Disease Site-Specific Outcomes in p16-Positive Non-Oropharyngeal Mucosal Head and Neck Cancer.

OBJECTIVES: To report disease-free survival (DFS) in p16-positive non-oropharyngeal head-and-neck squamous-cell carcinoma (HNSCC). METHODS: Curatively-treated non-oropharyngeal HNSCC (2009-2021) were reviewed. DFS was compared among p16-positive, p16-negative, and p16-untested cases for the overall cohort and by disease site. Multivariable analysis estimated adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) for p16-positivity. RESULTS: Among 3061 non-oropharyngeal HNSCC, 91 p16+, 375 p16-, 2595 untested; median follow-up 4.7 years. P16-positive patients had superior 5-year DFS versus p16-/untested (74% vs. 48%/59

Role of Neck Imaging Reporting and Data System in Evaluation of Recurrent/Residual Lesions of Head and Neck Cancers by Contrast-Enhanced Computed Tomography (CECT) With Pathological Correlation.

Introduction Head and neck cancers remain a major global health concern, mainly involving the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, thyroid, and salivary glands. The Neck Imaging Reporting and Data System (NI-RADS) has been developed as a structured framework in order to enhance the quality and consistency of imaging reports for patients undergoing surveillance after treatment for head and neck cancers. NI-RADS provides a standardized lexicon that simplifies the communication of imaging findings. This is crucial given the intricate anatomical and pathological changes that can occur following treatment

SEOM-TTCC clinical guidelines for the treatment of head and neck cancer (2025).

Squamous cell carcinoma of the lip, oral cavity, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx comprises the ninth most common cancer in Spain. While alcohol and tobacco use have long been the primary etiological factors, the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in oropharyngeal cancer is increasing. Diagnoses and relapses should always be discussed by an expert multidisciplinary team. For localized stages, surgery or radiotherapy should be used as single-modality treatments, while locoregional stages require combined modality approaches. In the case of recurrent or metastatic disease, curative intent sho

Conversion surgery following trastuzumab and docetaxel combination therapy for unresectable HER2-positive parotid gland cancer.

Salivary gland cancers (SGCs) are rare and histologically diverse tumors. Among them, salivary duct carcinoma and carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma frequently exhibit HER2 overexpression, for which trastuzumab (Tmab) combined with docetaxel (DTX) has shown clinical efficacy. We report two cases of initially unresectable, HER2-positive parotid gland carcinoma successfully treated with Tmab and DTX, enabling curative surgery. In Case 1, a 68-year-old woman with T4bN2bM0 parotid carcinoma experienced marked tumor shrinkage, allowing surgical resection while preserving the skin and facial nerve. In

[Surgery for benign tracheoesophageal fistula].

OBJECTIVE: To improve the outcomes in patients with tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF), including those with concurrent tracheal stenosis and recurrent fistula, using various modern surgical interventions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: There were 115 patients with TEF in 2004-2023. Annual number of patients doubled when comparing with the period from 1963 to 2002. In 85.4% of cases, TEF was caused by iatrogenic injury of trachea and esophagus after mechanical ventilation or tracheostomy: 56 patients (48.7%) had fistulas after tracheostomy, 42 (36.7%) ones - after intubation. Concurrent TEF and tracheal

NUT carcinoma of the upper respiratory tract: Two case reports and literature review.

NUT carcinoma is a rare and highly aggressive malignancy characterized by the rearrangement of the NUTM1 gene. It typically arises in midline structures, including the respiratory tract. Due to its rarity and poor prognosis, early diagnosis and effective treatment remain challenging. This report presents two cases of NUT carcinoma occurring in the respiratory tract, additionally, a review of the literature is provided to enhance understanding of this disease. Both patients were young females, one tumor was located in the larynx and the other in the left main bronchus. Endoscopic forceps biopsy

Flexible Endoscopic Laser Surgery for Glottic Carcinoma After Radiotherapy Failure: A First Experience.

BACKGROUND: Surgery is the only salvage treatment for radiotherapy (RT) failures in glottic carcinoma management, and total laryngectomy is performed in the majority of cases, resulting in a substantial decline in the quality of life for patients. Transoral CO2 laser microsurgery (TOLMS), as a salvage treatment for RT failures, demonstrated its efficiency, albeit more inferior compared to treatment results obtained in primary glottic carcinoma, but has some limitations, predominantly associated with difficult anatomy and inadequate glottis exposure and also because of mandatory larynx suspensi

Subsite- and histology-specific epidemiology of head and neck cancers in Japan from 2016 to 2019: an application of a new classification of rare cancers.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancers comprise multiple anatomical sites. Due to their rarity, previous studies have often aggregated anatomically or histologically distinct cancers or excluded rare entities altogether. Moreover, the list of head and neck cancer entities has evolved along with the adoption of new pathological insights. METHODS: In our previous study, we proposed a new classification of rare cancers, based on the International Classification of Diseases for Oncology 3.2 coding system, using data from cancer patients at all sites recorded in the National Cancer Registry of Japan. Occupational Exposure to Asbestos-Free Talc and Risk of Respiratory Cancers, Including Larynx, Lung, and Mesothelioma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Evidence suggests a potential link between occupational talc exposure and increased risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma, particularly when talc is contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen. However, the findings remain inconclusive. To clarify this, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies evaluating the incidence and mortality of lung, mesothelioma, and laryngeal cancers among workers exposed to asbestos-free talc. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE (PubMed) and SCOPUS databases up to January 2026 for cohort and case-control studies. Study quality was asses

