Compendium of continuing education in dentistry (Jamesburg, N.J. : 1995)2026eng
This case report highlights the importance of periodic dental examinations in identifying progressive hypercementosis and its rare complication, root concrescence, which can complicate future dental extractions. Hypercementosis may be idiopathic or secondary to either local factors or systemic disorders. However, evolution to concrescence raises questions about future treatment approaches should the involved teeth become nonrestorable and require extraction. This article presents a case of generalized hypercementosis affecting multiple quadrants with progression. The severe hypercementosis led

BACKGROUND: Hypercementosis is a non-neoplastic condition characterized by excessive cementum deposition along the root surface, resulting in altered apical morphology. Although often asymptomatic and detected incidentally on radiographs, changes in apical contour may influence anatomical complexity in endodontic treatment.
OBJECTIVE: To estimate the pooled prevalence of hypercementosis based on radiographic observational studies and to explore variability according to imaging modality and study characteristics while contextualizing potential implications for endodontic case complexity assess

Fibromatous epulis of periodontal ligament origin (FEPLO), also known as peripheral odontogenic fibroma (POF), is a benign gingival lesion that occurs frequently in dogs. Common use of both names is cumbersome and confusing yet persists due to disagreement regarding pathogenesis. With the objective of clarifying the histogenesis and pathogenesis, 100 canine FEPLO/POF lesions that had been surgically excised en bloc were evaluated histologically to characterize the lesion's relationship to surrounding anatomic structures and to document concurrent pathologies in those tissues. No lesions involv

Dental lesions are often painful and can impair digestive efficiency and fitness in mammals, consequently leading to systemic health complications. Although dental lesions are rarely described in wild herbivores, a high prevalence of incisor abnormalities was detected in wild muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) using mandibles collected by Inuit hunters through the Community-Based Wildlife Health Surveillance program in the Canadian Arctic. Here, we present the first comprehensive examination of incisor dental lesions and developmental anomalies in wild muskoxen. We examined 243 mandibles from harvest

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

BACKGROUND: Equine dental diseases significantly impact a horse's overall health, performance and quality of life. They can result in secondary infections and digestive disturbances, potentially leading to colic. A recently described disease affecting the incisors of horses is equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH). Understanding EOTRH is crucial for early diagnosis, effective management and prevention of its severe consequences.
OBJECTIVES: To determine proteomic differences in incisor cementum in horses with and without clinical EOTRH.
STUDY DESIGN: Comparative a

BACKGROUND: Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is a painful disorder primarily affecting the incisor teeth of horses over 15 years of age. Clinical signs of the disease include prehension problems, halitosis and in severe cases weight loss. The disease predominately affects the reserve crown and presents as a loss of dental tissue and excessive build-up of cementum.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the radiographic scores of horses with EOTRH and age-matched controls and to increase understanding of EOTRH using microCT to compare teeth from horses with EOTRH and age-mat

In this case study, an all-ceramic (Emax) crown and a post and core restoration are used to successfully treat external inflammatory root resorption (EIRR) in a mandibular molar. A 21-year-old male patient was diagnosed with EIRR and hypercementosis after presenting with pain and significant damage to his lower right first molar. The patient chose a post and core restoration over extraction and implant placement due to budgetary constraints. Endodontic retreatment, fiber post cementation, core buildup, and Emax crown placement were all part of the treatment. At the one-year follow-up, the pati

Radiopaque lesions of the mandible are occasional findings in dental radiographs in dogs. The different diagnoses of densely sclerotic lesions in humans include odontoma, idiopathic osteosclerosis, condensing osteitis, hypercementosis, osteoma, osteoblastoma, and oral exostosis. Publications on many of these conditions in dogs are scarce. This clinical report describes three young adult dogs with radiologically and histologically similar radiopaque mandibular lesions that had either displaced or narrowed the mandibular canal. One dog showed symptoms that could have been consistent with neurolo

Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is a widespread dental disease with an unknown aetiology, mainly affecting the incisors and canine teeth of senior horses. Being clinically asymptomatic in early stages but progressively destructive and painful in many cases highlights the need for improvements in early diagnosis of EOTRH. This study describes how clinical and radiological findings correlate with distinguishing EOTRH-specific symptoms from non-specific findings. Clinical and radiographic examinations of the rostral oral cavity were performed in 154 Icelandic hor

Hypercementosis has been previously reported in mice lacking progressive ankylosis protein (Ank KO mice, or Ank, KO - knockout, WT - wildtype) due to decreased levels of the mineralization inhibitor inorganic pyrophosphate. However, the impact of hypercementosis on alveolar bone remodeling and periodontal ligament (PDL) maintenance from orthodontic forces during orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) remains unclear. To investigate the roles of ANK protein on tooth movement, PDL maintenance, alveolar bone remodeling, and tooth root resorption, we performed a split-mouth model of OTM induced by a clo

This study reports a skeletal disorder marked by facial dysmorphism and a distinct oro-dental phenotype including premaxillary and gingival overgrowth and hypercementosis. Whole-exome sequencing identified a homozygous missense variant in ENPP5 (c.173G>T; p.Gly58Val), affecting a conserved glycine residue predicted to be within a putative active binding site of the ENPP5 protein. In mice, RNA-seq and immunofluorescence confirmed Enpp5 expression in functional osteoblasts of the maxilla and mandible, periodontal ligament, odontoblasts, and ameloblasts. RT-qPCR confirmed region-specific expressi

BACKGROUND: The dental syndrome EOTRH is a painful, progressive dental disease with an unknown aetiology. The often painful nature of EOTRH emphasises the need for a better knowledge of the underlying pathogenic mechanism and risk factors. A comparative analysis of haematological, biochemical and endocrine values in EOTRH-affected and non-affected horses has not been described.
OBJECTIVES: To compare haematological, biochemical, and endocrine parameters in EOTRH-affected and non-affected horses to detect risk factors for horses developing EOTRH.
STUDY DESIGN: Cross sectional.

Outside of Iceland, the Icelandic horse is prone to the development of Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis (EOTRH). The aim of this study was to determine the radiographic prevalence and clinical signs of EOTRH in elderly horses (≥15 years) in Iceland. The rostral oral cavity of 170 horses (aged 15-30 years) was examined clinically. In addition, husbandry and nutritional management history was recorded by use of a questionnaire. Radiographs (2-4 views) of 188 horses were evaluated, findings were categorized by numerical staging of the condition and collated with clinical

OBJECTIVE: The frequency of comorbidities in horses with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) in first-opinion practice is unknown. It is hypothesized that horses with PPID would have more frequent medical events and be euthanized at a younger age.
METHODS: This was a case-control retrospective study. Medical records ranging from 1996 to 2024 including 132 horses diagnosed with PPID and 274 controls matched by age and breed were reviewed. Variables associated with PPID were evaluated with a Fisher exact or Mann-Whitney U test followed by conditional logistic regression. Results were r

Mental nerve paresthesia is a serious postoperative complication of mandibular third molar extraction. It appears that no study has examined the relationship between the surface morphology of the mandibular third molar roots and the possibility of mental nerve paresthesia following tooth extraction. Therefore, the root morphology of the mandibular third molars was examined according to age using dental cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), and the possibility of mental nerve paresthesia following tooth extraction was evaluated. The study included 1216 patients who had undergone mandibular thir

The "teeth-as-tools" hypothesis posits that Neanderthals used their anterior teeth as a tool or a third hand for non-dietary purposes. These non- or para-masticatory activities (e.g., tool-making or food preparation prior to ingestion) have also been described in other past and extant human populations, and other Primates. Cementum is the mineralized tissue that covers the tooth root surface and anchors it to the alveolar bone. Under certain conditions (e.g., mechanical stress, infection), its production becomes excessive (i.e., beyond the physiological state) and is called 'hypercementosis'.
