COVID-19: Growing Health Disparity Gaps and an Opportunity for Health Behavior Discovery?

Recently, racial and ethnic disparities within the current coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic at the state level have received attention and notably highlight the ongoing issues surrounding health disparities within the United States. Among the discussions around health disparities lies a discussion on the role of psychosocial stress during this pandemic, especially with broadly applied social distancing and isolation recommendations. In nonpandemic times, psychosocial stressors have a significant association with physiological responses and behavioral responses. Within the current p

Occupational risk factors in health of broiler-farm workers: A systematic review.

The present study aimed to identify gaps in literature regarding occupational risks to broiler farming workers. A systematic review was performed in which inclusion criteria were workers in poultry farms. The search was done between May and June 2019 with online papers. Keywords were "poultry farmer," "poultry worker," and "poultry workers" as terms of an axis of a theoretical framework. Results indicated as predominant topics lung diseases, nasal mucosa or paranasal sinus contamination, and aflatoxicosis. The identified gaps in scientific publications are related to mitigation of occupational

Linking structure and function in the vertebrate respiratory system: A tribute to August Krogh.

High rates of pulmonary gas exchange require three things: 1) that gases at the contact surface of the lung's capillaries are replenished rapidly from the environment; 2) that this surface is large and thin; 3) that the capillaries are effectively perfused with blood. In spite of this uniform requirement, lungs have evolved complex and highly diverse architectures, but we have a poor understanding of the drivers of this diversity. Here, I briefly discuss some of the diversity in gross anatomical features directing airflow in avian and non-avian reptiles. I also review new insights into the cel

Safety and efficacy of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine (AZD1222) against SARS-CoV-2: an interim analysis of four randomised controlled trials in Brazil, South Africa, and the UK.

BACKGROUND: A safe and efficacious vaccine against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), if deployed with high coverage, could contribute to the control of the COVID-19 pandemic. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of the ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine in a pooled interim analysis of four trials. METHODS: This analysis includes data from four ongoing blinded, randomised, controlled trials done across the UK, Brazil, and South Africa. Participants aged 18 years and older were randomly assigned (1:1) to ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccine or control (meningococcal group A, C, W, and Y con

Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis in Farmers: Improving Etiologic Diagnosis to Optimize Counselling.

In a farmer, a diagnosis of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) might cause drastic changes in life, and guidance concerning future prospects within farming requires a best possible etiological diagnosis. We aimed to assess (1) if immunological analyses based on material samples from the work environment could be used to improve the etiologic diagnosis in a farmer suffering from HP, and (2) if combining a longitudinal immunological investigation of workplace material with a realistic work place inhalation challenge could be used to optimize counselling with respect to further employment within f

[A case of farmer's lung associated with allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis].

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis are two forms of lung disease with presumed distinct immunoallergic mechanisms. We report the observation of a 38-year-old French farmer who, for one month, had fever and dyspnoea resistant to antibiotic therapy. A diagnosis of farmer's lung, and allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis was made on clinical, biological, functional and radiological evidence and according to the criteria established. The evolution was favorable with antigenic eviction and corticosteroid therapy. This observation is to our knowledge the 5th c

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis: A new strategy for serodiagnosis and environmental surveys.

We propose a strategy for serodiagnosis of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP): 1) question patients about their private or occupational activity, or visit him on site; 2) select panels of six somatic specific antigens appropriate for each type of exposure; 3) and use ELISA to test concomitantly two recombinant antigens highly specific to Farmer's lung, Metalworking-fluid HP, and for Bird fancier's lung. The serodiagnosis provides an immunological argument that may complete radiological, functional lung exploration and clinical features; 4) If the serodiagnosis is negative but the suspicion of H

Mapping Cancer incidence across Western Victoria: the association with age, accessibility, and socioeconomic status among men and women.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a leading burden of disease in Australia and worldwide, with incidence rates varying with age, sex and geographic location. As part of the Ageing, Chronic Disease and Injury study, we aimed to map the incidence rates of primary cancer diagnoses across western Victoria and investigate the association of age, accessibility/remoteness index of Australia (ARIA) and area-level socioeconomic status (SES) with cancer incidence. METHODS: Data on cancer incidence in the study region were extracted from the Victorian Cancer Registry (VCR) for men and women aged 40+ years during 20

Simultaneous Hydatid Cyst of the Liver and Left Iliac Fossa: An Unusual Case Report.

Hydatid disease is a significant health problem in many livestock-rearing areas especially in the developing world, mainly caused by Echinococcus granulosus. The liver and lung are the most common affected sites. However, hydatid disease can occur anywhere in the body. Simultaneous involvement of two organs or sites is very unusual, mainly for organs other than the lung and liver. We thus report a very unusual combination of hepatic and left iliac fossa with hydatid disease in an adult patient. A 37-year-old farmer from a village presented with intermittent right upper quadrant and left iliac

Global, Regional, and National Cancer Incidence, Mortality, Years of Life Lost, Years Lived With Disability, and Disability-Adjusted Life-Years for 29 Cancer Groups, 1990 to 2017: A Systematic Analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study.

