Diagnosis of nasopalatine duct and nasopalatine duct cyst in CBCT images: a radiomics-based machine learning approach.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of machine learning (ML) algorithms based on radiomic features extracted from cone-beam CT (CBCT) images in differentiating the nasopalatine duct (NPD) from the nasopalatine duct cyst (NPDC), and to compare their performance with that of a dentomaxillofacial radiologist. METHODS: CBCT scans from 101 histopathologically confirmed NPDC cases and 101 age- and sex-matched controls with normal NPD were retrospectively analysed. Manual segmentation was performed to extract 1037 radiomic features (original, Laplacian of Gaussian, an

Bilateral Nasolabial Cysts Mimicking Inferior Turbinate Hypertrophy in a Patient With Sinonasal Polyposis.

Nasolabial cysts are rare, nonodontogenic cysts of the anterior nasal floor and nasolabial fold. Bilateral presentation is uncommon and may mimic inferior turbinate hypertrophy, leading to misdiagnosis. A 41-year-old Qatari man presented with a five-year history of persistent nasal obstruction, headache, and nasal discharge. He had chronic sinonasal polyposis and a prolonged history of topical nasal decongestant use, with poor response to intranasal steroids. Two CT scans performed three years apart were initially reported as showing sinonasal polyposis; however, retrospective review revealed

Nasolabial Cyst in 36-Year-Old Female: A Case Image of a Rare Non-Odontogenic Lesion.

Nasolabial cysts are rare, benign, non-odontogenic lesions of the facial soft tissue. They typically occur in middle-aged women and present as painless swellings in the nasolabial fold. MRI, CT imaging, and histopathology are essential for confirming diagnosis and assessing extent. Complete surgical excision offers a definitive cure with minimal recurrence.

Clinicopathological features of the nasopalatine duct cyst: A systematic review.

PURPOSE: This systematic review aimed to synthesize the available clinicopathological data on nasopalatine duct cyst (NPDC). METHODS: Electronic searches were performed in seven databases and the grey literature, according to the PRISMA 2020 statement. Risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tool. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. RESULTS: A total of 168 studies comprising 2,734 NPDC cases were included. Most lesions were asymptomatic (n = 358/54.16%) and occurred in males (n = 1641/60.75%), with individuals in the fourth and fifth decade o

Two secondary aneurysmal bone cysts associated with mandibular fibrous dysplasia: a rare case and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is an expansive, destructive, non-odontogenic, and benign bone lesion characterized by spaces filled with blood, typically affecting the elongated bones and spine, with a low incidence in the maxillofacial region. The pathogenesis may occur due to prior or pathological trauma, arteriovenous malformation, secondary association with a pre-existing bone process, such as giant cell tumor, ossifying fibroma, and bone dysplasia, or even genetic alterations. Managing an ABC involves different methods. The preferred treatment is surgical rese

Double-way drainage device for cystic decompression: a technical note.

Decompression is a conservative treatment approach, either definitive or adjuvant, to jaw cysts (of odontogenic and non-odontogenic origin). It relieves intracystic pressure, which allows size decrease of the pathology concomitant to bone neoformation. Several devices have been described with the purpose of decompressing a lesion, which attempted to fulfil ideal characteristics, but many have displayed disadvantages, such as the impossibility of use in edentulous patients, being prone to contamination, clinical discomfort, etc. Thus, the objective of this technical note is to present a new app

Bilateral Nasolabial Cysts: A Rare Clinical Entity.

Nasolabial cysts are rare non-odontogenic, extraosseous cystic lesions that commonly present as unilateral submucosal masses in the nasolabial fold, accounting for 0.7% of all non-odontogenic cysts. These lesions are a form of retention cyst. Bilateral presentations are extremely rare. They are typically slow-growing, painless swellings that cause cosmetic deformity and nasal obstruction. Diagnosis is largely clinical, supplemented by radiological and histopathological evaluation. They are managed surgically. We report a case of a young female who presented with a history of gradual, painless

Clinical evaluation of a novel cotton-like β-tricalcium phosphate, poly-L-lactic acid, and polyglycolic acid bone graft material for jawbone defects following cystectomy.

