BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly altered the circulation of respiratory viruses in children, changing the epidemiology of acute lower respiratory tract infections. In the postpandemic period, respiratory pathogens showed marked temporal variability. The 2024-2025 season was the first respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season in Italy during which RSV immunoprophylaxis with nirsevimab was implemented, allowing evaluation of recent trends in pediatric hospitalizations.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective multicenter study across 16 pediatric hospitals in Italy. Hospitalizations of

BACKGROUND: The long-term cardiovascular sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection, a major component of Post-Acute COVID-19 Syndrome (PACS), is a global health challenge. However, detailed characterization of fatal cardiovascular outcomes following COVID-19 hospitalization, particularly from the Middle East, remains limited. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the incidence and clinical characteristics of cardiovascular mortality among patients discharged after COVID-19-associated hospitalizations in southern Iran. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective data-linkage study between regional death certific

BACKGROUND: The emergence of SARS-CoV-2 and introduction of COVID-19 vaccines into immunologically naïve populations may alter the dynamics of other acute viral respiratory infections (viral ARIs) and vice versa. Competing forces, including viral interference, cross-reactive immunity, shared susceptibility, and immune dysregulation, may affect the risk. The potential net impact of various immune-priming events and their timing on the risk of viral ARIs is largely unknown.
METHODS: Using data from the National Clinical Cohort Collaborative (N3C) COVID-19 Enclave, this retrospective population-

RATIONALE: Acute respiratory infections (ARIs) are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children under five years of age and contribute to healthcare visits and hospitalisations globally. Vitamin D deficiency is common amongst pregnant women and young children. Given that vitamin D supplementation is safe, affordable, and easy to administer, its potential to reduce ARI-related healthcare visits holds substantial public health relevance. This review evaluates the benefit and harm of vitamin D supplementation in preventing ARI-related healthcare visits in young children, aiming to infor

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the most common causes of acute respiratory infections in both children and adults over 60. RSV can cause severe lower respiratory tract infections in older adults, leading to an increase of morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of hospitalizations due to RSV infections in the Abruzzo region of Italy among patients aged over 60 years.
METHODS: A retrospective study was performed in the Abruzzo region, evaluating all hospitalizations performed during years 2018-2023. Age- and gender-standardized hosp

Diversity of the microbiota, which is essential for lower airway homeostasis, is greatly altered in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is the ultimate protective treatment for the lungs of patients with severe ARDS, but little is known about its effect on the lung microbiota of these patients. To evaluate the effect of ECMO on the lung microbiota of ARDS patients, we performed 16S rRNA and fungal ITS1 profiling and shotgun sequencing on bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) collected from ARDS patients due to COVID-19. BALF was collected from 1

Limited studies on the seasonality of pharyngitis and tonsillitis suggest subtle but unexplained fluctuations in case numbers that deviate from patterns seen in other respiratory diagnoses. Data on weekly acute respiratory infection diagnoses from 2010-2022, provided by the Polish National Healthcare Fund, included a total of 360 million visits. Daily mean temperature and relative humidity were sourced from the Copernicus Climate Data Store. Seasonal pattern was estimated using the STL model, while the impact of temperature was calculated with SARIMAX. A recurring early-summer wave of an unspe

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 vaccination emerged as a key strategy to reduce disease severity and curb the pandemic's spread, proving crucial in preventing complications and hospitalizations. Despite its positive impact, hospital readmissions due to COVID-19 reinfections have been observed, influenced by emerging variants and individual clinical and demographic characteristics. Given the limited evidence on such readmissions, studies based on representative samples are essential to better understand the associated factors. This study aims to analyze the role of vaccination, identify clinical and demog
