Foreign bodies and odontogenic lesions of the maxillary sinus can lead to chronic rhinosinusitis, particularly when located in compartments that are difficult to access surgically. We report two cases managed using the endoscopic prelacrimal recess approach (EPLA). The first case involved a 76-year-old woman presenting with chronic facial pain and purulent discharge caused by a retained silicone fragment following bilateral inferior turbinectomy performed 20 years earlier. The second case concerned a 28-year-old woman with recurrent left maxillary sinusitis secondary to a 2.1-cm pericoronal cy

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is a rare multisystem necrotizing vasculitis involving small to medium-sized vessels and is commonly associated with proteinase 3 antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (PR3 ANCA). While pulmonary and renal manifestations are classically recognized, atypical presentations with predominant constitutional, sinonasal, ophthalmological, and endocrine manifestations may result in substantial diagnostic delay. We present the case of a 28-year-old woman with a two-year history of profound fatigue, generalized myalgia, anosmia, chronic sinonasal symptoms, headache

Streptococcus anginosus is an important cause of pyogenic infections, bacteremia, and chronic maxillary sinusitis. Mobile genetic elements (MGEs) play a key role in lateral gene transfer, resulting in broad transfer of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, studies on ARG-associated MGEs in S. anginosus are still rare. To fill this gap, we used sequencing data from 11 clinical S. anginosus to characterize their mobilome diversity through comparative analysis. We found 47 well-characterized MGEs, including 23 putative integrative and conjugative elements (ICEs), 16 prophages/integrative m

OBJECTIVES: This research examines the prevalence of chronic maxillary sinusitis in pre-adults from multiple Dutch sites, while also considering the effects of associated risk factors such as time period (i.e., urbanization), living conditions, and socioeconomic status. Our aim was to investigate how different risk factors impacted childhood upper respiratory health throughout the Dutch medieval and Post-medieval periods.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We selected 13 sites representative of different time periods (475-1866 CE), living environments (i.e., rural and urban), and socioeconomic status to

BACKGROUND: Retained wooden foreign bodies in the maxillary sinus, particularly with prolonged latency, pose significant diagnostic, and therapeutic challenges due to their low radiodensity and resemblance to fungal infections on imaging. This case highlights the role of electromagnetic navigation-guided endoscopic sinus surgery (ENG-ESS) in managing complex long-latency foreign bodies.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 31-year-old man presented with recurrent right infraorbital abscesses and facial swelling for over a year and was initially misdiagnosed with fungal sinusitis. Conventional treatments, inc

Accessory maxillary ostia (AMOs) are relatively common anatomical variants of the paranasal sinuses. They present as small, oval or circular openings found at or near the maxillary sinus, in the posterior nasal fontanelle, anterior nasal fontanelle, or, rarely, in the hiatus semilunaris. We present a unique cadaveric report of bilateral AMOs, exploring the causes, associated findings, and anatomical variations within the maxillary sinus. During the routine dissection of the nasal cavity, three AMOs were discovered in an 84-year-old female donor, who passed away from a myocardial infarction. N

PURPOSE: Odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is a frequent but underdiagnosed condition requiring multidisciplinary management. This study aims to compare outcomes between single-stage combined surgical treatment by otolaryngology and maxillofacial surgery teams versus non-combined approaches, and to evaluate whether the type of prior treatment influences the need for reintervention or secondary procedures.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective observational study including 96 patients with ODS surgically treated between January 2019 and December 2024. Patients were categorized according to etiology

Background: Odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is a frequent but under-recognized cause of chronic maxillary sinusitis, often requiring multidisciplinary management. Understanding clinical and microbiological predictors for oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS) treatment may aid in early risk stratification. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 47 patients diagnosed with ODS at a tertiary referral center between January 2023 and April 2025. Clinical characteristics, dental pathologies, and microbiological findings were analyzed. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed t

Chronic inflammatory diseases of the maxillary sinus can present well-defined, expansile radiolucent features, necessitating differential diagnosis from true neoplasms. Pleomorphic adenoma, although rare, is one of the neoplasms included in the list of differential diagnoses, and it may occasionally arise in the maxillary sinus. However, inflammatory conditions such as mucoceles, postoperative maxillary cysts and chronic bacterial maxillary sinusitis can also cause thinning and expansion of the sinus walls due to prolonged obstruction. The present study describes a case of chronic maxillary si

Background: Chronic maxillary sinusitis is most often linked to dental, allergic, or anatomical etiologies, with foreign body-induced forms remaining rare. This case report describes a unique occurrence of chronic maxillary sinusitis resulting from misplaced hyaluronic filler due to a facial esthetic procedure. Case presentation: A 60-year-old woman experienced right-sided maxillary sinusitis symptoms for three years after hyaluronic filler injections. Multi-slice computed tomography showed total sinus opacification, a vermicular foreign body, and a small anterior wall perforation. The patient

UNLABELLED: RELEVANCE OF THE PROBLEM AND AIM OF THE WORK. Chronic fungal maxillary sinusitis is an increasingly diagnosed condition in clinical practice. The diagnostic and therapeutic processes remain complex due to the nonspecific nature of clinical manifestations and the absence of standardized management protocols. The objective of this study is to assess the reliability and efficacy of current diagnostic and therapeutic methods based on recent scientific evidence.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. PubMed, ScienceDirect, and C

Bacterial odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) arises from maxillary dental issues or oral procedures, and affects at least the maxillary sinuses, with or without other paranasal sinus involvement. It has been historically underreported, in contrast to more recent findings attributing 25-40% of chronic maxillary sinusitis to dental causes. Endodontic infections represent one of the most common causes of ODS. Endodontic factors like root canal infection and microbial proximity to sinus cavities play pivotal roles. Host immunological responses further shape disease severity and progression. This article

Chronic maxillary sinusitis accompanied by severe thickening of the sinus mucosa, blockage of the ostium, and patient-reported symptoms requires preoperative assessment and treatment by an otolaryngologist before maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA). Prescription of antibiotics and nasal saline irrigation are the first choice of treatment; however, endoscopic sinus surgery is considered when the treatment's effect is limited and drug resistance is observed. Nevertheless, MSFA performed in the presence of sinus pathologies have been reported to have favorable results when the lesions are m

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery (eTSS) is a well-established approach for resection of skull-based pathologies such as tuberculum sellae meningiomas; however, central nervous system (CNS) fungal infection is a potential complication, particularly in a patient with concomitant sinusitis.
OBSERVATIONS: A 58-year-old woman with a tuberculum sellae meningioma causing progressive visual disturbance and concurrent asymptomatic chronic maxillary sinusitis underwent eTSS. Six months later, a de novo dura-based mass with peripheral edema, which was assumed to be an aggressive metachrono

BACKGROUND/AIM: The prevalence of chronic sinusitis (CS) in Europe is greater than 10%. The causes of CS are diverse. In some cases, dental treatment in the maxilla as well as fungal infection, such as aspergilloma, can lead to CS. Inadequately treated illnesses, such as type II diabetes, are known risk factors for atypical infections.
CASE REPORT: The present case report describes a 72-year-old female suffering from CS in the maxillary sinus. A few years earlier, the patient received endodontic treatment of a maxillary tooth. For further diagnostics a CT-scan was performed showing an obstruc
