Delayed availability of vaccine coverage statistics can limit within-season situational awareness for seasonal influenza vaccination campaigns. This longitudinal ecological study evaluated influenza vaccination coverage (IVC) in Spain across five seasons (2018/19 to 2022/23) using the real-time monitoring tool Gripómetro, based on weekly landline telephone interviews conducted for six consecutive weeks starting 14 d after campaign launch. Adults aged 18-80 y from the Spanish population and healthcare workers (HCWs) from public primary care centers were surveyed using a semi-structured question

UNLABELLED: Built environment surveillance is a proven approach for tracking disease burden of some viruses within hospitals and long-term care facilities. However, studies in clinical settings are lacking for simultaneously surveying targets in a built environment using targeted metatranscriptomics. We swabbed six discrete floor locations within an acute care center's emergency department (ED) in Ottawa, Canada, and sequenced cDNA using a 132 viral taxa panel, identifying viral burden across sampling locations and time. The determined SARS-CoV-2 variant profile across time was matched to prov

BACKGROUND: Acute respiratory tract infections are a major cause of morbidity and healthcare burden worldwide. Because many respiratory pathogens such as influenza viruses, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), Rhinovirus/Enterovirus, and SARS-CoV-2 present with overlapping clinical features, rapid and accurate etiological diagnosis is essential for effective patient management. Syndromic multiplex PCR panels, particularly the BioFire FilmArray Respiratory Panel 2.1 Plus (RP2.1 Plus), enable the simultaneous detection of a broad range of viral and bacterial pathogens, facilitating the identificat

During the 2023 Australian winter respiratory virus season, 2,000 clinical samples were prospectively tested over 47 days (July-August 2023) using the BioFire Respiratory Panel 2.1 plus (RP2.1+) assay, which detects 19 viral and 4 bacterial targets. These samples were retrospectively tested with the RespiV PlexPlus (RespiV) assay, which detects 14 viral targets. RespiV demonstrated high overall percentage agreement with RP2.1+ (99.2%), with a negative percent agreement exceeding 99% for the majority of shared targets. Positive percent agreement was more variable across targets, with more posit

Respiratory virus (RV) infections cause significant morbidity in patients with hematologic malignancies (HM) and hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HCT) recipients. However, predictors of progression from upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) to lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) in the nosocomial setting remain poorly characterized, particularly beyond HCT-only cohorts. The effectiveness of URTI-stage antiviral therapy is also unclear, and nosocomial seasonal patterns in hematology settings have not been well described. This study aimed to identify risk factors for URTI-to-LRTI prog

BACKGROUND: Diverse quarantine measures against the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic have affected the distribution patterns of respiratory pathogens. This study analyzed changes in the incidence and distribution of major respiratory pathogens during the COVID-19 pandemic and after the endemic declaration. In addition, the study aimed to provide a basis for future community-centered infectious disease response strategies by identifying co-infection patterns and whether pathogens re-emerge after mitigation.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, the results of 105,619 respiratory pa

This study aimed to assess the relationship between clinical course and influenza virus characteristics by quantifying viral load and performing phylogenetic analyses in hospitalized children. Children aged 0-3 years presenting with an acute respiratory tract infection (RTI) at the Childrens' Hospital Heidelberg/Germany were included and nasopharyngeal swabs were collected. Viral load was quantified by real-time polymerase chain reaction and influenza virus (sub)type was identified by haemagglutinin gene sequencing. Among 1464 respiratory samples collected, 139 were positive for influenza viru

BACKGROUND: Although many children infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) or seasonal influenza virus experience a mild course of disease, both infections can lead to hospitalization and, in a subset of children, severe disease requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission for respiratory or cardiac support. To compare the epidemiology, risk factors, clinical presentation and outcomes of children hospitalized with COVID-19 or seasonal influenza, and to identify factors associated with severe disease.
METHODS: Data were collected prospectively within a

After the COVID-19 emergency, respiratory viruses have re-emerged with changing and region-specific patterns. We aimed to characterize how these shifts affected viral circulation, clinical severity, and management of pediatric viral-associated lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD)across two post-pandemic seasons in Rome, Italy. We conducted a retrospective observational study of children (< 6 years) hospitalized with PCR-confirmed viral LRTDs during the 2022-2023 and 2023-2024 seasons. Of the 1,249 children hospitalized for LRTD, 49.08% were admitted during the 2022-2023 season and 50.92% dur
