OBJECTIVE: Sialendoscopy is a minimally invasive approach that enables better visualisation of the salivary ductal system, as well as treatment of salivary stones. A high-definition endoscope (HDE) is excellent for observing deep areas of the oral cavity. We have used these two types of endoscopes for the treatment of submandibular hilar stones. The aim of this study was to review the treatment outcomes of sialendoscopy with/without an HDE for submandibular hilar stones in our patient population.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of 74 cases of submandibular hilar stones that were

OBJECTIVES: To explore a possible difference in the histology of the minor salivary glands in the peritonsillar space between patients with peritonsillar abscess, acute tonsillitis, or tonsillar hypertrophy. To compare if there were remnants of possible changes in elevated serum amylase and its isoenzymes between these three groups to clarify the ambiguous etiology of peritonsillar abscess.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study, in which we analyzed 75 tonsil and blood samples collected from patients with peritonsillar abscess, acute tonsillitis, or tonsillar hypertrophy prior to tonsillec

ABSTRACT: Ventral cervical masses present a diagnostic challenge in dogs, as patient history and clinical examination alone frequently do not reveal their origin or cause. Ultrasonography is considered the imaging modality of choice. It allows detailed evaluation of anatomical structures without radiation exposure and usually without the need for anesthesia. Proper patient positioning (dorsal recumbency with extended head), clipping and the use of a high-frequency linear transducer are essential. A systematic approach based on anatomical landmarks - starting at the larynx and trachea, proceedi

BACKGROUND: Transcervical excision is the conventional treatment for submandibular gland pleomorphic adenomas (SMG PA), but it may result in visible cervical scarring and marginal mandibular nerve injury. This study aimed to establish a standardized endoscopic-assisted transoral surgical protocol and evaluate its feasibility and early outcomes.
METHODS: This study included 120 consecutive patients with cytologically diagnosed SMG PA who underwent standardized endoscopic-assisted transoral resection between February 2023 and May 2025. The primary outcome was procedural feasibility, defined as

INTRODUCTION: Mumps infection primarily leads to parotitis in children. While complications such as orchitis and encephalitis are uncommonly reported, the development of a parotid abscess due to mumps is extremely rare. We present the first described case of parotid abscess secondary to mumps, complicated by a persistent salivary fistula.
BACKGROUND: A 21-month-old unvaccinated, healthy boy presented with right-sided cheek swelling lasting 15 days. Prior treatment at home with amoxicillin-clavulanate did not yield improvement. Sonographic evaluation revealed an enlarged right parotid gland wi

BACKGROUND: Contrast-induced sialadenitis is a rare inflammatory response to iodinated contrast that may present as acute parotid or submandibular swelling. Its mechanism remains poorly defined, making prompt recognition after neuroendovascular procedures essential.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Two patients developed acute neck swelling after elective endovascular treatment of unruptured intracranial aneurysms with iopamidol. The first underwent flow-diverter placement for a right paraclinoid internal carotid artery aneurysm using 140 mL of contrast and developed right cervical swelling within hours. Co

BACKGROUND Iodinated contrast-induced sialadenitis (iodide mumps) is a rare and underrecognized delayed non-allergic adverse reaction to iodinated contrast media. It is characterized by painless or painful swelling of 1 or more salivary glands, typically occurring several hours after contrast exposure. CASE REPORT A 75-year-old Thai woman with stage 3a chronic kidney disease was referred for contrast-enhanced chest computed tomography (CT) imaging to evaluate longstanding bronchiectasis. Because she reported a prior episode of bilateral neck and submandibular swelling shortly after intravenous

Gemella spp. is considered an emerging pathogen that causes endocarditis, sepsis, intracranial abscessation, and other infections in humans. A four-year-old female spayed lop-eared rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) was presented for hyporexia and decreased water consumption. Physical examination revealed a lobulated right cervical mass-like lesion. Gemella cuniculi was cultured from the lesion and confirmed via whole-blood PCR and direct sequencing. CT revealed a right cervical mass involving the right salivary gland with a suspected draining tract and consolidation in the right caudal lung lobe.

