An unusual case with a missing parotid gland: A case report.

Unilateral or bilateral agenesis of the parotid gland is an uncommon condition with unclear aetiology. Only 22 cases of unilateral salivary agenesis have been reported excluding the present case. We present a case of a 4-year-old female child who presented with complaints of slight discoloration of her tongue and was referred for MRI to rule out any vascular malformation. Imaging revealed a complete absence of the right parotid gland. Hypertrophy of the sublingual gland and hypoplasia of the parotid gland on the opposite side was also noted, an unusual finding as the contralateral parotid show

Tissue-autonomous immune response regulates stress signaling during hypertrophy.

Postmitotic tissues are incapable of replacing damaged cells through proliferation, but need to rely on buffering mechanisms to prevent tissue disintegration. By constitutively activating the Ras/MAPK-pathway via RasV12-overexpression in the postmitotic salivary glands (SGs) of Drosophila larvae, we overrode the glands adaptability to growth signals and induced hypertrophy. The accompanied loss of tissue integrity, recognition by cellular immunity, and cell death are all buffered by blocking stress signaling through a genuine tissue-autonomous immune response. This novel, spatio-temporally tig

Unilateral Submandibular Gland Aplasia with Ipsilateral Sublingual Ranula - A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Congenital aplasia of major salivary glands is a very rare entity, especially if it concerns an ipsilateral aplasia in a nonsyndromic patient. KEY POINTS FROM THE CASE: The aim of this report is to present a case of an aplasia of the left submandibular gland, which was incidentally diagnosed during presurgical imaging for an ipsilateral sublingual ranula. Histopathological evidence of the lack of sublingual gland tissue in the excised specimen of the ranula is discussed. MAIN LESSONS TO BE LEARNED FROM THIS CASE REPORT: Unilateral submandibular aplasia has unknown etiology. Clini

Heart Dysfunction Following Long-Term Murine Cytomegalovirus Infection: Fibrosis, Hypertrophy, and Tachycardia.

Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is associated with increased risk of chronic diseases of the heart and vasculature, including myocarditis, atherosclerosis, and transplant vasculopathy. To investigate CMV infection of the heart, murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) was used to evaluate both acute and latent infection and the subsequent phenotypic and functional consequences of infection. Female BALB/c mice were intraperitoneally (i.p.) inoculated with 1 × 106 pfu of MCMV and evaluated at 14 and 50 days postinfection (dpi). At each time point, echocardiography was used to evaluate cardiac function and his

The functions and mechanisms of prefoldin complex and prefoldin-subunits.

UNLABELLED: The TAXUSExpress stent contains paclitaxel 1 microg/mm(2). On deployment, paclitaxel is slowly released into the intimal tissue of the coronary artery to prevent cell proliferation and neointimal hyperplasia. When deployed in patients with previously untreated coronary artery lesions, the paclitaxel-eluting stent (PES) effectively reduces the need for revascularization without increasing the risk of in-stent thrombosis. While long-term outcomes data and comparative efficacy and cost-benefit trials versus other drug-eluting stents are required, the PES appears to be an attractive al

Losartan and isoproterenol promote alterations in the local renin-angiotensin system of rat salivary glands.

Renin-angiotensin system (RAS) systemically or locally collaborates with tissue homeostasis, growth and development, which has been extensively studied for its pharmacological implications. This study was primarily aimed at finding and characterizing local RAS in rat parotid, sublingual and submandibular glands. It was also hypothesized that vasoactive drugs could affect the expression of RAS targets, as well as saliva flow and its composition. Therefore, another objective of this study was to compare the effects of losartan (angiotensin II receptor blocker) and isoproterenol (β-adrenergic rec

[A case of hypertrophic pachymeningitis associated with probable sarcoidosis with increased serum IgG4].

We report a 54-year-old man, who presented with an acute onset of diplopia and ptosis on the left side. On admission, neurological examination showed left oculomotor and abducens nerve palsy. Brain MRI showed thickening of the left parieto-temporal dura mater with gadolinium enhancement. Whole-body CT revealed a mass lesion in the right submandibular gland, diffuse goiter, and bilateral hilar lymph node enlargement. Initially, IgG4-related disease was considered because of an elevated serum IgG4 level (240 mg/dl); however, biopsy of the submandibular gland showed non-caseating epithelioid cell

ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profile: Hytrosaviridae.

Hytrosaviridae is a family of large, rod-shaped, enveloped entomopathogenic viruses with dsDNA genomes of 120-190 kbp. Hytrosaviruses (also known as salivary gland hypertrophy viruses) primarily replicate in the salivary glands of adult dipteran flies. Hytrosaviruses infecting the haematophagous tsetse fly and the filth-feeding housefly are assigned to two genera, Glossinavirus and Muscavirus, respectively. Whereas muscavirus infections are only overt, glossinavirus infections can be either covert or overt. Overt infections are characterized by diagnostic salivary gland hypertrophy and cause e

Oral repeated-dose toxicity studies of BIA 10-2474 in Wistar rat.