OBJECTIVES: Jawbone defects following cystectomy for cysts of the jaw may cause postoperative complications such as pathological fractures and secondary infections. Therefore, different bone-grafting procedures have been developed. Novel cotton-like bone graft material composed of β-tricalcium phosphate, poly-L-lactic acid, and polyglycolic acid (β-TCP/PLLA/PGA) has handling properties, three-dimensional shapeability, and bone forming ability, and has potential clinical utility for bone formation. However, no studies have evaluated the clinical outcomes of the novel β-TCP/PLLA/PGA in patients

Pediatric nasopalatine vs. median palatine cysts: differential diagnosis and endoscopic management - a comparative case report.

BACKGROUND: Median palatine cysts (MPCs) and nasopalatine duct cysts (NPDCs) are rare non-odontogenic cystic lesions in the pediatric population. Due to their low incidence and often asymptomatic nature in children, these cysts are frequently overlooked or misdiagnosed. To the best of our knowledge, few comparative pediatric cases have been reported. The novelty lies in the detailed histopathological differentiation and the analysis of their impact on maxillofacial development, providing a crucial clinical reference for early intervention. CASE PRESENTATION: In this report, two pediatric pati

Bilateral nasolabial cysts: MRI findings in a rare case report.

Nasolabial cysts are rare, benign, nonodontogenic, extraosseous maxillofacial lesions, with bilateral involvement being uncommon. A 40-year-old woman presented with long-standing bilateral nasal vestibular swelling. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated well-defined bilateral cystic lesions along the nasal floor with characteristic signal intensities and smooth anterior maxillary bone scalloping, consistent with bilateral nasolabial cysts containing internal debris. This case highlights the characteristic MRI appearance of bilateral nasolabial cysts and emphasizes the role of MRI in ac

Atypical Nasopalatine Duct Cyst in a Grafted Alveolar Cleft: Radiographic Diagnostic Challenges.

Nasopalatine duct cysts may present with atypical radiographic features when arising in grafted alveolar cleft regions. A patient with cleft lip and palate presented with a well-defined radiolucent lesion in the anterior maxilla following alveolar bone grafting. Imaging demonstrated a unilocular lesion associated with displacement of the incisive canal, mimicking other odontogenic and nonodontogenic cysts. The unusual location and surgical history posed diagnostic challenges. Local trauma related to grafting may have contributed to cyst development. Careful radiographic assessment is essential

Epidemiologic and clinicopathologic features of 19,352 jaw cysts: a single-center retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Jaw cysts are a diverse group of intraosseous lesions commonly encountered in oral and maxillofacial pathologies. Several studies have addressed their distribution and clinicopathological features; however, further large-scale analyses using standardized classification systems may enhance cross-regional comparability and diagnostic consistency. We aimed to evaluate the demographic and anatomical characteristics of jaw cysts over an almost 50-year period. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 19,352 histologically confirmed jaw cysts diagnosed between 1975 and 2024. Each case was re

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Cardiovascular disease and microbiome: focus on ischemic stroke.

Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, encompassing conditions such as ischemic heart disease and ischemic stroke (IS), remain the leading global cause of death and disability. While traditional cardiovascular risk factors (eg, hypertension, diabetes, and atherosclerosis) are well established, emerging research underscores the critical role of gut microbiota in the development and progression of both cardiac and cerebrovascular events. The microbiota-gut-brain axis is a bidirectional communication system involving neural, immune, and metabolic pathways that link gut microbial activity to

An unusual presentation of a traumatic bone cyst: a mixed-density variant in the mandibular ramus.

A traumatic bone cyst is a pseudocyst, lacking an epithelial lining, and may contain fluid, connective tissue, or both. The pathogenesis of traumatic bone cyst remains unknown, but the most accepted explanation is the traumatic hemorrhagic theory. A traumatic bone cyst typically presents as a radiolucent lesion. However, it can pose both diagnostic and therapeutic challenges when it manifests as a mixed entity in an unusual location. The present report describes an exceptional case of a mixed-density traumatic bone cyst involving the mandibular ramus and coronoid process of an 18-year-old man.