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal suppurative sialadenitis (NSS) is an uncommon but serious complication of salivary gland infection, with few cases reported in literature, most often affecting preterm infants. Typical cases involve the parotid gland and are caused by Staphylococcus aureus infection. Contributing factors include prematurity, dehydration, prolonged hospitalisation, and immature immunity. Sequential bilateral gland involvement through haematogenous spread is rare, and presents significant management challenges in prematurity.
PRESENTATION: We report the case of a preterm infant, born at 3

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Background/Objectives: Oral health is a complex concept involving physical, psychological, emotional, and social components. A key factor in maintaining oral tissue integrity is redox balance, which is disrupted by oxidative stress (OS) through an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant defenses. This study examines the contribution of endogenous and exogenous sources to OS and explores the therapeutic potential of medicinal plants from the Asteraceae and Lamiaceae families in restoring redox homeostasis and improving oral health. Methods: A literature review was conduc

Sialolithiasis, or the formation of stones within the salivary glands, is a common cause of the submandibular gland's duct obstruction, which can lead to submandibular abscesses. We reported the case of a 56-year-old man with a submandibular abscess caused by sialolithiasis of the left submandibular gland. A 56-year-old male patient came with complaints of swelling and pain in the left submandibular area for one week. Patients also reported fever, dysphagia, and increased pain while eating. Physical examination showed diffuse swelling and redness in the left submandibular area. Head MSCT and p

Sialectasis, defined as a dilated salivary duct, is an uncommon salivary disease. There are limited published data regarding salivary gland disease or anatomy of the salivary system in rabbits. In dogs, computed tomography (CT) is described as the imaging modality of choice for salivary gland disease. Identification of the correct diseased gland and respective duct is required for surgical planning. There are currently no studies describing CT features of parotid sialectasis in rabbits. The aim of this single-center, retrospective, and descriptive study was to determine CT features of confirme

Odontogenic cutaneous fistulas (OCFs) are relatively uncommon in veterinary patients. They are typically caused by chronic periapical infections of the maxillary teeth. Mandibular OCFs that extend through the cortical bone into submandibular soft tissues are extremely rare. This report describes the case of a 14-year-old male mixed-breed dog that presented with a submandibular cutaneous lesion initially misdiagnosed as a salivary mucocele. OCFs are frequently misdiagnosed because atypical presentations may lack obvious intraoral abnormalities and mimic salivary gland disease, lymphadenopathy,

BACKGROUND: Acute postoperative major salivary gland adenitis is a rare complication characterized by swelling of the salivary glands, most commonly associated with skull base neurosurgical procedures. Its occurrence following supratentorial non-skull base craniotomies is uncommon and may be overlooked.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a 45-year-old man who developed ipsilateral parotid gland inflammation within 24 h after undergoing a frontal interhemispheric craniotomy for resection of a craniopharyngioma. The procedure was performed in the supine position with 90° head rotation and 45° neck fle

BACKGROUND: Head and neck area abscesses are severe bacterial infections that commonly arise as complications of viral upper respiratory tract infections in pediatric patients. These infections can affect various anatomical structures, including the tonsils, retropharyngeal spaces, paranasal sinuses, middle ear, and salivary glands. The most frequent clinical presentations include otomastoiditis, retropharyngeal abscesses, and periorbital cellulitis. Although traditionally considered rare in developed countries, in recent years, particularly in the post-COVID-19 (COronaVIrus Disease 19) pandem

BACKGROUND: Infection caused by Dialister micraerophilus (D. micraerophilus), a slow-growing, anaerobic or microaerophilic, small gram-negative coccobacillus, has been rarely reported, and its clinical characteristics remain insufficiently defined.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old woman presented with a submandibular gland abscess and bacteremia caused by D. micraerophilus. The underlying etiology of this infection was salivary gland dysfunction associated with Sjögren's syndrome (SS), which led to submandibular gland abscess formation and subsequent hematogenous dissemination, resulting in b
