Rhinorrhea as a Result of Alzheimer's Disease Treatment: A Case Report.

This report describes a case of persistent rhinorrhea caused by donepezil and successfully treated with azelastine in an 84-year-old male treated with donepezil for Alzheimer's disease (AD) who experienced excessive rhinorrhea. After initiation of donepezil for AD the patient showed increased discomfort with rhinorrhea. A trial with an oral second-generation antihistamine provided no benefit. Azelastine 0.1% nasal spray was initiated and successfully reduced the rhinorrhea. A less-oftenreported side effect of donepezil that may impact patients is rhinorrhea, also described as rhinitis or nasop

[Application of nasal saline irrigation in nasal inflammatory diseases].

Nasal irrigation is a common topical treatment in rhinology. Saline irrigation(SI) is the most common and basic way of nasal irrigation. Mechanisms of action of SI contain physical clearance, regulation of nasal mucociliary function, enhancement of antimicrobial activity of nasal secretions and the effects of ions.Current solutions for SI differ in composition and physicochemical properties, specifically presence of additional ions, concentration of saline, pH values and temperature. Positive pressure should be an optimized method of SI. The side effects of SI include nasal discomfort, otalgia

Bacillus sp. probiotic supplementation diminish the Escherichia coli F4ac infection in susceptible weaned pigs by influencing the intestinal immune response, intestinal microbiota and blood metabolomics.

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is frequently associated with type II mixed cryoglobulinaemia (MC), a benign lymphoproliferative disease (LPD). More recently, HCV has been implicated as a possible aetiologic factor of B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (B-NHL). CD81, a B-cell surface receptor, has been proposed as a receptor for HCV binding and entry in circulating B cells. The stimulation of CD81 complex enables B cells to respond to lower concentrations of antigen and finally induces B-cell proliferation. We studied the phenotypic expression of CD81, CD19 and CD5 on circulating B cells in

[Treatment of allergic and vasomotor rhinitis: the role of beclomethasone dipropionate and hyaluronic acid (with high molecular weight).].

Inflammatory rhinitis is a very common disorder. It includes allergic rhinitis (AR) and non-allergic rhinitis (NAR). Nasal inflammation is shared by both disorders. So, anti-inflammatory treatment is indicated for both. Beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP) is a corticosteroid that is long time available both as intranasal spray and aerosol solution. BDP is a corticosteroid with proved efficacy in the treatment of rhinitis, both as spray and aerosol. Safety issue has been satisfactory explored, thus BDP is usually safe and well tolerated. Hyaluronic acid (HA) with high molecular weight has anti-in

Surgical Management of Nonallergic Rhinitis.

Nonallergic rhinitis (NAR) describes chronic symptoms of nasal congestion, obstruction, and rhinorrhea unrelated to a specific allergen based on skin or serum testing. Vasomotor rhinitis is the most frequent subtype of NAR. Although medical management is the first-line treatment of NAR, there is a role for surgical therapy when medications fail to improve symptoms. Surgical options for NAR include inferior turbinate reduction and botulinum toxin injection as well as more directed targeting of the autonomic nerve supply to the nasal cavity through vidian neurectomy, posterior nasal neurectomy,

Cryotherapy for the Treatment of Chronic Rhinitis: A Qualitative Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinitis impacts 60 million Americans and is associated with significant costs for patients. Although medical treatments are first line, some patients require surgical intervention such as vidian or posterial nasal neurectomy. Previous reviews have investigated the role of surgical management in chronic rhinitis, but none have investigated a longstanding treatment with recent interest: cryotherapy. OBJECTIVE: To identify the safety, efficacy, and durability of treatment response of cryotherapy in treating chronic rhinitis. METHODS: A systematic literature review was perfo

An Alternative Method of Endoscopic Intrasphenoidal Vidian Neurectomy.

OBJECTIVE: To develop an easy surgical approach to facilitate clinical management. STUDY DESIGN: A novel transnasal endoscopic 3-step surgical method for vidian neurectomy was designed and tried in 91 cases with a mild-to-severe degree of allergic and nonallergic rhinitis refractory to routine medical therapy. SETTING: Endoscopic vidian neurectomy requires accurate localization of the vidian canal. However, it is not easy to localize during surgery because of its deep location and the complex anatomy of the pterygopalatine fossa. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This technique consists of 3 steps, inc

Sagittal spinopelvic malalignment in degenerative scoliosis patients: isolated correction of symptomatic levels and clinical decision-making.

BACKGROUND: VEGF-targeted therapy has become the mainstay of treatment for majority of mRCC patients. For most patients, benefit is short-lived and therefore treatment remains palliative in intent. HD IL2 is an effective immunotherapy treatment capable of durable remission in some patients but its unselected use has been difficult due to its modest response rate and considerable adverse effects. Using set pathology criteria as a selection tool in clinical practice, we have been able to show improved outcomes in our previous report. Here, we present an updated and extended report of this treatm

[Nasal turbinate surgery].

The nose forms the first 8 cm of the upper respiratory tract and is responsible for cleansing, humidification, and temperature control of the supplied air. This is also referred to as conditioning. The nasal valve region, formed by the head of the lower nasal concha, portions of the cartilaginous septum, and the upper lateral cartilage, is responsible for diffusing and accelerating the respiratory airflow. Prerequisite are regular mucociliary clearance and sufficient air passage. Hypertrophy of the lower nasal turbinate is one of the most common causes of symptomatic nasal congestion. In uncle

Kinetic oscillatory stimulation of nasal mucosa in non-allergic rhinitis: comparison of patient self-administration and caregiver administration regarding pain and treatment effect. A randomized clinical trial.

CONCLUSION: Patient self-administration of the Kinetic Oscillatory Stimulation (KOS)-catheter was a fully acceptable alternative to insertion of the catheter by physician with helmet fixation, in patients with non-allergic rhinitis (NAR). The approaches were equivalent regarding pain. The treatment effect in the patient self-administration group was not inferior. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether self-administration of a KOS-catheter was different compared to insertion by a physician, assessed with patient reported pain on a visual analogue scale (VAS). Also, to evaluate the difference in nasal
