Deep neck space Infections in children: Peritonsillar, retropharyngeal, parapharyngeal, and Ludwig's angina emergencies in the pediatric emergency department.

Pediatric deep neck space infections (DNSIs)-peritonsillar, retropharyngeal, and parapharyngeal abscesses and Ludwig's angina-are uncommon but potentially life-threatening due to rapid progression to airway obstruction, sepsis, and mediastinal extension. This narrative review summarizes evidence for emergency clinicians. A literature search of PubMed/Scopus (2000-2025) identified studies on pediatric DNSI epidemiology, imaging, microbiology, and management. DNSIs peak at ages 2-5 years because of prominent retropharyngeal lymph nodes. Nonspecific symptoms (fever, irritability, neck stiffness)

[Lemierre-like syndrome, an emerging diagnosis].

Lemierre's syndrome is characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of the jugular vein, bacteremia, and septic embolisms, resulting from an oropharyngeal infection frequently caused by Fusobacterium. In recent decades, there have been increasing reports of patients with a variant called Lemierre-like syndrome. In these cases, the pathogen involved is Staphylococcus aureus, particularly methicillin-resistant strains. We report the case of a 64-year-old man with no comorbidities who presented with a chin abscess due to facial folliculitis. He progressed with bacteremia, external jugular vein thromb

Clinical characteristics of Parvimonas micra bacteremia in Japan: A single-center case series and literature review.

OBJECTIVES: Gram-positive anaerobic cocci (GPAC) account for 11-15% of anaerobic bacteremia. Parvimonas micra is one of the most commonly identified microorganisms in GPAC bacteremia. This study reviewed the clinical characteristics of P. micra bacteremia. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the records of 35 patients diagnosed with P. micra bacteremia at Hiroshima University Hospital between January 2011 and July 2024 and conducted a literature review, comparing our cases with previous reports. RESULTS: The median patient age was 70 years, and 74% (26/35) were male. All had im

Retropharyngeal and parapharyngeal abscesses in children - a 9.5-year retrospective single-center analysis followed by literature review.

Introduction: Deep neck infections are severe complications of the inflammatory processes in the upper respiratory tract. They can be divided into retropharyngeal, parapharyngeal, peritonsillar, and submandibular abscesses, depending on the affected region. Deep neck infections are considered acute bacterial complications with a progressive course and life-threatening nature, and that is why they require an immediate, broad-spectrum, intravenous antibiotic therapy. Aim: The aim of our retrospective analysis was to characterize the population of children affected by retro- and/or parapharyngeal

Molar Incisor Hypomineralization and Morphological Defects Following Pediatric Septicemia: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Early-childhood septicemia may disrupt odontogenesis, yet documented dental sequelae remain limited. This report outlines the clinical and radiographic features of two pediatric septicemia survivors who later developed molar-incisor hypomineralization (MIH) and morphological tooth defects. METHODS: Two pediatric patients (ages 12 and 6) with documented early-life methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and Neisseria meningitidis were evaluated. Both exhibited MIH, limb amputations, chronic lifelong medical comorbidities, limb amputations, and dental morphological anom

Adult scarlet fever: Case report and epidemiology.

A 30-year-old woman presented to the ED with a generalized rash, fever, and tachycardia. A detailed review of systems and physical examination revealed symptoms and signs of streptococcal pharyngitis. PCR testing confirmed the diagnosis of streptococcal infection and scarlet fever. Scarlet fever is generally a disease of children, but episodic outbreaks are associated with the disease in adults, sometimes with significant complications. It is important for Emergency Medicine clinicians to be aware of this childhood illness presenting in adults.

Unraveling meteorologically influenced recurrence and sequential infection risks among influenza, mumps, scarlet fever, and hand-foot-and-mouth disease: evidence from Shenzhen, China.

