A model is developed of disease initiation and progression for asbestos related plaque deposition and mesothelioma based on prior models of wound healing and asbestos transport. The model includes short term processes such as macrophage polarization and immune system response, extending the time frame to that of detectable disease. Model results were in a biologically reasonable range. Cancer development and plaque deposition are shown to be dependent on total exposure (intensity * duration). Forensic autopsies provide direct evidence of asbestos exposure and can clarify - but not determine - legal causation. A man in his 60s with asbestos exposure and pleural plaques was incidentally found to have a chest wall mass on computed tomography (CT). Positron emission tomography/CT (PET/CT) demonstrated intense 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake, raising concern for malignancy, including malignant pleural mesothelioma. INTRODUCTION: Although many Spanish workers have been exposed to asbestos, asbestos-related diseases (ARD) have not been widely reported in this country. The aim of the present study was to analyze the data recorded in the Spanish Registry of asbestos-derived diseases.
METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted based on data reported between September 19, 2018, and May 15, 2023, covering 11 Spanish autonomous communities. Variables included demographic data, type of exposure, symptoms, pulmonary function tests, radiological studies, and initial and follow-up diagnoses.

Pleural plaques are the most common manifestation of asbestos-related pleural disease and function primarily as markers of prior exposure rather than as direct causes of clinically significant symptoms, often appearing several decades after initial contact. In South Africa, there is widespread contamination of the environment due to historical asbestos mining operations that were poorly regulated. Although the law makes provision for the compensation of occupationally acquired ARDs, compensation for environmentally acquired ARDs is only available through the Asbestos Relief Trust (ART) and Kgalagadi Relief Trust, both of which are administered by the ART.
