[Sports and leisure injuries in summer].

In the first days of summer, there is an increase in the number of summer-related accidents and injuries. Typical for the types of sports practiced in summer, such as ball games, cycling or skating are injuries to the wrist and ankle, knee, head and shoulder. The most frequent victims of swimming accidents are children under four years of age, and adolescents aged between 15 and 19 years. During grilling, burns often occur, most of which, however, are superficial and can be treated in the doctor's office. The incidence of dog bites also increases in summer. In such cases consideration must be

Cases of rabies in Germany following organ transplantation.

UNLABELLED: Management of periacetabular metastatic bone disease (MBD) is challenging, specifically if associated with bone loss or fracture. The aim of this study was to evaluate the complications and outcomes after undergoing peri-acetabular reconstruction using an 'ice-cream cone' pedestal cup endoprostheses for the most severe cases of (impending) pathological acetabular fractures. Fifty cases with severe periacetabular disease were identified. Acetabular defects were classified using the Metastatic Acetabular Classification (MAC). Pre- and post-operative mobility was assessed using the Ea

Review of 1 year's activity in the Grampian travel clinic: the importance of the oil industry.

BACKGROUND: A review of the activities of the Grampian travel clinic was carried out over 1 year to obtain an overall perspective of the clinic workload and to determine how much of the workload was dependent on the oil industry. METHODS: A specially designed data collection sheet was completed for each of the 669 consultations conducted at the Grampian travel clinic, Aberdeen, between February 1, 2002, and January 31, 2003. RESULTS: Patients attending the clinic came in equal numbers from the city of Aberdeen and the Grampian region. Twenty-five percent were traveling for work purposes: 87.

Rabies human diploid cell vaccine elicits cross-neutralising and cross-protecting immune responses against European and Australian bat lyssaviruses.

The ability of antibodies elicited against the rabies human diploid cell vaccine (HDCV) to neutralise European bat Lyssaviruses (EBLV types-1 and -2), Australian bat Lyssavirus and classical rabies virus (RABV) has been evaluated using modified fluorescent antibody virus neutralisation (mFAVN) assays. Ninety-six percent (48 of 50) of the human post-vaccinated sera tested cross-neutralised these viruses (>or=0.5 IU/ml). Cross-protection experiments using inbred mice (RIII, k/k haplotype) were also assessed. Mice were given HDCV (twice by the intra-peritoneal route) and challenged (intra-cranial

Emerging zoonotic encephalitis viruses: lessons from Southeast Asia and Oceania.

The last decade of the 20th Century saw the introduction of an unprecedented number of encephalitic viruses emerge or spread in the Southeast Asian and Western Pacific regions (Mackenzie et al, 2001; Solomon, 2003a). Most of these viruses are zoonotic, either being arthropod-borne viruses or bat-borne viruses. Thus Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, has spread through the Indonesian archipelago to Papua New Guinea (PNG) and to the islands of the Torres Strait of northern Australia, to Pakistan, and to new areas in the Indian subcontinent; a strain of tick-borne enc

History of U.S. military contributions to the study of viral encephalitis.

The viral encephalitides represent 15% (9 of 62) of the infectious diseases identified by the Armed Forces Medical Intelligence Center as being of U.S. military operational importance. Japanese encephalitis, tick-borne encephalitis, Venezuelan equine encephalitis, Eastern equine encephalitis, Western equine encephalitis, West Nile fever, rabies, St. Louis encephalitis, and Murray Valley (Australian) encephalitis are included on the Armed Forces Medical Intelligence Center threat list. This article reviews the U.S. military contributions to the prevention and control of the first seven of these

The molecular epidemiology of rabies associated with chiropteran hosts in Mexico.

While large-scale dog vaccination campaigns have significantly reduced urban rabies throughout Mexico, reports of sylvatic rabies, including cases of spill-over of bat strains into livestock and humans, are increasing. To improve knowledge of these epidemiological trends, 64 Mexican rabies virus isolates from various host species, have been characterized. Phylogenetic analysis at the viral P locus identified distinct viral strains associated with terrestrial reservoirs (dog, skunk and fox/bobcat) and a variant associated with the insectivorous bat, T. brasiliensis, consistent with prior report

[Control, elimination and eradication of viral immuno preventable diseases in Venezuela].

