Vibratory Angioedema Due to Vigorous Nose Blowing: A Case Report.

Vibratory angioedema is a rare type of chronic inducible angioedema with a variety of triggers reported in the literature. Standard management of vibratory angioedema involves avoidance of known triggers, as well as stepwise therapy starting with second-generation antihistamines. We present a unique case of vibratory angioedema provoked by vigorous nose blowing and improved with treatment of chronic rhinitis. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of vibratory angioedema associated with this specific trigger. Recognition of nose blowing as a potential precipitant may have meaningful

Clinical features, pathophysiological mechanisms, and multidisciplinary management strategies for rhinitis-induced adenoid facies in children and adolescents: a review.

Chronic rhinitis and its associated persistent nasal obstruction and mouth breathing are core factors leading to the development of characteristic "rhinitis face" or "adenoid facies" in children and adolescents. This review elucidates the diverse clinical manifestations of "rhinitis face," including: persistent open-mouth posture; abnormal patterns of facial skeletal growth, such as midface hypoplasia and increased lower anterior facial height resulting in "long face syndrome"; alterations in jaw morphology and position, including maxillary constriction, high-arched palate, and mandibular retr

Effect of inferior turbinate infracture on outcomes of probing for congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction.

BACKGROUND: Published reports, all of which are underpowered to detect a difference, demonstrate conflicting findings on the benefit of inferior turbinate infracture during congenital nasolacrimal duct (CNLD) probing. The purpose of this study was to report the effect of inferior turbinate infracture on outcomes of CNLD probing and assess for long-term complications from the procedure. METHODS: The medical records of all patients <6 years of age who underwent probing for congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction (CNLDO) at a single referral center from January 1, 2002, through December 31, 201

Anterior Nasal Nerves: A Cadaveric Anatomic and Immunohistochemical Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sensory and autonomic nerves supply the sinonasal mucosa and contribute to chronic rhinitis, rhinosinusitis, and craniofacial pain. While posterior and posterolateral nasal nerves have been studied anatomically and histologically, nerves supplying the anterolateral nasal wall (ALNW) have been incompletely studied. The purpose of this cadaveric study was to investigate the ALNW's nerve supply. METHODS: Sixteen fresh cadaver heads were dissected. First, six heads underwent unilateral ALNW dissection to harvest nerves coursing through the bony ALNW, and these were termed anterior nas

The Role of Nasal Cytology in the Phenotyping and Monitoring of Chronic Rhinitis in Children.

BACKGROUND: Local allergic rhinitis (LAR) is a rhinitis subtype characterised by an IgE-mediated response in the nasal mucosa. Although the nasal provocation test (NPT) is the diagnostic gold standard, it is impractical in many centres. Consequently, patients are often misclassified as having non-allergic rhinitis, delaying appropriate treatment. This study evaluated the role of nasal cytology in the classifying and monitoring paediatric allergic rhinitis (AR), distinguishing probable LAR (pLAR), and guiding treatment. METHODS: This retrospective study analysed data from 255 patients diagnose

Variability of Diagnostic Outcomes in Nasal Allergen Challenge: The Role of Combined Subjective and Objective Indicators.

BACKGROUND: Nasal allergen challenge (NAC) is currently the only available test to confirm nasal responsiveness to allergens and is a core diagnostic tool for allergic rhinitis. NAC is currently diagnosed by combining existing subjective measures and objective assessment methods in pairs to assess outcomes, based on a strong positive result for a single item or a moderately positive result for a combination of two items. However, there are few data on the diagnostic outcomes and characteristics of its various diagnostic combinations. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the differences and characteristics

[Pediatric pneumological aspects in the care of children with Down Syndrome].

Pulmonary problems are common in children with Downsyndrome/trisomy 21, alongside other health issues, but are often given too little attention. The aim of this review is to summarize these aspects for pediatric pulmonologists. Narrow nasal passages, a small pharynx and larynx, in combination with relative macroglossia, other airway malformations, and generalized muscular hypotonia, lead to glossoptosis, which in very young infants frequently causes obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. If left untreated, this is associated with impaired cognitive development. The children also suffer from chronic
