Association Between Psychosocial Factors and the Need for Orthodontic Treatment Based on Self-Perception.

Introduction: Smile esthetics play a central role in social interaction, self-esteem, and self-confidence, and may influence individuals' perception of orthodontic treatment need. Understanding how patients evaluate their own smile and how this perception relates to treatment demand is increasingly relevant for patient-centered orthodontic care. This study aimed to examine the associations between demographic factors, self-perception of smile esthetics, psychosocial behaviors, and perceived need for orthodontic treatment. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out using a q

Open Bite Classification Using Machine Learning: A Cephalometric Analysis.

Background: Anterior open bite (AOB) is a complex malocclusion characterized by different vertical craniofacial growth and heterogeneous skeletal patterns, making objective diagnosis challenging using conventional cephalometric assessment alone. Recent advances in machine learning offer new opportunities to improve phenotypic characterization and diagnostic accuracy in orthodontics. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed lateral cephalometric records from 1056 orthodontic patients, comprising 621 patients with an anterior open bite and 435 healthy controls, all of whom were from the Arab p

Clinical outcome of maxillary arch expansion with clear aligners in mixed dentition: A systematic review.

Maxillary transverse deficiency, affecting approximately 21% of patients in the mixed dentition stage, represents a common skeletal discrepancy in orthodontics. Clear aligners have demonstrated efficacy in achieving maxillary arch expansion, alleviating crowding, and meeting orthodontic treatment objectives. This review aims to systematically evaluate and synthesize the available evidence on the clinical outcomes of maxillary arch expansion using clear aligners in the mixed dentition period. The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024542510) and the review followed Preferred Reporting It

The influence of oral health on sports performance: an interdisciplinary perspective.

Sports performance is a multifactorial concept determined by the interplay of physical, technical, tactical, and psychological factors. While its measurement is straightforward in metrical sports (e.g., athletics or swimming), it is more complex in team or aesthetic disciplines. In recent years, the role of oral health has gained attention as a potentially modifiable factor influencing athletic performance. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of how sports performance is defined and measured - particularly in explosive and endurance sports - and explores the impact of oral health on p

Strategies for canine cortical bone anchorage in fixed orthodontics with extraction of the first premolars: A case report.

Control of canine torque is critical in extraction-associated orthodontic treatment. This case report describes a 20-year-old female diagnosed with dental Class I malocclusion, accompanied by a high-angle vertical skeletal pattern, lingually inclined maxillary canines, a biprotrusive facial profile, shallow overjet, and deep overbite. Treatment was performed using a multi-bracket fixed appliance. Four premolars were extracted. Crimpable gate springs, TMA archwires, and lingual powerarms were used for resolving cortical anchorage of the maxillary canines, while mini-implants were utilized for v

Dental Effects of Discordant Thumb-Sucking in Monozygotic Twins: A Case Report.

This case study examines the dental effects of a persistent thumb-sucking habit by comparing monozygotic twins-one with the habit and one without. With genetic and environmental variables largely controlled, this model isolates the impact of nonnutritive sucking on occlusal development. Clinical and diagnostic assessments revealed that the twin with the habit exhibited an anterior open bite, increased overjet, narrower maxillary arch width, deeper palatal vault, and altered incisor inclinations. A unilateral right-sided functional shift crossbite was also observed. Molar relationships were sim

Artificial intelligence in treatment prediction for skeletal Class III malocclusion: A systematic review.

In skeletal Class III patients, treatment options range from orthodontics to orthognathic surgery. Choosing the optimal approach requires a comprehensive clinical evaluation, which may be supported by AI tools. The aim of this study was to assess the performance of AI models in predicting the need for orthognathic surgery and in identifying predictors influencing treatment decisions. A PRISMA-guided electronic database search (PubMed, Web of Science; 2009-2024; English/French) was performed to identify studies using machine learning (ML) or deep learning (DL) on cephalometric and clinical data

Molar distalization and stability following maxillary anterior teeth alignment with class II elastics and a 10-day aligner protocol.

This study compares the anticipated maxillary anterior teeth alignment and molar distal movement with the actual results. The molar stability after anterior teeth alignment has also been investigated. The sample consisted of 30 individuals. Three digital models were obtained using an intra-oral scanner before treatment (T0), after maxillary molar distalization (T1), and at the treatment end, before refinement (T2). The digital models were registered over the palatal rugae area. 120 maxillary molars were investigated for distal movement and anchorage loss. Also, 180 upper anterior teeth were ev

[Distalization using retro-tuberosity screws: Presentation of four clinical cases].

INTRODUCTION: To correct bilateral Class II malocclusions or Class II subdivisions, various therapeutic options are available to the orthodontist, depending on the patient and the amount of tooth movement required. Retro-tuberosity screws (RTSs) represent one such alternative; however, they remain poorly documented in the literature. The aim of this article is to present a series of cases managed using RTSs. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Four cases treated with RTSs are presented. DISCUSSION: RTSs enabled effective sequential distalization. Adverse effects were limited, except for the risk of vestib

Protocol for Fabrication and Utilization of a Novel Chairside Technique for Interception of Tongue Thrusting Habit.

UNLABELLED: The importance of early interception of the tongue-thrusting habit need not be overemphasized. Among several habit-breaking appliances, few chairside methods are available among the gamut of habit-breaking appliances available. So, a novel chairside appliance technique was employed with the use of routinely used armamentarium like Begg's bracket, lock pin, and flowable composite. This paper describes the technique and its application alongside rapid maxillary expansion (RME) appliance in a 10-year-old female patient. The chairside technique was found to be simple and acceptable to

Age-dependent saturation of the biological response to different orthodontic forces.

BACKGROUND: In animal studies we have shown that the inflammatory response and rate of tooth movement triggered by orthodontic force reach a saturation point beyond which increased force produces no additional response. In addition, our previous clinical study found that adolescents and adults have different inflammatory response, tooth movement rates, and pain with increasing orthodontic forces. Based on these findings, our goal in this study was two-fold. First, to determine if there is a saturation point for the inflammatory response and tooth movement rates in orthodontics patients. Second
