Sarcopenia in systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease: A cross-sectional radiological and functional assessment.

Systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD) is a significant complication that impairs lung function and increases morbidity. Sarcopenia, characterized by the loss of muscle mass and function, is commonly found in chronic diseases such as systemic sclerosis. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of sarcopenia in patients with SSc-ILD and investigate its cross-sectional associations with pulmonary function test parameters, estimated pulmonary artery pressure and quantitative radiological lung involvement. In this cross-sectional study conducted between 2024 and 2025,

Life-threatening diffuse alveolar hemorrhage associated with Rhinovirus infection and the potential role of corticosteroids in immunocompetent patients: Case reports.

RATIONALE: Diffuse alveolar hemorrhage (DAH) is a rare but potentially fatal condition characterized by bleeding into alveolar spaces, most often associated with autoimmune disease or severe infection. Rhinovirus is a common cause of upper respiratory tract infection but is rarely associated with DAH in immunocompetent individuals. We report 2 cases of life-threatening DAH associated with rhinovirus infection, both presenting with severe hypoxemia and showing marked improvement following corticosteroid therapy. PATIENT CONCERNS: Case 1: An 85-year-old woman presented with massive hemoptysis,

Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex Lineage 8 causes drug resistant pulmonary tuberculosis also in South Kivu, Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: Lineage 8 (L8) occupies a unique phylogenetic position as a sister clade to all other known Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) lineages. Although the initial identification of L8 strains was limited to Rwanda and Uganda, the complete geographical distribution of this lineage remains undetermined due to limited genomic surveillance across eastern and central Africa. METHODS: We performed whole genome sequencing (WGS) on MTBC isolates from rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (TB) patients' sputum in Bukavu, South Kivu province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Lineag

Potential association between dementia polygenic risk scores and subjective cognitive burden in a post-COVID cohort: a hypothesis-generating study.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may be associated with persistent subjective cognitive complaints, including difficulties with attention, memory, and executive function, in some individuals with post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC, "long COVID"). Inter-individual variability raises the possibility that host genetic factors contribute to susceptibility. This study explored the relationship between dementia-related polygenic risk scores (PRS) and subjective cognitive burden after COVID-19. METHODS: Genome-wide genotype data from 60 individuals with a history of COV

CFTR I556V Variant Exacerbates Cigarette Smoke-Induced Airway Inflammation in COPD by Promoting NLRP3 Inflammasome Activation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene are known to cause cystic fibrosis (CF), a condition that shares several pathophysiological pulmonary features with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Despite these similarities, the relationship between CFTR gene mutations and the risk of developing COPD remains unclear and poorly understood. METHODS: We employed exon sequencing to detect CFTR exon variations in 208 COPD patients and 100 control subjects with normal lung function. Subsequently, we applied the adenine base edi

Multi-omics integration reveals vaccine-specific molecular signatures and temporal dynamics of COVID-19 immune responses.

Vaccination elicits systemic immune responses that extend beyond antibody and lymphocyte activation, engaging coordinated metabolic and lipid pathways that modulate immune function. Nevertheless, how systemic molecular responses differ across COVID-19 vaccine platforms, including closely related mRNA platforms, remains poorly understood. Here, we performed integrated plasma proteomic, lipidomic, and metabolomic profiling of 53 SARS-CoV-2-naïve adults vaccinated with Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines. Samples were analysed across multiple timepoints using differential a

Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza H5N1 in Missouri: Current Situation and Pandemic Potential.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1, which has caused severe disease in poultry since 1996, has become panzootic in wild birds and recently has spread to dairy cattle and other mammalian species in the United States. Although few human cases have been reported, devastating HPAI H5N1 poultry outbreaks and massive dieoffs in wild birds and in some mammals raise concern about pandemic potential. Surveillance, early detection, public health interventions, farm biosecurity measures, and next-generation vaccines may reduce the risk of a future HPAI H5N1 pandemic.

Structural determinants of communicable disease risk in asylum reception centres.

INTRODUCTION: With over 120 million people forcibly displaced globally, asylum reception systems represent critical epidemiological interfaces. This synthesis is not confined to a single geographic region: evidence was drawn from reception systems across high-income host countries in Europe and, where available, comparable settings elsewhere, reflecting the substantial heterogeneity of reception models worldwide. Within a One Health framework, these socio-spatial environments shape communicable disease dynamics through accommodation density, sanitation capacity, and governance continuity. ARE

The socioeconomic value of adult respiratory vaccination in Australia: a benefit-cost analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal disease, respiratory syncytial virus, influenza and COVID-19 cause a major burden of illness and death among adults, much of which is vaccine-preventable. We estimated the societal value of adult vaccination against these four pathogens in Australia. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We developed disease-specific static life table cohort models and conducted a societal-perspective benefit-cost analysis of adult respiratory vaccination, approximating those recommended by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunization, relative to no vaccination. Mortality risk redu

