Essential Oil-Containing Mouthrinses for Plaque and Gingivitis Control: Formulation Chemistry, Human Salivary Biomarkers, Mechanistic Evidence, and Research Priorities.

Selected essential oil (EO)-containing mouthrinses improve plaque and gingivitis control when used alongside mechanical oral hygiene, but their molecular effects in human saliva remain poorly defined. This narrative review integrates formulation chemistry, oral exposure, human salivary evidence, and mechanistic studies. Three studies identified in this review evaluated salivary immunoglobulin A, immunoglobulin G, or interleukin-1β. Differences in populations, co-interventions, sampling, and analytical methods limit comparison and do not establish reproducible modulation of a single biomarker.

Targeting of Oral Bacterial Taxa Linked to Disease by Flavonols.

BACKGROUND: Networks of different bacterial taxa contribute to oral health. Antibacterials ideally would selectively modulate the subset of bacteria contributing to disease. Plant-derived natural compounds have been shown to inhibit planktonic bacteria or monospecies oral biofilms. However, very few in vivo studies are available to demonstrate the effects of these antimicrobials against native biofilms found in the human oral cavity. The objective of this study was to test putative antibacterials for their ability to affect specific bacterial taxa in complex biofilms. METHODS: Oral biofilms f

Association between periodontitis and exudative retinal detachment: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: To investigate whether periodontitis, a common bacterial-induced inflammatory condition, serves as a risk factor for exudative retinal detachment (ERD), which results from fluid entering the subretinal space due to damage to the retinal pigment epithelium or leaky intraocular vessels, typically associated with inflammatory, infectious, or retinal diseases. METHODS: Using Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (2000-2020), patients with periodontitis were identified based on at least three outpatient visits within 1 year. A comparison cohort without periodontitis was

Maintenance Adherence, Periodontitis, and Prosthetic Factors in Peri-Implantitis: A Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Implant survival rates are high, yet peri-implantitis and implant failure still compromise long-term treatment success. How maintenance adherence, patient susceptibility, and prosthetic design interact to shape these outcomes in routine practice has not been fully characterized. METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort included 260 patients with 469 implants placed between 2017 and 2023 and followed until June 2026 (median 69.3 months). From documented supportive-care records we classified maintenance adherence as regular (≥ 2 documented visits per year or mean interval ≤

Short sleep duration and incident self-reported severe periodontitis among Japanese adults: a nationwide prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory condition influenced by behavioral, systemic and socioeconomic factors, and its prevalence increases with age. Although cross-sectional studies suggest an association between short sleep duration and periodontitis, longitudinal evidence remains limited. This study aimed to examine the association between sleep duration and self-reported incident severe periodontitis using data from a nationwide prospective cohort. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study using longitudinal data from the 2023-2025 waves of the Japan COVID-19 and Socie

Climate risk or healthcare investment? Explaining oral health outcomes across European Union member states.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change is a major public-health concern, but short-term population-level evidence linking annual climate variability to oral-health outcomes remains limited. This study evaluates within-country associations between temperature, extreme heat days, and three oral-health indicators across EU member states. METHODS: A longitudinal ecological panel analysis was conducted for the 27 EU member states from 2016 to 2023. Daily temperatures at each country centroid were obtained from the Open-Meteo Historical Weather API and aggregated to annual mean temperature and days with maxi

Interspecies regulation of virulence through gingipain inhibition by a Tannerella forsythia serpin.

Periodontitis is driven by dysbiotic microbial communities in which Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) acts as a keystone pathogen through its caspase-like fold (Clan CD) proteases, gingipains. Tannerella forsythia (Tf), another member of the periodontal pathogenic community, uniquely produces the broad-spectrum serpin termed miropin, yet its biological significance as an inhibitor in periodontal inflammation remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that miropin directly inhibits the lysine-specific gingipain Kgp and the calpain-like protease Tpr produced by Pg, forming irreversible covalent inhibitor

Influence of Three-Year Peri-Implant Maintenance Compliance on Clinical and Radiographic Outcomes: A Cross-Sectional Analysis of Peri-Implant Disease Prevalence.

The long-term success of dental implants depends not only on osseointegration but also on maintaining peri-implant tissue health and overall human health and wellbeing. Despite predictable survival rates, peri-implant diseases such as mucositis and peri-implantitis remain prevalent due to poor plaque control, contributing to oral infectious disease and illness. Peri-implant maintenance therapy (PIMT) is essential for disease prevention through regular monitoring and intervention, supporting public health, preventive medicine, and long-term patient wellbeing. The aim of the study was to evaluat

[Development of the autotransplantation technique: from freehand surgery to a digital 3D workflow].

Autotransplantation of teeth is an effective treatment option for tooth replacement, particularly in young patients. Traditionally, the recipient socket is prepared freehand by repeatedly fitting the donor tooth, which may result in prolonged extra-alveolar time and potential damage to the periodontal ligament. With the introduction of cone beam computed tomography imaging, digital planning and 3D printing technology, it has become possible to fabricate a patient-specific replica of the donor tooth. This allows the recipient socket to be prepared accurately, thus limiting intraoperative adjust

Histopathological Insights into Peri-Implant Mucosal Inflammation: Comparative Analysis of Peri-Implant Mucositis and Peri-Implantitis as Distinct Disease Entities with Emphasis on Foreign Body Reactions.

Peri-implant diseases, including peri-implant mucositis and peri-implantitis, constitute significant human health challenges that threaten implant longevity despite advances in implant medicine. These inflammatory disease entities compromise peri-implant tissue integrity and oral wellbeing, with growing public health relevance due to the widespread use of dental implants. Increasing evidence implicates tribocorrosion-induced titanium particle release in provoking foreign body-mediated inflammation, facilitating disease progression from a reversible inflammatory illness to an irreversible destr

Rare Feline Gingival Extramedullary Plasmacytoma: Clinical Application of Electrochemotherapy for Local Control.

Feline extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is an uncommon plasma cell neoplasm typically regarded as biologically benign; however, its clinical behaviour may be heterogeneous. This case report describes an aggressive gingival EMP in a 14-year-old neutered male Turkish Angora cat, characterised by alveolar bone lysis and cytologically confirmed regional lymph node metastasis in the absence of systemic features consistent with multiple myeloma. Histopathological examination revealed an infiltrative round cell neoplasm with high mitotic index, and strong diffuse MUM-1 immunoreactivity confirmed the

Mechanisms of inflammatory cell activation in periodontitis-induced bone destruction and advances in targeted interventions.

Periodontitis is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults, characterized primarily by alveolar bone destruction driven by dysregulated host immune-inflammatory responses. Central to this pathological process is the aberrant activation of inflammatory cells within the periodontal microenvironment. This review comprehensively summarizes the activation phenotypes, functions, and interaction networks of key inflammatory cells including macrophages, neutrophils, T cells, and B cells in periodontitis. It elucidates the molecular and cellular mechanisms by which these activated cells contribute to bon

Immunological cross-talk between periodontitis and systemic lupus erythematosus: the role of T-B cell dysregulation in the shared pathogenic network.

Periodontitis and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) exhibit overlapping immunopathological features characterized by dysregulated adaptive immune responses. Emerging evidence suggests that aberrant T-B cell crosstalk represents a potential immunological link between chronic oral inflammation and systemic autoimmunity. Persistent periodontal inflammation promotes the release of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), leading to dendritic cell activation, neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation, and sustained immune stimulation.
