INTRODUCTION: Percutaneous mitral valve repair with Mitraclip device has been approved for the treatment of symptomatic mitral valve regurgitation in patients deemed high surgical risk. It's unclear whether the presence of preexisting coronary arterial disease (CAD) affects the postprocedural outcomes of Mitraclip.
METHODS: The study population was extracted from the 2016 Nationwide Readmissions Data (NRD) using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modifications/Procedure Coding System (ICD-10-CM/PCS) for Mitraclip, preexisting CAD, and postprocedural complic

BACKGROUND: Chest radiation therapy (CRT) for malignant thoracic neoplasms is associated with development of valvular heart disease years later. As previous radiation exposure can complicate surgical treatment, transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has emerged as an alternative. However, outcomes data are lacking for TAVR patients with a history of CRT.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of all patients who underwent a TAVR procedure at a single institution between September 2012 and November 2018. Among 1341 total patients, 50 had previous CRT. These were propensity-matched

IMPORTANCE: In a recent meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials, femoropopliteal artery revascularization with paclitaxel drug-coated devices was associated with increased long-term all-cause mortality compared with non-drug-coated devices. However, to our knowledge, these findings have not been replicated in other data sources and may be subject to confounding from missing data associated with patient withdrawal and loss to follow-up.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate differences in all-cause mortality between patients who were treated with drug-coated devices vs non-drug-coated devices for femorop

BACKGROUND: The procedure aims to show our results with a novel nontumescent, nonthermal technique to treat varicose veins. The V-block occlusion stent is a minimally invasive device for treating reflux of the great saphenous vein (GSV). It is an office-based procedure that does not require tumescence anesthesia. The V-block stent is a self-expandable device that functions as a vein occluder and blood clot trap. Once the V-block is in place, further treatment of the saphenous vein such as ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy can be performed. The V-block device is intended to eliminate the possibil

Background: Septal reduction remains an important target of current therapeutic modalities in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). Surgical septal myectomy has long been considered the gold standard in pharmacotherapy-refractory severely symptomatic patients with marked left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction. In recent years, percutaneous alcohol septal ablation (ASA) has matured into the preferred strategy for patients with favourable anatomy and no other coexisting surgically amenable disease. Methods: We discuss 26 HOCM patients with persistent dyspnoea, angina or synco

PURPOSE: To identify factors independently associated with disease recurrence after venoplasty and stent placement for May-Thurner syndrome (MTS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifty-nine consecutive patients (age, 47 y ± 15; 93% female) were identified who had undergone endovascular stent placement for MTS. Patient charts were reviewed for demographic data, risk factors for venous thrombosis, comorbidities, and venous inflow or outflow at first follow-up (3 wk to 6 mo after treatment). Logistic regression was used to identify independent predictors of symptom recurrence or repeat intervention, and

BACKGROUND: Ultra-high density mapping (HDM) is a promising tool in the treatment of patients with complex arrhythmias. In adults with congenital heart disease (CHD), rhythm disorders are among the most common complications but catheter ablation can be challenging due to heterogenous anatomy and complex arrhythmogenic substrates. Here, we describe our initial experience using HDM in conjunction with novel automated annotation algorithms in patients with moderate to great CHD complexity.
METHODS: We studied a series of consecutive adult patients with moderate to great CHD complexity and an ind

OBJECTIVE: Tuberculosis is one of the most infectious diseases worldwide and lung cancer is one of the leading causes of death. The major contagious agent for tuberculosis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis), has been well studied for its pathogenicity. Even though there are studies showing that patients with a history of tuberculosis are more likely to develop lung cancer, the association between M. tuberculosis and lung cancer largely remains unknown. In this study, we used in situ hybridization to analyze lung tissues from patients who underwent surgical resection or bronchoscopy

BACKGROUND: Proper vessel sizing during endovascular interventions is crucial to avoid adverse procedural and clinical outcomes. LumenRECON (LR) is a novel, nonimaging, 0.035-inch wire-based technology that uses the physics-based principle of Ohm's law to provide a simple, real-time luminal size while also providing a platform for therapy delivery. This study evaluated the accuracy, reliability, and safety of the LR system in patients presenting for a femoropopliteal artery intervention.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This multicenter, prospective pilot study of 24 patients presenting for peripheral in

BACKGROUND: The use of intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IOM) has become commonplace in many neurosurgical procedures as a tool to reduce the risk of complications through the early identification of reversible neurologic compromise. Although complications related to IOM itself are exceedingly rare, recognizing their clinical presentation in the postoperative neurosurgical patient is essential for the early identification and implementation of appropriate treatment.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The authors present a case report of a patient who developed postoperative acute compartment syndrom

BACKGROUND AND STUDY OBJECTIVE: Different studies have shown a good long-term survival with improvement of symptoms and hemodynamics after percutaneous septal ablation (PTSMA), similar to myectomy considered to be the therapeutic "gold standard" for symptomatic hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM). Furthermore, desobliteration of left ventricular (LV) outflow may modify features of the disease considered to be risk-relevant, such as magnitude of LV hypertrophy, outflow gradient, and left atrial (LA) size. The aim oft this study was to examine predictors of long-term mortality in a la

OBJECTIVES: We herein report a single-center experience with the Portico TAVI system. Main focus was set on outcomes in patients with impaired left ventricular (LV) function and predictors for permanent pacemaker (PPM) implantation.
METHODS: Between 05/2014 and 10/2017, 106 consecutive patients received TAVI using the Portico device. For comparison of patients with/without impaired LV function, and determination of multi-slice computed tomography and electrocardiogram correlates for PPM implantation subgroups were built (Subgroup I: LVEF ≥ 50%, n = 69, Subgroup II: LVEF < 50%, n = 37; Subgrou

BACKGROUND: In patients with atrial fibrillation, left atrial appendage closure with the Watchman device prevents thromboembolism from the left atrial appendage; however, thrombus may form on the left atrial face of the device, and then potentially embolize. Herein, we studied the incidence, predictors, and clinical outcome of device-related thrombus (DRT) using a large series of clinical trial cohorts of patients undergoing Watchman implantation.
METHODS: We studied the device arms of 4 prospective Food and Drug Administration trials: PROTECT-AF (Watchman Left Atrial Appendage System for Emb

OBJECTIVE Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a commonly occurring disease, particularly among young women of child-bearing age. The underlying pathophysiology for this disease has remained largely unclear; however, the recent literature suggests that focal outflow obstruction of the transverse sinus may be the cause. The purpose of this study was to report one group's early experience with transverse venous sinus stenting in the treatment of IIH and assess its effectiveness. METHODS The authors performed a retrospective chart review to identify patients who had undergone stenting of

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) requires the use of nephrotoxic contrast. Patients with chronic kidney disease are more prone to develop contrast-induced nephropathy after utilization of contrast. Doppler ultrasound (duplex)-guided PTA (DuPTA) is a novel technique and has recently proven to be a successful alternative to conventional PTA in the treatment of iliac stenotic disease, without the use of contrast. In this randomized controlled trial, we evaluated whether DuPTA is as effective as conventional PTA in the treatment of iliac arterial stenotic disease.
