This study was conducted to evaluate the relationship between temporomandibular joint (TMJ) morphology and condylar histogram data using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in patients with jaw deformities. TMJ disc positions were classified into five types: anterior disc displacement (with [AW] or without [AWO] reduction), anterior, fully covered, and posterior, using MRI. Condylar histogram data were measured preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively. Normalized average condylar histogram data from MRI were compared across skeletal classes and disc positions, and preoperative and postoperative

This study investigated whether preoperative clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics can predict disc repositioning after arthroscopic discopexy for anterior disc displacement in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Data corresponding to 193 TMJs were retrospectively collected from 127 patients who underwent holmium:YAG laser-assisted arthroscopic discopexy at the study hospital between 2022 and 2024. The primary outcome was postoperative disc position as assessed through MRI. Clinical and MRI data were used to develop and validate a nomogram through bootstrap resampling. C

This study sought to assess and compare the clinical efficacy of concentrated growth factor (CGF) and sodium hyaluronate (SH) injections in the management of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA). Furthermore, it examined alterations in the expression levels of inflammatory cytokines within the synovial fluid throughout the treatment process. In this randomized controlled trial, 40 patients with TMJOA were randomly assigned to either the CGF group or the SH group. Clinical outcomes were evaluated and compared at the preoperative baseline, and at 1-month, 3-month, and 6-month follow-up

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders represent chronic degenerative musculoskeletal conditions with a high prevalence in the general population and limited regenerative treatment options. Owing to the insufficient efficacy of current conservative and surgical therapies, there is a growing clinical need for biologically based regenerative approaches. Tissue engineering (TE), particularly scaffold-based strategies, has emerged as a promising avenue for TMJ regeneration. This systematic review analyzed preclinical in vivo studies investigating scaffold-based interventions for TMJ disc and oste

BACKGROUND: The medial pterygoid muscle (MPM) is frequently implicated in pain and dysfunction in patients with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), owing to its functional complexity, susceptibility to overload, and rich neuromuscular control. Paradoxically, in patients rehabilitated with tubero-pterygoid implants, whose apices often penetrate or traverse the MPM attachment, no pain, trismus, or TMD-related symptoms are typically observed.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of implant penetration into the medial pterygoid muscle using CBCT and clinical examination aft

Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA) is a prevalent disorder featuring abnormal occlusion and oxidative stress (OS) as key pathogenic factors. TMJOA progression is accompanied by significant activation of the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. Connexin 43 (Cx43), which shapes a dynamic protein network central to OA pathogenesis, may interact with Wnt pathway members within a complex regulatory framework. However, the changes in Cx43 expression in condylar cartilage under OS, along with the crosstalk between Cx43 and Wnt pathway members in the context of TMJOA, remain poorly understood.

PURPOSE: Biomechanical parameters of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), such as joint contact forces and intra-articular stresses, are suggested to contribute to the development of temporomandibular joint disorders, but are impractical to measure. In this study, we present a computational framework for evaluating these parameters by integrating a function assessment system and a patient-specific modeling approach.
METHODS: The pipeline consists of acquiring patients' functional and morphological data and developing combined multibody dynamics and finite-element (MBD-FE) models for simulating

BACKGROUND: Areca nut (AN) is a commonly consumed psychoactive substance, especially in South and Southeast Asia. Chronic chewing of AN has been linked to multiple health problems, including temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Excessive strain on TMJ during chronic AN chewing can lead to repetitive injury, resulting in microtrauma and macrotrauma to both the TMJ and the surrounding masticatory structures. Previous studies have reported the long-term impact of AN chewing on TMJ by using conventional 2D imaging.
