syndrome in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, from 2020 to 2024. We calculated correlations and linear models between rabies results and municipal land-use types, as well the population of herbivores. Most neurological syndrome ca

Bat-borne zoonoses: transmission, impact, prevention, and management.

Climate change and biodiversity loss are global environmental crises driving emerging infectious diseases, including bat-borne pathogens of public health significance: Ebola, Marburg, Nipah, Hendra, classic rabies virus, and Australian bat lyssavirus, as well as the fungus Histoplasma This review presents the evidence on the mechanisms of transmission, impact, and prevention and management strategies relevant to each of these pathogens. Transmission pathways vary between pathogens but often involve exposure to body fluids or excreta of a bat or other infected animal or human. The diseases asso

Presence of red foxes and contamination with Echinococcus multilocularis on soft fruit farms in Limburg, the Netherlands.

Echinococcus multilocularis (fox tapeworm), with the red fox as the main definitive host, is a major foodborne parasite in Europe and is emerging in the Netherlands. While wild berry consumption is often communicated as a risk factor for foodborne E. multilocularis infection, contamination of commercially grown soft fruits remains poorly studied. This study assessed fox presence and E. multilocularis contamination on commercial soft fruit farms in Limburg, an endemic area in the Netherlands. During the 2024 harvest season (June-August), 220 soft fruit and 220 soil samples were collected on 22

Delay in initiation of rabies post-exposure vaccination and influencing factors in Gondar zones of Ethiopia.

Rabies is a viral zoonotic disease of warm-blooded animals, which is preventable through proper administration of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). In controlling rabies, delays in initiating post exposure vaccination (PEV) are a challenge in endemic regions. A study was conducted to assess the delay in initiation of PEV and identify associated factors in Ethiopia. Data was collected by face-to-face interviews from 260 dog bite victims or their guardians between January and June, 2025 using a questionnaire. Post exposure vaccination was considered delayed if it was initiated after 48 hours of t