IMPORTANCE: Cancer and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are now widely recognized as a threat to global development. The latest United Nations high-level meeting on NCDs reaffirmed this observation and also highlighted the slow progress in meeting the 2011 Political Declaration on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable Diseases and the third Sustainable Development Goal. Lack of situational analyses, priority setting, and budgeting have been identified as major obstacles in achieving these goals. All of these have in common that they require information on the local cancer epidemio

The Genus Wallemia-From Contamination of Food to Health Threat.

The fungal genus Wallemia of the order Wallemiales (Wallemiomycotina, Basidiomycota) comprises the most xerotolerant, xerophilic and also halophilic species worldwide. Wallemia spp. are found in various osmotically challenged environments, such as dry, salted, or highly sugared foods, dry feed, hypersaline waters of solar salterns, salt crystals, indoor and outdoor air, and agriculture aerosols. Recently, eight species were recognized for the genus Wallemia, among which four are commonly associated with foods: W. sebi, W. mellicola, W. muriae and W. ichthyophaga. To date, only strains of W. se

Toll-Like Receptor-4 Disruption Suppresses Adipose Tissue Remodeling and Increases Survival in Cancer Cachexia Syndrome.

Cancer-induced cachexia, characterized by systemic inflammation, body weight loss, adipose tissue (AT) remodeling and muscle wasting, is a malignant metabolic syndrome with undefined etiology. Here, we show that both genetic ablation and pharmacological inhibition of TLR4 were able to attenuate the main clinical markers of cachexia in mice bearing Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC). AT remodelling was not found in LLC tumor-bearing (TB) TLR4-/- mice due to reduced macrophage infiltration and adipocyte atrophy. TLR4-/- mice were also resistant to cold-induced browning of subcutaneous AT (scAT). Importa

Current evidence for spinal X-ray use in the chiropractic profession: a narrative review.

Circadian rhythm disruption (CRD) is highly prevalent in modern society and contributes to numerous disorders, including erectile dysfunction (ED). Melatonin (MT) possesses well‑established functions in regulating circadian rhythm and demonstrating antioxidant ability; however, whether MT could preserve CRD‑induced ED and the underlying mechanism has never been reported. A rat model with CRD‑induced ED was designed by changing light‑dark cycle (2h:2h alteration) and then intraperitoneally administering MT with low (5 mg/kg/day) and high (10 mg/kg/day) dosages. A total of 4 weeks later, rats' e

Quercetin delays postovulatory aging of mouse oocytes by regulating SIRT expression and MPF activity.

Farmer's lung disease (FLD) is common in eastern France. It is the main form of occupational hypersensitivity pneumonitis, caused by chronic inhalation of microorganisms (antigens) from mouldy hay, straw, or grain. The purpose of this study was to assess, with a panel of data collected between 1997-2003, environmental factors and agricultural practices that independently modify concentrations in hay of microorganisms potentially responsible for FLD. A total of 629 hay samples from 86 farms were included in statistical analyses using linear multilevel regression models allowing to consider the

Mold and Human Health: a Reality Check.

There are possibly millions of mold species on earth. The vast majority of these mold spores live in harmony with humans, rarely causing disease. The rare species that does cause disease does so by triggering allergies or asthma, or may be involved in hypersensitivity diseases such as allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis or allergic fungal sinusitis. Other hypersensitivity diseases include those related to occupational or domiciliary exposures to certain mold species, as in the case of Pigeon Breeder's disease, Farmer's lung, or humidifier fever. The final proven category of fungal diseases

Emphysema in active farmer's lung disease.

BACKGROUND: Farmer's lung (FL) is a common type of hypersensitivity pneumonitis. It is often considered that fibrosis is the most frequent finding in chronic FL. Nevertheless, three cohort studies have suggested that some patients with chronic FL may develop emphysema. We aimed to evaluate the current prevalence of emphysema in active FL, to describe the radiological and functional features of emphysema in active FL, and to identify risk factors associated with emphysema in this population. METHODS: Patients aged over 18 years with active FL were prospectively recruited through the SOPHIA stu

Proximity to agricultural fields as proxy for environmental exposure to pesticides among children: The PIAMA birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Agricultural pesticides are frequently used for crop protection. Residents living in close proximity to treated fields may be exposed to these pesticides. There is some indication that children living near agricultural fields have an increased risk of developing asthma and decreased lung function. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the proximity of participants' homes to fields likely treated with pesticides as proxy for environmental exposure to agricultural pesticides among participants of a Dutch birth cohort study, and to combine acreage of fields with farmer-repo

Effect of Intensive Blood-Pressure Treatment on Patient-Reported Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The previously published results of the Systolic Blood Pressure Intervention Trial showed that among participants with hypertension and an increased cardiovascular risk, but without diabetes, the rates of cardiovascular events were lower among those who were assigned to a target systolic blood pressure of less than 120 mm Hg (intensive treatment) than among those who were assigned to a target of less than 140 mm Hg (standard treatment). Whether such intensive treatment affected patient-reported outcomes was uncertain; those results from the trial are reported here. METHODS: We ran