BACKGROUND: Meteorological factors are key triggers for infectious diseases in high-density cities, yet their influence on the acute disease patterns of influenza, mumps, scarlet fever, and hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) remains unclear. This study aims to reveal the variations in relative risk and secondary infection associated with meteorological factors, thereby providing clues for further confirmatory research. METHODS: We analyzed city-wide incidence data from 2012 to 2020 alongside daily meteorological observations. Distributed lag non-linear models (DLNM) were used to quantify expo

PLAIN ENGLISH SUMMARY: Outcome domains are aspects of a condition that matter to patients and clinicians and can be measured to assess treatment effects. For tinnitus, examples include 'tinnitus loudness' and 'ability to concentrate'. This study focuses on the first stage of agreeing which outcome domains should be measured in all clinical trials of tinnitus. Crucially, it involves identifying outcome domains, prior to a voting process. This article describes how we effectively involved patients in that study design process, and reflects on the impact of their input. The study first compiled a

Effect of neonatal BCG vaccination on oral herpes in early childhood: A nested study within a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine, primarily used against tuberculosis, has off-target (non-specific) immunomodulatory effects, including potential protection against recurrences of latent herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections. Recurrent episodes of HSV herpes labialis (oral 'cold sores') affect a substantial proportion of the population, including young children, and there is currently no effective preventive intervention. METHODS: This pilot study, nested within the MIS BAIR randomised controlled trial (RCT), explored whether neonatal BCG vaccination, compared with no BCG va

Primary mucocutaneous tuberculosis of the lower lip: an atypical presentation.

Primary mucocutaneous tuberculosis of the lower lip, without pulmonary or systemic involvement, is an uncommon presentation of cutaneous tuberculosis. The rare combination of lower lip swelling, vermilion border beading, gingival hyperplasia and nasal crusting, as seen in our adolescent patient further adds to the atypical nature of the disease while also highlighting diagnostic complexity. We therefore urge dermatologists to keep a high index of clinical suspicion and undertake relevant investigations to actively rule out tuberculosis especially in endemic areas in cases of chronic non-healin

Black hairy tongue: an early adverse effect of linezolid in treatment of multidrug resistant tuberculosis.

A man in his 20s with microbiologically confirmed multidrug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis was initiated on a regimen comprising bedaquiline, pretomanid, linezolid and moxifloxacin. Within 2-3 weeks, he developed altered taste sensation followed by black discolouration of the tongue. In accordance with clinical examination and temporal association linezolid was considered the likely causative agent and was discontinued, while the remaining regimen was continued. The patient was advised on oral hygiene measures with which complete resolution occurred within 8-10 days, with no recurrence on fo

Does Periodontal Disease Influence Tuberculosis Outcomes? Insights from a Scoping Review.

Background: Periodontitis and tuberculosis (TB) are common chronic infections disproportionately affecting disadvantaged groups. They share behavioural, environmental, and immunological risk factors. Emerging evidence suggests a bidirectional relationship, with TB patients often exhibiting poorer periodontal health and periodontal inflammation potentially exacerbating systemic TB. Objective: To comprehensively map and evaluate the existing evidence regarding the association between periodontal disease and TB outcomes, and to explore the potential influence of periodontal status on TB progressi

Understanding histotripsy ablation safety: a systematic review of pre-clinical and clinical adverse events.

BACKGROUND: Facet joint tropism is asymmetry in orientation of the bilateral facets. Some studies have shown that tropism may increase the risk of disc degeneration and herniations, as well as degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS). It remains controversial whether tropism is a pre-existing developmental phenomena or secondary to progressive remodeling of the joint structure due to degenerative changes. As such, the following study addressed the occurrence of tropism of the lower lumbar spine (i.e. L3-S1) in a degenerative spondylolisthesis patient model. METHODS: An international, multi-center

Early-life stress at the time of the plague in Northern Italy (17th century): The case of two individuals with severe hypoplastic defects from Lazzaretto Vecchio (Venice).

OBJECTIVES: This study investigates two cases of severe enamel hypoplasia observed in individuals buried at Lazzaretto Vecchio (Venice, Italy) likely during the 1575-1630 plague outbreak. By integrating histological and geochemical evidence, we assess whether severe hypoplastic defects correspond to alterations in enamel formation dynamics or elemental composition and explore what such patterns may reveal about physiological disruption during crown development. DESIGN: A multi-method approach was applied, including morphological analysis for biological profile reconstruction, enamel histomorp
