Genetic markers associated with adverse reactions of radioiodine therapy in thyroid cancer patients.

OBJECTIVES: Radioactive iodine therapy is considered for patients with certain clinicopathological factors that predict a significant risk of recurrence, distant metastases of thyroid cancer or disease-specific mortality. The aim of the study was to investigate the association between polymorphisms of genes, products of which are involved in the processes of DNA damage response and autophagy, and the adverse reactions of radioiodine therapy in thyroid cancer patients. METHODS: The study included 181 patients (37 men, 144 women; median age 56 [41; 66.3] years) with histologically confirmed thy

Tongue Mucoceles: a retrospective clinic-pathological evaluation of 240 cases.

BACKGROUND: Minor salivary glands can be found in the ventral and anterior part of the tongue; these glands can rarely develop mucoceles that, due to their rarity and their unusual clinical appearance, may present an interesting differential diagnosis. Mucoceles appear as an exophytic, sometimes pedunculated, lesion, which is a feature that is due to the absence of a capsule; thus, the glands are right beneath the mucosa and over the muscle tissue. The aim of this article is to retrospectively present and discuss the anatomy, pathology, clinical features and therapy of several cases of Blandin

Imaging of Major Salivary Gland Lesions and Disease.

Infectious and inflammatory disorders are the commonest pathologies to affect the major salivary glands however frequently overlap in clinical presentation. Imaging plays an important role in diagnosis, usually initially performed by CT or ultrasound. MRI, with its superior soft-tissue characterization compared with CT, provides a better evaluation of tumors and tumor-like conditions. Imaging features may suggest that a mass is more likely to be benign versus malignant, however, biopsy is often needed to establish a definitive histopathologic diagnosis. Imaging plays a key role in the staging

Impact of Lower Extremity Arthroplasty on Improvement of Quality-of-Life Outcomes Following Lumbar Fusion.

BACKGROUND: Both hip-spine and knee-spine syndromes can significantly impact a patient's quality of life; however, few studies have investigated their effect on postoperative outcomes following lumbar fusion. OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to evaluate the impact of a prior lower extremity arthroplasty on the improvement of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) following lumbar fusion surgery. METHODS: Patients undergoing primary, single, or multilevel lumbar interbody fusion were retrospectively reviewed. Patients missing preoperative PROMs were excluded. PROMs were collected preoperatively

Quality of life after sialendoscopy: prospective non-randomized study.

BACKGROUND: The symptomatic (swelling and pain) salivary gland obstructions are caused by sialolithiasis and salivary duct stenosis, negatively affecting quality of life (QOL), with almost all candidates for clinical measures and minimally invasive sialendoscopy. The impact of sialendoscopy treatment on the QOL has been little addressed nowadays. The objective is to prospectively evaluate the impact of sialendoscopy on the quality of life of patients undergoing sialendoscopy due to benign salivary obstructive diseases, measured through QOL questionnaires of xerostomia degree, the oral health i

Immunological characteristics of IgG4-related Kuttner tumors.

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) has recently been well recognized and Kuttner tumor is known to be a chronic sclerosing sialadenitis, representing the focal manifestation of IgG4-RD, in the submandibular gland (SMG). This study is to evaluate the immunologic features of IgG4-related Kuttner tumor in the SMG. We retrospectively chose 13 patients who were confirmed as having Kuttner tumor by surgical biopsy between May 2012 and January 2019. The fine-needle aspiration cytology, serum antibody levels (anti-Ro antibodies, anti-La antibodies), IgG serum levels (total IgG and IgG4), and

Immunoglobulin G4-related Disease with Marked Eosinophilia: A Case Report and Literature Review.

We encountered a 78-year-old Japanese man with IgG4-related sialoadenitis complicated with marked eosinophilia. We diagnosed him with IgG4-RD (related disease) with a submandibular gland tumor, serum IgG4 elevation, IgG4-positive plasma cell infiltration, and storiform fibrosis. During follow-up after total incision of the submandibular gland, the peripheral eosinophil count was markedly elevated to 29,480/μL. The differential diagnosis of severe eosinophilia without IgG4-RD was excluded. The patient exhibited a prompt response to corticosteroid therapy. His peripheral blood eosinophil count w

Isolated adrenocorticotropic hormone deficiency and sialadenitis associated with nivolumab: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibition with anti-PD(L)1 and anti-CTLA4 antibodies has significantly changed cancer treatment during the last 10 years. Nevertheless, boosting the immune system with immune checkpoint inhibition can result in immune-related adverse events, affecting different organ systems, among which the endocrine system is the most affected. However, there are few descriptions of the association of immune-related adverse events, and the pathophysiology of some is still lacking. Here, we report a 70-year-old Caucasian patient treated with nivolumab (anti-PD1 monoclonal antibo

Sialocoele associated with the molar salivary gland in a British Shorthair cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 16-year-old neutered female British Shorthair cat presented with a 5-year history of swelling lateral to the left mandible that intermittently discharged viscous, clear fluid from a small defect in the skin. CT, ultrasonography, physical characteristics and cytology of the fluid were suggestive of sialocoele. CT showed a large, cavitary, fluid-filled mass lateral to the left mandible. A ventral approach was used to resect the left mandibular, sublingual and molar salivary glands and sialocoele. Histopathology of the molar and mandibular and sublingual glands showed chronic acti

Recurrent neck swelling after iodinated contrast media administration.

A 74-year-old male with an abdominal aortic aneurism reported 2 episodes of neck swelling 16 hours after an abdominal CT with iodinated contrast media that reappeared in a subsequent CT, although the use of pre-medication. The tests used to exclude the hypersensitivity hypothesis where negative and once a new CT where needed we decided to do it with close monitoring. We performed a facial picture and cervical ultrasound exam before and 24 hours after the exam. The neck swelling and the ultrasound findings 24 hours after the CT made the diagnosis of contrast induced sialoadenitis possible. Cont

Radioiodine therapy induced sialadenitis versus chronic idiopathic sialadenitis-Presentation and outcomes.

BACKGROUND: This study explores the unique characters of high dose radioactive iodine (RAI) induced chronic sialadenitis. METHODS: A retrospective study of patients having received salivary endoscopy and followed in our outpatient clinic. RESULTS: A total of 100 patients met the inclusion criteria, 75 were diagnosed with chronic idiopathic sialoadenitis and 25 with radio-iodine induced sialoadenitis (RIS). The main complaint in both groups was swelling of the parotid gland. Pain, dysphagia, and xerostomia were observed considerably more in the RIS group. During sialo-endoscopy, fibrosis of t

Eosinophilic sialoadenitis in a patient with severe asthma: a case report.

Activated eosinophils can infiltrate various tissues and cause inflammatory tissue damage. Asthma is a typical type of eosinophilic inflammatory disease that occurs in the respiratory system. Eosinophilic sialodochitis and sialoadenitis of the salivary gland are rare diseases clinically characterized by painful swelling. In this report, we present a 68-year-old woman with asthma who presented to our hospital with mandibular swelling. Her asthma had been well controlled with an inhaled combination of a corticosteroid and a long-acting β2 agonist, although she reported a past history of frequent
