Global, regional, and national burden of exposure to chewing tobacco, 1990-2023: a systematic analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to chewing tobacco is a known health risk factor but has received less attention than smoking in global tobacco control efforts. As the evidence base linking chewing tobacco use to poor health grows, it is essential to closely track the changing use of chewing tobacco distinct from other forms of smokeless tobacco, as well as the estimated burden associated with its use. These data are essential to inform policy makers who seek to identify and avert the health burden associated with these dangerous products. METHODS: We estimated the prevalence of chewing tobacco use and

Advances in tuberculosis diagnostics and biomarkers, 2020-26: scientific evidence, recommendations, gaps, and developmental priorities.

Major advances in tuberculosis diagnostics and biomarker research from 2020 to 2025 have informed updated WHO policy guidance, consolidating recommendations for the detection of tuberculosis disease and drug resistance within a single framework. These recommendations align screening, diagnosis, and drug-resistance testing across populations and specimen types. Digital chest radiography, increasingly supported by computer-aided detection, is now a core WHO-recommended screening and triage tool, improving case detection and referral for confirmatory testing at scale. Decentralised molecular diag

Do Temporal Changes in Complete Tooth Loss Point to Cohort Effects?

OBJECTIVES: Complete tooth loss is more common among older adults; however, its prevalence has declined significantly over time. It is currently unknown whether age and period effects act independently or whether they interact to produce differential effects by birth cohorts. This study aimed to examine temporal changes in the prevalence of complete tooth loss in Australia, examine the effects of age, period and cohort and assess life course changes within birth cohorts. METHODS: The study used data from three repeated cross-sectional waves of Australia's National Dental Telephone Interview S

Could Trained Immunity Impact Periapical Healing? A Biological Perspective.

AIM: To explore whether trained immunity, a form of innate immune memory mediated by epigenetic and metabolic reprogramming, may influence periapical healing following root canal treatment. SUMMARY: Apical periodontitis is primarily driven by microbial infection; however, healing outcomes following root canal treatment often demonstrate substantial variability despite comparable microbial reduction and treatment quality. Trained immunity has emerged as a biological phenomenon whereby prior microbial or inflammatory exposure can induce long-term functional reprogramming of innate immune cells,

Endodontic Treatment of Apical Periodontitis Mitigates Systemic Inflammation and Restores the Blood-Brain Barrier Integrity in an In Vitro Model.

AIM: A growing body of research supports an association between periapical inflammation and an increased risk of various systemic effects. However, there is currently no scientific evidence demonstrating a causal relationship between this inflammation and changes in epithelial or endothelial permeability in patients with apical periodontitis (AP). This study aimed to evaluate the potential association between AP, circulating inflammatory cytokines known to affect cellular permeability, and serum proteins associated with an impaired cellular barrier permeability. Additionally, we investigated t

Traumatic Dental Injuries as a Potential Predisposing Factor for Invasive Cervical Resorption: A Systematic Review.

Invasive cervical resorption is a clinically challenging and often silent form of external root resorption that may remain undetected until substantial structural damage has occurred. Although traumatic dental injuries are repeatedly cited as potential predisposing factors, the strength, consistency, and clinical meaning of this association have not been critically established. This systematic review synthesized the available clinical evidence on the relationship between traumatic dental injuries and invasive cervical resorption, with emphasis on trauma history, diagnostic methods, associated

Selective Dual Apical Surgery for Adjacent Immature and Mature Upper Incisors With a Large Periapical Lesion: A 4-Year Follow-Up Case Report.

Conservative dual apical surgery without conventional orthograde root canal treatment, as well as root-end resection/preparation/filing/sealing, can successfully manage large periapical lesions involving adjacent immature and mature teeth. This hypothesis-generating observation suggests bioactive root-end filling may reduce treatment burden in carefully selected cases, but further studies are needed.
