Imported mosquito-borne infectious diseases in travellers and migrants: Global patterns, clinical overlap, and prevention gaps-an umbrella review of 21 systematic reviews.

BACKGROUND: Imported mosquito-borne infectious diseases (MBIDs) pose public health challenges in nonendemic regions, but cross-disease evidence remains fragmented. We conducted an umbrella review of systematic reviews to identify gaps and inform clinical practice and research priorities. METHODS: Five databases (PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library) were searched from inception to December 3, 2025, for systematic reviews on nine imported MBIDs, including chikungunya, dengue, Rift Valley fever, yellow fever, Zika, lymphatic filariasis, malaria, Japanese encephalitis

Unveiling the antiviral mechanism of A4S7: a synthetic antimicrobial peptide targeting dengue and other mosquito-borne enveloped virus infections.

Dengue virus (DENV), an enveloped mosquito-borne flavivirus, is the causative agent of dengue and prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions. Severe cases can progress to dengue hemorrhagic fever or shock syndrome, posing significant public health challenges. In the absence of specific antiviral drugs, antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have emerged as promising therapeutic agents against DENV due to their broad-spectrum antibacterial and antiviral properties. This study investigated the synthetic AMP A4S7, which effectively inhibited DENV-2 RNA and protein expression and reduced viral progeny p

Lack of evidence for arthropod or vertical transmission of Hepacivirus bovis in a persistently infected dairy herd.

Hepacivirus bovis (BovHepV) has been detected globally since its initial description in 2015, but its transmission routes remain largely unknown. Arthropod-borne or vertical transmission is a common route for several livestock viruses, including Rift Valley fever virus and bluetongue virus. Moreover, many members of the genus Orthoflavivirus (family Flaviviridae) are transmitted by hematophagous arthropods, raising the possibility that hepaciviruses such as BovHepV, which also belongs to the Flaviviridae family, could share similar transmission routes. In this study, we examined possible trans

Longitudinal dynamics and lineage cross-reactivity of the human antibody response to West Nile virus.

West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging/re-emerging flavivirus representing one of the major global causes of mosquito-borne encephalitis, yet no approved therapeutics or vaccines currently exist. To characterize the kinetics of WNV-specific immunity, we evaluated the humoral response in a longitudinal cohort of 55 WNV lineage 1-infected blood donors up to 1 year. We demonstrate that WNV infection elicits robust and durable binding and neutralizing antibodies. Using a biphasic decay model, we estimated the half-life of neutralizing antibodies to be 37 days during the rapid decay phase and 472 day

Genetic diversity of West Nile virus lineage 2a circulating in Culex pipiens vector populations from Bucharest city during the 2024 and 2025 transmission seasons.

BACKGROUND: West Nile virus (WNV) is an emerging pathogen in Europe with an unprecedented northward expansion. In Romania, the virus has been endemic for at least three decades, and human infection cases are registered yearly, sometimes culminating in outbreak events. Bucharest, the capital city of Romania, is the largest urban area of the country, encompasses a multitude of mosquito and bird habitats, and has been continuously reported as an active hotspot for WNV transmission. The circulation of lineage 2 has been documented in Bucharest since 2010 in mosquito and human populations. Our stud

Climate-informed surveillance for climate-sensitive infectious diseases in Somalia: early warning systems, policy gaps, and preparedness priorities.

Climate variability is reshaping infectious disease risk through ecological, environmental, social, and health-system pathways. However, its operational implications remain insufficiently defined in fragile and conflict-affected settings. Somalia is a critical case because recurrent droughts and floods intersect with displacement, food insecurity, weak water and sanitation infrastructure, disrupted immunisation, livestock dependence, and constrained health-system capacity. This narrative review synthesises evidence on climate-sensitive infectious disease risks in Somalia, examines existing sur

Isolation and molecular characterization of West Nile Virus with evidence of vertical transmission in the Coastal region, Kenya.

West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus of global public health importance, maintained in an enzootic cycle between birds and mosquitoes, with humans and other mammals as incidental hosts. Although WNV has been documented in Kenya, surveillance remains inconsistent, geographically fragmented, and largely dependent on serological methods. This limits understanding of circulating lineages, vector diversity, and transmission dynamics, particularly in coastal regions. This study aimed to address these gaps through systematic arboviral surveillance of mosquito populations across four e

Role of Cellular Mechanisms in Dengue Pathogenesis: Focus on Immune Cells Interactions.