Vaccination has demonstrated the capacity for the drastic decrease of the prevalence and incidence of several diseases of viral etiology and it has allowed their eradication. Among these human immuno preventable diseases are included poliomyelitis, measles, mumps, chicken pox, rubella, hepatitis A and B, influenza A and yellow fever. In residents, travelers to endemic areas and personal at risk, the vaccines to Japanese and equine encephalitis, rabies and adenovirus can be applied. Venezuela has not escaped from the positive impact in the epidemiology of these illnesses as a consequence of the

Vaccinations are among the most important measures for maintaining the health during journeys in the tropics. Vaccination against Yellow Fever is compulsory for many African countries and for French Guyana. Vaccinations against Meningococcal Meningitis is compulsory for pilgrimage to Mecca. All travellers to tropical countries should be vaccinated against Hepatitis A, Diphtheria-Tetanus and against Measles for people below forty years of age. In addition vaccinations against Poliomyelitis, Typhoid Fever, Hepatitis B, Rabies and Japanese Encephalitis should be provided according to the duration

[Surgical treatment of obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome after velopharyngeal ring ligation procedure].

Purpose  A degenerative meniscus lesion is a slowly developing process typically involving a horizontal cleavage in a middle-aged or older person. When the knee is symptomatic, arthroscopic partial meniscectomy has been practised for a long time with many case series reporting improved patient outcomes. Since 2002, several randomised clinical trials demonstrated no additional benefit of arthroscopic partial meniscectomy compared to non-operative treatment, sham surgery or sham arthroscopic partial meniscectomy. These results introduced controversy in the medical community and made clinical dec

Immunizations, neonatal jaundice, and animal-induced injuries.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To concisely review data published over the past year on three topics pertinent to the practicing pediatrician: immunizations, neonatal jaundice, and animal-induced injuries. RECENT FINDINGS: Updates on immunizations, including varicella and pneumococcus in the post-vaccine era, use of a polyvalent conjugated meningococcal vaccine, and influenza vaccination during a vaccine shortage are discussed. Mortality and morbidity from varicella, and risk of invasive disease from pneumococcal infections have declined. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers fo

[Travel vaccination recommendations for Central and Eastern European countries based on country-specific risk profiles].

Within the last years, an increasing trend of voyages to Central and Eastern European destinations could be observed. However, Europeans travelling within their own continent do not consider themselves as travellers exposed to possibly travel-associated infections since problem awareness among tourists as well as consulting doctors is rather scanty. The objective of this expert statement is to outline country-specific risk profiles as well as guidelines with regard to relevant travel immunizations for this region. These recommendations are mainly based on risk estimates according to national i

[Prevention of the development and importation of infections in members of the Army of the Czech Republic participating in foreign missions].

Over the last years, Czech soldiers became involved in several foreign missions. In 2001-2003 more than 4000 persons participated in such missions. Since their activities are typically associated with high health risks including that of acquiring infectious diseases, the significance of prevention is underlined. Preventive antiepidemic measures taken in soldiers of the Army of the Czech Republic before their deployment and upon return home are described. Prior to being dispatched on a foreign mission any soldier is screened at the department for occupational diseases at the military hospital.

Travelling to Africa: health risks reviewed.

Africa's varied ecology presents a wide range of travel health threats: infections; accidents; envenomations; an uncertain drug supply; problematic access to competent medical care outside South Africa. Important vaccine preventable diseases include yellow fever, meningococcal disease, typhoid, polio, rabies, and hepatitis A and B; routine vaccinations should be up to date. Much, but not all, of sub-Saharan Africa is malarious with chloroquine resistant falciparum dominating; chemoprophylaxis and personal protection measures will often be indicated. Other threats are less obvious, e.g. helmint
