Superficial Vein Thrombosis.

Superficial venous thrombosis (SVT) or superficial thrombophlebitis are interchangeable terms that describe a common clinical entity, characterized by inflammation and thrombosis of the superficial veins. The majority of cases involve the lower extremity, specifically the great saphenous vein (60%-80%) with or without the involvement of its associated tributaries. About 5% of cases present with bilateral SVT. The diagnosis of SVT confers a 5-year risk of developing a DVT or PE 5-fold higher than the general population, with the highest risk within the first 3 months of diagnosis.

A Report of Penile Mondor's Disease After Mechanochemical Ablation and Adjunct Foam Sclerotherapy of Bilateral Lower Extremity Truncal Incompetence.

INTRODUCTION: Mondor's disease of the penis, or superficial thrombophlebitis affecting penile veins, is a rare condition. Common causes include prothombotic states, venous stasis or excessive manipulation. The literature includes one case report of Mondor's Disease after endovenous laser ablation and foam sclerotherapy and a case series after open saphenofemoral junction ligation. However, there have been no noted cases of this rare complication after mechanochemical ablation of the GSV. CASE DETAILS: A 50-year-old man with bilateral great saphenous venous incompetence had truncal mechanochem

The effectiveness of adalimumab as an add-on therapy in two cases with leg ulcers in Behçet's disease resistant to conventional immunosuppressive therapy alone and a review of the literature.

The current report presents two cases with leg ulcers related to Behçet's disease (BD) resistant to conventional immunosuppressive therapy (CIST) but successfully treated with adalimumab (ADA). BD, which can affect vessels of any size and type, is a systemic vasculitis. In the vascular system, veins are the most predominantly affected blood vessels, with deep vein thrombosis and recurrent superficial vein thrombophlebitis being the most common vascular signs of the disease in the lower extremities. Leg ulcers, commonly associated with vasculitis or deep vein thrombosis, are rare in patients wi

[Treatment of a woman with phlegmasia cerulea dolens complicated by massive pulmonary thromboembolism and intestinal haemorrhage].

Acute thrombosis of the lower limb deep veins remains one of the most common vascular diseases. It is characterised by formation of thrombotic masses in the system of the deep veins of the lower extremities. A serious complication associated with deep vein thrombosis is pulmonary embolism. In rare cases, under certain conditions a massive and disseminated blockade of the venous outflow with thrombotic masses may lead to ischaemia of the extremity with the formation of superficial and deep necroses and later on to gangrene. One of the main components of management is long-term administration of

[Surgical treatment tactics for acute varicothrombophlebitis atypical forms].

Changes of phlebohemodynamics under control of ultrasonographic investigation were registered in 237 patients, suffering an acute varicothrombophlebitis (AVTH) of superficial veins of lower extremities (LE). In 21 patients atypical forms of AVTH were revealed, including reflux toward a big subcutaneous vein (BSV) of the leg and/or small subcutaneous vein (SSV); reflux toward insufficient indirect veins on hip and shin; reflux toward insufficient direct perforant veins. For atypical forms of AVTH the urgent operations on hip and shin were performed: crossectomy, short or long stripping, phlebec

Morphological features of vasa vasorum in pathologically changed human great saphenous vein and its tributaries.

BACKGROUND: The question whether the primary increase of vasa vasorum (VV) of venous wall (i) plays an initial role in varicogenesis or (ii) is an expression of impairment of the nutritional conditions in superficial veins of lower extremities is not unambiguously solved yet. The aim of the study was to describe the arrangement of the VV within the wall of the human great saphenous vein (GSV) qualitatively, and of its tributaries at different stages of varicosis and in other pathological states like thrombophlebitis or phlebosclerosis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 22 patients deserving an aorto-coro

Superficial thrombophlebitis of the venous dorsal arch of the foot and deep venous thrombosis after foam sclerotherapy.

