A Diagnostic Dilemma: Proteinase-3 (PR3)-Positive Anti-neutrophil Cytoplasmic Autoantibodies in Eosinophilic Granulomatosis With Polyangiitis.

Eosinophilic granulomatosis with polyangiitis (EGPA) is a multifaceted diseased vasculitis typically associated with myeloperoxidase-perinuclear-anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (+MPO-P-ANCA). Although rare, the diagnosis should be considered in patients with difficult-to-control or late-onset asthma and extrathoracic disease. We present the case of a 37-year-old male with adult-onset asthma and chronic rhinitis hospitalized with pancreatitis and hypoxemia. Blood investigations demonstrated eosinophilia with elevated lipase, and bronchoscopy demonstrated multiple endobronchial lesions with

[Chronic rhinitis in dogs and cats - an overview of etiology, diagnostics and therapy].

Chronic rhinitis is one of the most common diseases of the upper respiratory tract in dogs and cats. A multifactorial etiology is likely in most patients. In cats in particular, it is assumed that chronic rhinitis is a consequence of a previous viral infection. Affected animals may show unilateral or bilateral serous to mucopurulent nasal discharge or epistaxis. The diagnosis is based on histopathological examination of nasal mucosal biopsies once other causes of chronic nasal problems such as neoplasia, fungal infections, dental disease, parasites, polyps, or foreign bodies have been ruled ou

Evolving paradigms of treatment of allergic and nonallergic rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a prevalent disease affecting approximately 15% of the US population, which is approximately 50 million individuals. More broadly, it is estimated that 400 to 500 million people worldwide experience AR. Not surprisingly, AR has a significant impact on quality of life due to increased fatigue, cognitive impairment, sleep disturbances, presenteeism or absenteeism, and impairment of performance, which all contribute to an increased cost burden to the medical system. Recent studies have identified social determinants of health including income level, age of migration from

Innovative surgical approaches for chronic rhinitis: nasal neurectomy mechanisms, techniques, and clinical outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic rhinitis (CR) represents a prevalent, persistent inflammatory condition of the nasal mucosa, substantially impacting patients' quality of life. Despite standard pharmacotherapy, many patients with refractory symptoms do not achieve adequate relief, highlighting the need for alternative interventions such as nasal neurectomy. AREAS COVERED: Literature was reviewed on the PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases published from March 1961 to April 2025. Our review discusses the underlying mechanisms, surgical techniques, and clinical outcomes of different nasal neurecto

Unilateral Clear Thin Rhinorrhea: How Often Is It a Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak?

OBJECTIVES: Determine frequencies of conditions causing unilateral clear thin rhinorrhea (UCTR), and assess whether certain clinical features are associated with CSF rhinorrhea. METHODS: This was a retrospective review identifying all patients presenting with UCTR to one rhinologist over a 6-year period. The conditions causing UCTR were recorded, and the following demographic or clinical variables were collected when available: body-mass index (BMI, kg/m2), gender, age, race, and self-reported drainage volume (whether the UCTR dripped out the nose and could be collected, or it felt like a wet

Extended Endoscopic Posterior Nasal Neurectomy.

A surgical technique for extended endoscopic posterior nasal neurectomy (EPNN) is described, which includes transection of both posterior nasal and posterolateral nasal nerves to treat medically refractory chronic rhinitis. This approach targets a broader range of autonomic and sensory fibers than a traditional EPNN. A case example demonstrates complete symptom resolution at 6-month follow-up.

Assessing the Impact of Home Environmental Exposures on Allergic Rhinitis Using Real-Time Air Quality Monitoring and Symptom Assessment: Observational Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Rhinitis is the most common sinonasal condition and poses a significant cost burden. Rhinitis symptom control is associated with exposure to environmental triggers (eg, aeroallergens, pollutants, and irritants). While people spend much of their time at home, studies examining the association of rhinitis symptoms with home environmental exposures, especially in low-income, urban, and racial or ethnic minorities, are limited. Frequently, 3 types of surveys are used in ecological momentary assessment (EMA): a survey conducted at a predetermined rate, an event-triggered survey, and a f

Beneath the Label - Evaluating the FDA Approval of Copenhagen Classic Snuff as a Modified Risk Tobacco Product.

Description In this review, we critically evaluate the Food and Drug Administration's modified risk tobacco product (MRTP) status granted to a smokeless tobacco product (March 2023), Copenhagen Classic Snuff (CCS). This new status necessitates an assessment of the product CCS use and its public health impacts. We assess the impact of CCS as it relates to the reduction of lung cancer risk and the potential increased risk for nasopharyngeal cancer, chronic rhinitis, nicotine dependence, and other health hazards. Concerns persist regarding nicotine's harm and public misperception due to risk recl
