OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube placement on gastric emptying in clinically normal cats.
ANIMALS: 8 healthy adult 3- to 5-year-old cats.
PROCEDURE: Cats were accommodated to the diet for 2 weeks prior to scintigraphy. Caloric needs were divided into 3 feedings/d. Food was withheld for 24 hours after tube placement, then was fed as a third of the caloric needs on day 1, two-thirds on day 2, and full caloric requirements thereafter. HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: Abdominal pain developed after a bulimic binge in a 19-year-old girl with anorexia nervosa. She had unsuccessfully tried to induce vomiting. Physical examination showed no clinical sign of peritonitis, although there was diffuse abdominal tenderness on pressure.
INVESTIGATIONS: There was leukopenia (2200 G/l) and a raised serum lactate level (58 mg/dl). No free air was seen on a plain film of the abdomen. Abdominal sonography revealed little free fluid subhepatically.

We describe the development of temporal lobe epilepsy in an 84-year-old man who had suffered domoic acid intoxication. Following intoxication he had nausea, vomiting, confusion, and coma. Generalized convulsions and complex partial status epilepticus progressively developed. After 3 weeks he improved and was seizure free with severe residual memory deficit. Electroencephalograms initially showed periodic epileptiform discharges, later evolving to epileptic abnormalities over frontotemporal regions with diffuse slow waves. Eight months after the intoxication the electroencephalogram was normal.

BACKGROUND: We observed an unexpectedly high incidence of postoperative gastroparesis among lung and heart-lung transplant recipients.
PURPOSE: To identify the incidence of GI complications and to describe the clinical profiles of patients who developed symptomatic gastroparesis after lung transplantation.

This study describes a sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) using rabbit anti-bovine alpha S1-casein antibody for the detection of commercial milk and milk-containing vomit. The antibody does not react with other human body fluids such as breast milk. The stability of alpha S1-casein antigenic activity was examined after storage at different temperatures and enzyme digestion. Some elderly patients with chronic illness such as stroke, or Parkinsonism cannot take food orally because of dysphagia. In such cases, tube feeding can be used as a supplement to oral intake when malnutrition is present. This route allows for easier nursing care and decreases the frequency of aspiration pneumonia. Idiopathic hepatic lipidosis was diagnosed in 11 cats. Cats were treated by delivery of balanced nutrients supplemented with L-carnitine via a surgically placed gastrostomy tube. Forty infants undergoing inguinal hernia repair were divided equally into two groups. After adequate recovery from anesthesia, one group was given an initial feeding of 5% dextrose in water while the other received 15% milk formula (5 mL/kg in each case).