BIA 10-2474 is a novel fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) inhibitor developed for the treatment of medical conditions which would benefit from enhanced levels of endogenous anandamide (AEA) such as pain disorders. During a Phase I clinical trial one subject died after receiving BIA 10-2474 and four other subjects displayed neurological signs. As part of series of papers presenting all the toxicology data available prior to the clinical trial, we report here the preclinical toxicology studies examining once-a-day oral administration of BIA 10-2474 to male and female Wistar rats. These included a

Lingual salivary gland hypertrophy and decreased acinar density in chagasic patients without megaesophagus.

Although the salivary glands present several functions, there are few studies evaluating these glands in Chagas disease (CD). This study aimed to compare the percentage of collagen, the presence of inflammation, the density of chimase and tryptase mast cells, the area and density of lingual salivary gland acini in autopsied individuals with and without (CD). We analyzed 400 autopsy reports performed in a tertiary public hospital from 1999 to 2015 and selected all the cases in which tongue fragments were collected (27 cases), 12 with chronic CD without megaesophagus (CH) and 15 without CD (non-

Lingual (Not Palatine) Tonsillolith: Case Report.

The lingual tonsil (LT), located at the base of the tongue posterior to the circumvallate papillae, consists of aggregates of lymphoid tissue separated by a median glossoepiglottic ligament that splits the LT into right and left halves. Tonsillar tissue on either side of the ligament exhibits discrete round nodules that project upward. Each prominence is covered by nonkeratinized epithelium and has a central crypt formed by an invagination of the overlying epithelium. Ducts of adjacent mucous glands empty into the crypt, serving as a flushing mechanism to cleanse the crypt. A thin fibrous conn

Assessing the safety of an Ephedrae Herba aqueous extract in rats: A repeat dose toxicity study.

Ephedrae Herba (EH) has been used in Asian traditional herbal medicine to cure bronchial asthma, cold, flu, chills, fever, headache, nasal congestion, and cough. In this study, we evaluated the subchronic toxicity of an Ephedrae Herba aqueous extract (EHAE) in male and female F344 rats. The EHAE was administered orally daily at doses of 0, 125, 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg bw/day for 13 weeks. Toxicological assessment was performed to determine mortality, clinical signs, and changes in body weight, food consumption, ophthalmological, urinary, hematological, and serum biochemical parameters, macros

Susceptibility of Tsetse Species to Glossina pallidipes Salivary Gland Hypertrophy Virus (GpSGHV).

Salivary gland hytrosaviruses (SGHVs, family Hytrosaviridae) are non-occluded dsDNA viruses that are pathogenic to some dipterans. SGHVs primarily replicate in salivary glands (SG), thereby inducing overt salivary gland hypertrophy (SGH) symptoms in their adult hosts. SGHV infection of non-SG tissues results in distinct pathobiologies, including reproductive dysfunctions in tsetse fly, Glossina pallidipes (Diptera: Glossinidae) and house fly. Infection with the G. pallidipes virus (GpSGHV) resulted in the collapse of several laboratory colonies, which hindered the implementation of area wide i

Effect of Diet on Adult House Fly (Diptera: Muscidae) Injected With the Salivary Gland Hypertrophy Virus (MdSGHV).

Research to date on the salivary gland hypertrophy virus (SGHV) in three species of flies has focused on adult flies having access to and taking a proteinaceous diet. Since many studies have shown that diet affects viral infection in numerous organisms, this study examined the effect of a protein-free diet on the effect of the SGHV virus in adult house flies, Musca domestica. L. Adults infected with the virus, and maintained on a sugar diet only, showed salivary glands with a blue rather than a grayish color and mild hypertrophy compared with protein-fed flies. It was possible to retrieve the

Postnatal Exocrine Pancreas Growth by Cellular Hypertrophy Correlates with a Shorter Lifespan in Mammals.

Developmental processes in different mammals are thought to share fundamental cellular mechanisms. We report a dramatic increase in cell size during postnatal pancreas development in rodents, accounting for much of the increase in organ size after birth. Hypertrophy of pancreatic acinar cells involves both higher ploidy and increased biosynthesis per genome copy; is maximal adjacent to islets, suggesting endocrine to exocrine communication; and is partly driven by weaning-related processes. In contrast to the situation in rodents, pancreas cell size in humans remains stable postnatally, indica

Isolation of Mandibular Gland Reservoir Contents from Bornean 'Exploding Ants' (Formicidae) for Volatilome Analysis by GC-MS and MetaboliteDetector.

The aim of this manuscript is to present a protocol describing the metabolomic analysis of Bornean 'exploding ants' belonging to the Colobopsis cylindrica (COCY) group. For this purpose, the model species C. explodens is used. Ants belonging to the minor worker caste possess distinctive hypertrophied mandibular glands (MGs). In territorial combat, they use the viscous contents of their enlarged mandibular gland reservoirs (MGRs) to kill rival arthropods in characteristic suicidal 'explosions' by voluntary rupture of the gastral integument (autothysis). We show the dissection of worker ants of