Comparable Norovirus Shedding in Symptomatic and Asymptomatic Individuals: A Hospital-Based Study in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: The frequent detection of norovirus in the stool of healthy people may be due to prolonged norovirus shedding after recovery from illness or asymptomatic infections. We describe norovirus shedding patterns in symptomatic and asymptomatic persons in Bangladesh. METHOD: We enrolled acute gastroenteritis (AGE) cases and non-AGE controls from 2 hospitals from January to September, 2023. Fecal samples were tested for norovirus by rapid antigen testing and confirmed by real-time reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Positive persons were retested at day

A multimodal in situ framework for spatial characterization applied on SARS-CoV-2 live-attenuated vaccines in the nasal mucosa.

Respiratory viruses frequently initiate infection in the nasal mucosa, where virus-host interactions shape disease progression and transmission. Yet this site remains undercharacterized due to anatomical and technical challenges. Spatially resolved technologies are limited by cost and complexity, leaving most studies reliant on bulk or descriptive approaches lacking spatial context. We present a framework for spatially resolved investigation of infections in the nasal cavity. Using wild-type SARS-CoV-2 and two live-attenuated vaccines (OTS-206, OTS-228) as model viruses in Syrian hamsters, we

Age-Period-Cohort Analysis of the Global Death Burden of Main Diseases Attributable to High Temperature in the Past 30 Years: Based on the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

High temperatures pose a serious threat to human health. Quantifying the main disease death burden attributable to high temperatures can provide scientific evidence for policy development. Using Global Burden of Disease 2021 data, we identified the death burden attributable to high temperatures across all causes and determined the three leading causes. For each, we used age-standardized mortality rates attributable to high temperature (HA-ASMR) and estimated temporal trends via age-period-cohort modeling at global, regional, and national levels (1990-2021). Ischemic heart disease, stroke, and

Environmental persistence and control of the nasopulmonary mite Halarachne halichoeri: Implications for sea otter rehabilitation.

Nasopulmonary mite infestations are increasingly recognized as a potential contributor to respiratory disease and secondary infections in southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis), yet the environmental persistence and control of these parasites remain poorly understood. We conducted controlled in vitro time-to-event survival experiments to evaluate the persistence of larval Halarachne halichoeri under varying environmental conditions and the efficacy of disinfectants and alternative treatments relevant to marine mammal rehabilitation facilities. We also evaluated the in vitro acaricidal eff

[Research progress and vaccination strategies of respiratory syncytial virus vaccines for pregnant women].

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a predominant global pathogen responsible for severe lower respiratory tract infections and hospitalizations in infants, especially those aged under six months. To date, no vaccines have been approved for active immunization against RSV in infant populations, leaving monoclonal antibodies as the primary modality for immediate, direct RSV protection. Maternal vaccination during pregnancy has evolved as a critical passive immunization approach, wherein vaccine-elicited maternal antibodies cross the placenta to confer early-life protection on neonates and youn

TasTY: Development and evaluation of a taste test for quantifying taste sensitivity among preschool children-test-retest reliability, application, and comparison between children with and without prior SARS-CoV-2 infection.

UNLABELLED: Taste dysfunction gained attention during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic; however, validated objective tests for preschool children remain limited. We aimed to develop a feasible, reliable test quantifying taste sensitivity among children aged 3-6 years and to compare performance between children with and without prior SARS-CoV-2 infection. We included 68 symptom-free children (median age 5.1 years; interquartile range (IQR) 3.9-5.9): 36 without known SARS-CoV-2 infection (control group, CG) and 32 with confirmed prior infection (SARS-CoV-2 infection group, C19-G)

Invasive Infections Caused by Streptococcus pseudoporcinus: A Two-Case Series and Review of the Literature.

Streptococcus pseudoporcinus (S. pseudoporcinus) is a beta-hemolytic, Gram-positive, catalase-negative, nonmotile coccus that primarily colonizes the female genitourinary tract. Although it has historically been considered a colonizing organism, it has increasingly been associated with invasive infections. Its identification may be challenging because of its phenotypic similarity to other beta-hemolytic streptococci. We report two invasive infections caused by S. pseudoporcinus. The first occurred in a 59-year-old woman with cirrhosis who developed spontaneous bacterial peritonitis in the sett

Pediatric RSV-associated lower respiratory tract infection burden in G20 countries in 2023.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of childhood lower respiratory infections, but updated G20 burden estimates are lacking. Using the Global Burden of Disease 2023 database, we analyzed deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) for RSV-associated lower respiratory infections in children aged 0-14 years across G20 members from 1990 to 2023, with stratification by sex, age, and country. In 2023, an estimated 5,373 deaths and 483,162 DALYs occurred, with mortality and DALY rates having declined by ∼5.5% annually since 1990. The COVID-19 pandemic drove burden to a histori
