Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia is the second most common heritable bleeding disorder worldwide, with a prevalence more than twice that of haemophilia, and is the most morbid inherited bleeding disorder of women. As an autosomal dominant vasculopathy due to dysregulated angiogenic signalling, patients with hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia develop telangiectasias and arteriovenous malformations which cause numerous complications. These complications include moderate-to-severe chronic epistaxis, gastrointestinal bleeding, iron deficiency anemia, and requirement for intravenous iron

PURPOSE: Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is an autosomal dominant vascular disorder characterised by telangiectasias and multi-organ arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is rare in children with HHT, and intracranial aneurysms are scarcely reported. We describe the case of a 12-year-old boy with confirmed HHT who presented with a generalised tonic-clonic seizure, followed by headache and neck pain.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A narrative literature review was conducted to identify reported paediatric cases of SAH in patients with HHT. MEDLINE, Embase, the

Understanding neural mechanisms of opponency is the next frontier of comparative color vision research. Opponent cell properties can be investigated from different perspectives: the type of cone inputs to a cell (cone opponency), and the wavelengths of light to which the cell responds (spectral opponency). Based on a recent database (DOI 10.1016/j.dib.2024.111166) on cone and spectral opponency across non-primate vertebrates, we identified major taxonomic trends in the distribution of opponent cells through image-forming brain regions, analyzed sampling metrics and experimental variables influ

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are prone to reduced bone mineral density and elevated overall fracture risk. Osteopenia affects up to 40% of patients with IBD (high regional variability). Besides disease activity, IBD specialists must consider possible side effects of medication and the presence of associated diseases and extraintestinal manifestations. Osteopenia and osteoporosis remain frequent problems in patients with IBD and are often underestimated because of widely differing screening and treatment practices. Malnutrition, chronic intestinal inflammation and corticostero

Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare genetic disease characterised by mucocutaneous telangiectasias and arteriovenous malformations that can affect multiple organs. Although rare, ischaemic cholangiopathy can occur, a serious complication that can even lead to death. We present the case of a patient with HHT disease with previous mucocutaneous and gastrointestinal manifestations in whom 8 weeks after cholecystectomy a saccular dilatation of the intrahepatic bile duct was observed.

Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is an autosomal dominant disorder with an estimated prevalence of one in 5000 to one in 7000. Pathogenic variants in three genes, endoglin (ENG), activin receptor-like kinase 1 (ACVRL1) and mothers against decapentaplegic homolog 4 (SMAD4), all part of the transforming growth factor-β signalling pathway, account for over 90% of HHT cases. Clinically, HHT is characterised by recurrent epistaxis, gastrointestinal bleeding from mucocutaneous telangiectasias, and visceral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), most commonly affecting the lungs, liver and b

A pregnant woman with hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia was referred to the obstetric anaesthetic team to determine the safety of neuraxial labour analgesia. International guidelines state that the risk of complications from spinal vascular malformations during neuraxial procedures is theoretical and recommend against routine imaging of the epidural space in asymptomatic patients. Despite this, magnetic resonance imaging was obtained to provide patient reassurance. Supine imaging was interpreted as showing an epidural arteriovenous malformation. A repeat scan in the lateral position demon

BACKGROUND: Recent diagnostic methods have enabled the detection of often culture-negative pathogens, including anaerobic bacteria from the oral cavity. Characterising the microbial diversity and co-occurrence of bacteria in such infections is important for understanding the molecular pathophysiology in odontogenic brain abscesses.
CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a case of polymicrobial odontogenic brain abscess in a 59-year-old man of Vietnamese ethnicity with a documented increased risk of brain abscess due to Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT). The microbiological diagnostic work-

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder, frequently associated with hepatic vascular malformations (HVMs). Up to 78% of patients develop HVMs, which may lead to haemodynamic alterations, increased cardiac preload, and progression to high-output heart failure (HOHF). The aim was to determine the prevalence of HOHF and assess the relationship between HVM severity, stroke volume, and cardiac index in patients with HHT. A secondary aim was to explore the haemodynamic mechanisms underlying HOHF and evaluate the usefulness of transthoraci

Rare disease studies often rely on small, selected cohorts, are resource-intensive and difficult to scale. UK primary care electronic health record (EHR) databases provide population-based, longitudinal data, but their use for rare genetic disease research has not been systematically examined. Through systematic mapping of publications from five UK primary care EHR databases (CPRD, OPCRD, QResearch, SAIL Databank and THIN), we found that only 0.82% (47 of 5754) of studies reported on rare genetic diseases. Of these, 77% (36 of 47) linked to external datasets. Study designs included case-contro

Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is an uncommon autosomal dominant vascular disorder, most frequently associated with pathogenic variants in ENG or ACVRL1, resulting in multisystem arteriovenous malformations (AVMs). We report a middle-aged woman with primary antiphospholipid syndrome on chronic enoxaparin therapy who presented with exertional dyspnoea. CT demonstrated bilateral pulmonary AVMs (PAVMs), and clinical evaluation revealed mucocutaneous telangiectasias. Genetic testing identified an ENG mutation, confirming HHT type 1 according to the three Curaçao criteria. Selective m

BACKGROUND: Hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is an autosomal dominant vascular disorder most commonly caused by pathogenic variants in ACVRL1 or ENG. Most pathogenic variants are coding missense, nonsense, splice-site variants, or small insertions/deletions, as well as exon-level deletions or duplications, and are typically detectable by next-generation sequencing (NGS). However, balanced structural rearrangements and deep intronic variants are not reliably detected by standard exome-based approaches and may contribute to genetically unresolved cases.
METHODS: We investigated four

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the quality of life in patients with Hereditary Haemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT) and to validate the Danish version of the Epistaxis Severity Score (ESS).
METHODS: The Danish version of the ESS was created through forward backward translation. The study was conducted through The Danish HHT Database, which includes patients from the national HHT center. Participants completed the Danish ESS, Short Form 36 (SF-36), and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) questionnaires, and filled out a two-week nosebleed diary documenting bleeding time. BACKGROUND: Osler's disease (hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia, HHT) is associated with telangiectasia and arteriovenous malformations, but reports of myocardial involvement are rare.
CASE SUMMARY: A 37-year-old woman with a history of pulmonary arteriovenous fistula and paradoxical embolism due to Osler's disease with endoglin mutation (HHT1) became pregnant despite high-risk considerations and delivered by cesarean section. On postpartum day 23, she developed dyspnoea and was diagnosed with acute heart failure. Echocardiography showed decreased cardiac output and circumferential left v

Background and aims Gastrointestinal telangiectasias are a recognised manifestation of hereditary haemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), but data on their nature and distribution throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract are limited. We aimed to evaluate gastrointestinal disease manifestations using pan-enteric video capsule endoscopy (VCE) and to assess its applicability in a non-selected group of patients with HHT. Methods In this cross-sectional study, patients aged ≥50 years with confirmed HHT residing in the Region of Southern Denmark were invited to undergo pan-enteric VCE. Telangiectatic