Infection prevention and control practices, barriers, and associated factors among nurses in Bangladeshi hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) remain a serious concern to patient safety, particularly in resource-limited settings. As frontline healthcare professionals, nurses are essential in preventing HAIs through effective infection prevention and control (IPC) compliance. Thus, nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) on IPC are crucial for IPC success. This study assessed IPC-related KAP among nursing staff of tertiary care hospitals in Bangladesh. METHODS: From January to March 2021, a mixed method survey was conducted across seven public tertiary care hospitals in Bangla

Laryngopharyngeal Liposarcoma: A (Somewhat Docile) Wolf in Sheep's Clothing.

BACKGROUND: Adipocytic tumors of the head and neck are mostly benign, but laryngopharyngeal tumors are uncommon and poorly characterized. We compared the clinicopathologic profile of laryngopharyngeal liposarcomas (LP-LPS) and lipomas (LP-L) across two institutions. DESIGN: Head and neck adipocytic tumors were queried for LP-LPS and LP-L. Demographic, pathologic, immunophenotypic features (including MDM2 amplification status), treatment and outcomes were reviewed. RESULTS: LPS constituted 1.4% (n = 22/1584) of head and neck adipocytic lesions with a disproportionate representation at laryngoph

Kawasaki disease presenting with severe airway obstruction: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease is an acute systemic vasculitis primarily affecting children, typically presenting with persistent fever, rash, conjunctival injection, and oral mucosal changes. Although pharyngeal involvement may occur, severe upper airway obstruction requiring mechanical ventilation is extremely rare. We report a pediatric case of Kawasaki disease manifesting primarily as epiglottitis and laryngeal obstruction. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-month-old boy presented with a 6-day history of persistent fever and a 1-day history of neck swelling and progressive dyspnea. At the time of adm

Advanced Metastatic Laryngeal Carcinoma: A Case Report on Palliative Management in Primary Care.

This case describes a poorly differentiated laryngeal carcinoma diagnosed at an advanced stage. The disease was associated with extensive metastasis and severe functional impairment. The patient had multiple risk factors, including tobacco and alcohol abuse, low health literacy, and poor therapeutic adherence. The patient initially presented with dysphonia, followed by progressive cervical swelling. A biopsy confirmed undifferentiated laryngeal carcinoma. Due to clinical deterioration, an emergency tracheostomy was performed. Imaging revealed an extensive infiltrative tumor involving the laryn

Prevalence of birch pollinosis and oral allergy syndrome in the general population of Hokkaido, Japan.

OBJECTIVE: Birch pollen is the predominant tree pollen allergen in Hokkaido, Japan, and is frequently associated with oral allergy syndrome (OAS). However, most previous studies have been hospital-based, and population-level data remain limited. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional questionnaire survey of residents of Hokkaido recruited through 10 medical institutions and their family members. Data were collected on physician-diagnosed birch pollinosis, oral allergy symptoms after food ingestion, demographic factors, residential area, and comorbid allergic diseases. Associations were evalu

Laryngeal Responses During Non-Invasive Ventilation in Stable Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: An Observational Study.

PURPOSE: Long-term non-invasive ventilation (NIV) is an established therapy for hypercapnic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD); however, many patients remain challenging to ventilate effectively. We hypothesized that NIV-induced laryngeal obstruction (NIV-ILO), observed during laryngoscopy, may contribute to reduced ventilatory effectiveness, and that this obstruction can be identified using laryngeal ultrasound (US). PATIENTS AND METHODS: This exploratory cross-sectional study included 15 participants with stable COPD receiving long-term NIV. Laryngeal responses were assessed using

Regional airway fat distribution and its association with brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome severity in pugs with varying body condition.

Obesity is a recognised risk factor for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) in pugs; however, the mechanisms linking obesity to BOAS remain unclear. Previous veterinary studies have primarily focused on tongue fat, with limited evaluation of other airway regions. This study aimed to investigate the associations between body condition score (BCS) and regional airway fat, and their relationship with BOAS functional grades. Client-owned pugs undergoing BOAS assessment and pre-operative head and neck computed tomography (CT) were enrolled. Fat volumes within the tongue (T), pharynx (

Impact of BECLIN1 haploinsufficiency on goblet cell function and susceptibility to colitis.

BECLIN1 is a central regulator of autophagy and endocytic trafficking essential for epithelial homoeostasis. While complete intestinal epithelial loss of BECLIN1 causes fatal enteritis originating in the small intestine, the consequences of its partial loss in the gut remain unclear. Given that BECLIN1 expression can vary in human disease, we investigated whether reduced BECLIN1 is sufficient to impair gut barrier function. Heterozygous Becn1 deletion (Becn1IEC+/-) in the mouse intestinal epithelium caused subtle but significant defects. These included shortened small intestines and altered ep