Dengue is an arbovirus mosquito-borne disease that occurs after an infection with dengue virus. Dengue virus releases E-proteins, which act as binding proteins and enter the host cell after infection. It triggers several cellular reactions and activates the immune system; however, the mechanisms are still poorly understood. Our goal is to find out how these cellular interactions participate in the activation of immune cells and participate in dengue pathogenesis. Once dengue infects the host cell, it follows these steps: (1) dengue virus releases M- protein into the skin of the host, and it in

In Vivo Risk Assessment of Yellow Fever Virus Transmission Through Breastfeeding, and Mechanistic Insights.

BACKGROUND: Yellow fever virus (YFV), a mosquito-borne orthoflavivirus, remains a significant public health concern, especially in regions with low vaccine coverage. Since 2010, yellow fever vaccination is not recommended for breastfeeding women due to reported cases of vaccine strain transmission through breast milk causing neonatal meningoencephalitis. However, breastfeeding transmission efficiency of the vaccine strains remains unknown, and wild-type strain transmission has been suggested following viral RNA detection in milk. Obtaining direct evidence of breastfeeding-related transmission

Platforms to Evaluate Flavivirus-Induced Immunoinflammatory Responses and Their Pathogenesis.

Mosquito-borne diseases induced by viruses belonging to the Flavivirus genus such as Dengue, Zika, and Yellow fever have proven to cause widespread outbreaks over time. These viruses are prevalent mainly in tropical and subtropical regions and it is estimated that more than 100 countries are affected by one or more of these pathogens. The diseases may have mild clinical manifestations in common, such as fever, joint pain, headaches, and diarrhea; however, they can progress to serious reactions and, sometimes, trigger significant neurological malformations and post-infection sequelae, as in inf

Modulating Chikungunya and Mayaro virus-induced disease severity in mice using low concentrations of anti-IFNAR1 antibodies.

The laboratory mouse (Mus musculus) is the most widely used animal model for preclinical research, with numerous wild-type and genetically modified mouse strains available. Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), a mosquito-borne arthritogenic alphavirus, has emerged in various new regions and caused several millions of cases within the last decade. Mayaro virus (MAYV), an arthritogenic alphaviruses closely related to CHIKV, remains geographically restricted to the Americas. Existing mouse models rely on immunodeficient mice, leading to lethal illness, or footpad injection, which induces localized arthropa

Systematic review of Aedes aegypti control trials suggests publication bias related to author disclosure of conflicts of interest.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti mosquitoes transmit multiple arboviruses, including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever, resulting in a large global disease burden. Vector control remains the key strategy to prevent transmission due to the absence of widely available vaccines or treatments. Many studies evaluate control approaches, yet only a subset are published in peer-reviewed journals. One potential contributor to selective reporting, or publication bias, could be a conflict of interest (COI), defined as employment by a for-profit company conducting the trial, or a financial interest tie

Chikungunya: global epidemiology, clinical spectrum, and vector control-lessons for China from the 2025 Guangdong outbreak.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a re-emerging mosquito-borne virus that has spread from Africa to Asia and the Americas, posing a growing global threat to public health. In China, following the first imported case in 2008 and subsequent local outbreaks, the largest nationwide epidemic occurred in 2025 with nearly 9,000 confirmed cases. Clinically, CHIKV infection is characterized by high fever, rash, and severe arthralgia, often leading to long-term joint pain and reduced quality of life. The virus is primarily transmitted by Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti, with transmission dynamics influenc

Genomic epidemiology of dengue virus 2 and 3 reveals repeated introductions and exportations of several lineages in Colombia.

Dengue fever, a major mosquito-borne viral disease, is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes and poses a significant global health burden. Despite extensive research, the spatiotemporal dynamics of dengue virus (DENV) lineages in Colombia remain understudied. Here, we analyze 11,443 complete genome sequences from Colombia and the Americas to map the genomic epidemiology of DENV-2 and DENV-3. Phylogeographic reconstruction revealed multiple independent introductions and exportations of the DENV-2 II and III lineages, as well as the DENV-3 lineage III_C.2, underscoring Colombia's critical role as both

Development of a PCB-based electrochemical aptasensor for Chikungunya virus protein detection.

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral infection, and its accurate identification is critical to avoid misdiagnosis. Herein, we demonstrate the development of a cost-effective, printed circuit board (PCB)-based biosensor platform to detect the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) E1 protein. A gold-coated PCB sensor that requires only ∼10 µL of sample for analysis was fabricated. To detect the virus protein, an aptamer-based sensing platform was developed. Electrochemical characterization was carried out via square wave voltammetry (SWV). An S-shaped calibration curve was obtained, with a linear response
