Dentofacial Orthopaedics in Cleft Lip and Palate: A Comprehensive Review.

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is a congenital craniofacial anomaly characterised by disruption of the maxilla's form and growth, which involves both a defect in the bony structure and soft tissue that needs multidisciplinary rehabilitation. Dentofacial orthopaedic procedures are extraoral and intraoral forces used to move bone segments and shape and mould future development of the maxillofacial region from the neonatal stage to skeletal maturity. This narrative review summarises current orthopaedic techniques that are used before primary surgery, such as passive maxillary plates, active pin-retai

Prevalence and Associated Factors of Specific Dentofacial Characteristics in Saudi Populations: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Dentofacial characteristics, including malocclusion and dental anomalies, are a public health concern in Saudi Arabia. Numerous primary studies have been conducted across the Kingdom, but data remains fragmented. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize the prevalence of specific dentofacial characteristics, including malocclusion traits and dental anomalies, and evaluate their associated factors within the Saudi population. A search of electronic databases was conducted to identify cross-sectional studies published up to 2025. Studies reporting the prevalence of malocclusi

Post-treatment Stability of Maxillary Arch Dimensions in Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate: A Systematic Review.

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) are structural anomalies resulting from the failure of craniofacial prominences to fuse during embryonic development. Orthodontic treatment seeks to address these conditions by improving dentofacial balance and restoring oral function, but long-term post-treatment stability continues to pose a challenge. This systematic review included a literature search of four electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Cochrane CENTRAL) to identify observational evidence on the stability of orthodontic treatment in CLP. Six studies, comprising three cohort studies a

Effect of tooth agenesis on facial soft tissue profile.

This study examined the influence of tooth agenesis on the soft tissue facial profile in modern humans. The sample included 799 individuals, comprising 486 with tooth agenesis (mean = 2.5 missing teeth) and 313 controls without agenesis, including third molars. Soft tissue profile shape was quantified on pre-orthodontic lateral cephalometric radiographs using two curves and 36 fixed and sliding semi-landmarks. Shape configurations were processed through Procrustes superimposition and principal component analysis, and the resulting principal components were entered as dependent variables in sex

Ultra-low-dose cone-beam CT for cleft and craniofacial deformity surgery: radiation reduction and clinical applicability.

BACKGROUND: Patients with cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial deformities often require repeated imaging during growth, making radiation reduction a priority. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) offers lower radiation exposure than conventional CT, and ultra-low-dose (ULD) protocols may further reduce dose while maintaining clinical usability for surgical planning. OBJECTIVE: This retrospective cohort study evaluated whether ULD CBCT provides comparable clinical usability to standard-dose CBCT for virtual surgical planning (VSP) and patient-specific implant (PSI) design in children an

CBCT-based assessment of temporomandibular joint morphology in adults with unilateral cleft lip and palate: a comparative study.

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common congenital craniofacial anomalies, affecting essential functions including mastication and speech. Individuals with this condition frequently exhibit altered dentofacial development, which may influence temporomandibular joint (TMJ) morphology. Although temporomandibular disorders have been reported with increased prevalence in this population, comprehensive evaluation of TMJ structural components remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate TMJ morphology in adults with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) using cone-beam computed

Allelic and Genotypic Distribution of rs1801133 in the Methylene Tetrahydrofolate Reductase (MTHFR) Gene Among Family Trios Affected by Nonsyndromic Cleft Lip and Palate.

Cleft lips and/or palates are common congenital anomalies with different prevalence across different populations and geographic regions. The present study analyzed the allelic and genotypic frequencies of the MTHFR rs1801133 polymorphism in familial cleft lip and/or palate trios. This retrospective genetic family-based study was carried out in a population-specific background using samples collected from the data bank of 4,000 patient records from a high-volume craniofacial hospital. Forty familial case-parent trios (n = 120 subjects, 40 unaffected fathers, 40 unaffected mothers, and 40 affect

COVID-19 and Congenital Cleft Lip and Palate: A Systematic Review Focusing on Nonsyndromic Neonatal Outcomes.

Craniofacial anomalies (CFAs), such as cleft lip and palate, are among the most frequent birth defects, often necessitating multidisciplinary care. The COVID-19 pandemic raised concerns that maternal SARS-CoV-2 infection and associated factors, such as fever, inflammation, and psychosocial stress, might elevate teratogenic risk. This systematic review aims to synthesize the evidence on the association between maternal COVID-19 exposure and nonsyndromic CFAs in neonates. We conducted a systematic review in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Major electronic databases (PubMed/MEDLINE, E

Attention to Self-Related Face or Attractive Face? Neural Activation and Oscillation Evidence from Orthognathic Patients.

Attractive faces capture attention. However, the cognitive-behavioral model predicts that individuals with body dysmorphic disorder exhibit a cognitive bias to faces related to their appearance-related self-beliefs. To differentiate between these two mechanisms, we employed electroencephalogram techniques to investigate attentional bias toward faces in orthognathic patients with dento-maxillofacial deformities (DD), who were scheduled to undergo orthognathic surgery to correct these anomalies. We recruited 17 orthognathic patients and 17 controls to complete an oddball task when EEG was record

Multiple Impacted Supernumerary Teeth in a Non-syndromic Class III Malocclusion Patient: A Case Report.

Supernumerary teeth are considered a numerical dental anomaly characterized by an excess of teeth. They may appear as single, double, or, more rarely, multiple teeth and can be associated with various syndromes. A 21-year-old male patient presented to the orthodontic department at the Dental Consultation and Treatment Center in Rabat, Morocco, seeking care for esthetic concerns. Clinical examination revealed a Class III malocclusion with crowding, the absence of tooth 44, and arch asymmetry. Panoramic radiography revealed the impaction of tooth 44 along with five additional supernumerary teeth

Finnish-Enriched SLC26A7 Variant in Congenital Hypothyroidism: Clinical Spectrum, Thyroid Histopathology, and Expression Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Defects in thyroid hormone synthesis at birth lead to congenital hypothyroidism (CH). Recently, pathogenic variants in the SLC26A7 gene have been linked to dyshormonogenetic goitrous CH. This anion transporter is highly expressed in the thyroid and is involved in thyroid hormone synthesis; however, its exact function and cellular localization remain unclear. In this study, we investigated SLC26A7 variants in Finnish patients with CH, characterized the phenotypes, and analyzed thyroid-specific gene expression. METHODS: SLC26A7 variants were identified from a clinical CH cohort (n =

Olfactory disorder after COVID-19 vaccination.

Planning in orthognathic surgery has been and still is an open issue. We have evolved from 2D classical cephalometric hard-tissue planning to 2D soft tissue planning, and finally to 3D and hard and soft tissue evaluation. This, to our knowledge, is the first description of a new Soft Tissue Plane (STP) and its relationship with the anterior position of the upper incisor (UI). Profile photographs of 110 "attractive individuals" with lips at rest or smiling and with upper incisor shown were used. The photographs used were of 65 professional models from two international agencies and 45 individua

[Diagnostic and therapeutic approach to unilateral posterior vertical insufficiency].

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this article is to present the diagnostic and therapeutic approach to unilateral posterior vertical insufficiency. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The authors describe the management protocol. RESULTS: Posterior vertical insufficiency (PVI) manifests clinically as obliquity of the maxillo-mandibular occlusal plane and bicommissural line, and deviation of the chin. Radiographically, PVI is characterized by an elevation of the mandibular angle in relation to the base of the odontoid. Among the etiologies, congenital disorders are the most frequent, dominated by condyle hypoplasi