Four days after foamsclerotherapy of an incompetent great saphenous vein of the left lower leg a 49-year-old woman developed a superficial thrombophlebitis of the venous dorsal arch. In the course of follow-up repeated color duplex sonography initially did not show involvement of the deep venous system and, hence, she was treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and compression hosiery. However, six weeks after foam treatment we diagnosed a deep venous thrombosis (DVT) of the popliteal vein and started an oral anticoagulant therapy. Although rarely observed, DVT is among the most ser

Thrombophlebitis of the great saphenous vein--recommendations for treatment.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the incidence of great saphenous vein (GSV) thrombosis in symptomatic patients and its possible relationship to complications usually attributed to deep venous thrombosis (DVT). METHODS: To quantitate the frequency of GSV thrombosis and evaluate its possible morbidity, we reviewed all the venous studies, both inpatient and outpatient, at a Level I Trauma Center over one year. The charts of all patients who had a thrombus in the GSV, either alone or in combination with a DVT, were examined. RESULTS: A total of 2646 lower extremity venous s

[Real embologenicity of thromboses of lower extremity veins].

The aim of the present work was to study real embologenicity of thromboses of lower extremity veins. We carried out a comparative evaluation of the embologenic risk of different thromboses of the superficial and deep veins associated with hospital treatment. The study performed allows the following conclusions to be drawn: venous thromboses in the system of the inferior vena cava are marked by an unpredictable course and require the follow up of the thrombotic process and active conservative treatment within the period not less than 7 days from the time of the first manifestations of thrombosi

High versus low doses of unfractionated heparin for the treatment of superficial thrombophlebitis of the leg. A prospective, controlled, randomized study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The optimal treatment of superficial thrombophlebitis of the leg is undefined. The main study objective was to assess the efficacy and safety of unmonitored high doses as compared to low doses of unfractionated heparin (UFH) for prevention of venous thromboembolic complications in patients with superficial thrombophlebitis of the thigh. DESIGN AND METHODS: Sixty consecutive patients with acute thrombophlebitis of the great saphenous vein, as assessed by ultrasonography, were randomized to subcutaneous injection twice daily of UFH in high unmonitored doses (12,500 IU

Superficial thrombophlebitis of the legs: a randomized, controlled, follow-up study.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of different treatment plans (compression only, early surgery, low-dose subcutaneous heparin [LDSH], low-molecular-weight heparin [LMWH], and oral anticoagulant [OC] treatment) in the management of superficial thrombophlebitis (STP), by considering efficacy and costs in a 6-month, randomized, follow-up trial. Patients with STP, with large varicose veins without any suspected/documented systemic disorder, were included. Criteria for inclusion were as follows: presence of varicose veins; venous incompetence (by duplex); a tender, indurated

[Relevance of deep venous thrombosis of the leg in patients with acute exacerbated COPD].

BACKGROUND: Acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with dyspnoea and, consequently, reduced mobility. Immobility is a recognised risk factor for deep venous thrombosis (DVT), but few data exist regarding the prevalence of DVT in acute exacerbation of COPD. Real-time B-mode ultrasonography (US) is a noninvasive screening-method for the diagnosis of DVT. We therefore used US to investigate the prevalence of DVT in patients with an acute exacerbation of COPD. METHODS: In a prospective cohort study 196 patients with COPD were studied (110 men, 86 female,

Deep venous thrombosis: complete lower extremity venous US evaluation in patients without known risk factors--outcome study.

PURPOSE: To determine the diagnostic value of venous ultrasonography (US) that includes examination of calf veins in symptomatic patients suspected of having deep venous thrombosis (DVT) of the lower extremities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study of the prevalence of DVT included 977 consecutive patients with possible DVT but without known risk factors for DVT. Color flow and compression US were performed. The outcome was the frequency of overlooked, clinically important DVT after negative initial results from bilateral venous US of above- and below-the-knee veins. Patient r

[Varicose and ascending thrombophlebitis--surgical planning for emergency crossectomy by duplex ultrasound].

Ascending thrombophlebitis of the superficial leg veins is known to pass into the deep veins, causing an embolism to develop. Duplex ultrasonography has been shown to be a reliable technique for the evaluation of superficial venous thrombosis. If progression is noted, crossectomy proved to be effective in preventing passage of thrombi into the deep veins.

[Quantitative effect of a standardized pressure bandage on arterial and venous circulation in the lower extremities after heart catheter examination].

AIM: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of a conventional pressure dressing on arterial and venous blood flow of the legs after cardiac catheterization. METHODS: Duplexsonographic measurements were performed of both legs in 100 consecutive patients before catheterization and with a pressure dressing after the procedure. The pressure dressing was applied by means of a pressure pad on the punctured leg, so that the ankle-arm-index (blood pressure at the leg/blood pressure at the arm) was not influenced. Arterial and venous blood flow of the superficial femoral artery and vein were
