Secondary Unilateral Cleft Lip Repair Using a Novel Neurovascular Protection Method: A Three-Dimensional Evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: We proposed a novel neurovascular protection technique based on the intramuscular neurovascular partitions of the upper lip in nasolabial muscle biomechanical bionic surgery for secondary unilateral cleft lip repair. The aim of this study was to describe this modification and evaluate the short-term and long-term outcomes compared with the results of traditional repair. METHODS: A total of 44 patients with secondary unilateral cleft lips were included in this study, and were divided into 2 groups: 22 patients treated with the traditional repair, and the other 22 treated with the m

Mint condition? A survey of allergenic ingredients in UK toothpastes.

Toothpastes may induce cheilitis, intraoral lichenoid changes and immediate hypersensitivity reactions. There is little published information documenting the range of allergens in toothpastes. In 2024, a survey was conducted of 291 toothpastes sold by 5 of the UK's largest cosmetics suppliers. Labelling quality and ingredients were recorded. Of the 291 toothpastes, 2 (0.7%) had no ingredients list. Of the remaining 289 (99.3%), the mean number of ingredients was 16.6; 286 (99.0%) contained fragrance, often labelled nonspecifically as 'aroma'. Limonene was in 159/289 (55.0%) and menthol-related

Dimensional and Volumetric Analysis of the Oropharyngeal Airway in Oral Submucous Fibrosis Patients: A Cone Beam Computed Tomography Study.

Introduction Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a chronic, potentially malignant disorder associated with areca nut consumption that may extend beyond the oral mucosa to affect the oropharyngeal airway, an area still inadequately characterized using three-dimensional imaging. This study aimed to comparatively evaluate oropharyngeal airway dimensions and volume across different clinical stages of OSMF and healthy controls using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods This prospective cross-sectional study included 80 CBCT scans: 20 healthy controls (group 1) and 60 OSMF patients equally di

Super-Passive Alveolar Correcting Equipment (SPACE): a novel presurgical cleft device with 5-year outcomes following one-stage repair.

In patients with unilateral cleft lip, alveolus, and palate (U-CLAP), wide clefts negatively affect facial aesthetics, alveolar alignment, and speech. Although various presurgical orthopedic devices have been used, none reliably achieve substantial cleft narrowing. This study introduces the Super-Passive Alveolar Correcting Equipment (SPACE), a molar-supported passive plate that significantly reduces cleft width, narrowing the mean alveolar gap to 1.87 mm before surgery (n = 83). SPACE enabled a one-stage repair - lip repair, gingivoperiosteoplasty, and palatoplasty - performed at approximatel

Management of airway hemorrhage with endobronchial valve in patients undergoing pulmonary endarterectomy- an expert center experience: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary endarterectomy is an established treatment for selected patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension. And bleeding into the airways is a feared complication of this surgical technique. Although its incidence is relatively low (0.4–6%), its mortality rate remains very high (> 50%). Its current management involves isolating the source of bleeding with a bronchial blocker or, if necessary, using a double-lumen endotracheal tube. In our case, we describe the use of endobronchial valve instead of blocker to treat source of bleeding. The procedure we chose has no

Denosumab-functionalized nanoparticles target macrophages to mitigate age-related osteoarthritis and osteoporosis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) and osteoporosis (OP) are prevalent degenerative diseases in the elderly population, often coexisting and sharing a common pathogenic mechanism involving the receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand/receptor activator of nuclear factor κB (RANKL/RANK) signaling pathway. Denosumab (DS) has shown efficacy in treating OA and OP. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism through which DS mitigates age-related OA-OP by regulating macrophage polarization. Due to the poor targeting ability of DS to macrophages, we have prepared folate-modified liposomes (Lip-FA) loaded w

Clinical and molecular characterization of ILD in patients with overlapping ASyS and SjD: a retrospective observational study.

OBJECTIVE: Interstitial lung disease (ILD) is a frequent complication in both anti-synthetase syndrome (ASyS) and primary Sjögren's disease (pSjD), but the clinical and molecular phenotype of patients with overlapping ASyS and pSjD (ASyS-SjD) remains poorly defined. This study aimed to characterize the clinical, serological, radiological and transcriptomic features of ASyS-SjD patients with ILD, and to determine whether this overlap represents a distinct disease entity. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 131 ASyS, 78 pSjD and 42 ASyS-SjD patients from the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjin

Temporomandibular joint ankylosis associated with psoriasis and familial Mediterranean fever: a rare case report.

Autoimmune and autoinflammatory diseases, though traditionally considered distinct, share overlapping pathogenic mechanisms that complicate diagnosis and management, particularly in joint involvement. Psoriasis-especially when associated with inflammatory joint manifestations-and familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) exemplify this overlap. Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involvement is well recognized in connective tissue diseases; however, its presentation in such overlapping clinical states remains underreported and poorly understood. To the best of our knowledge, we present the first documented

A New Unsupervised Machine Learning Method for Metabarcoding Analysis Based on Selected Mock Community Data.

DNA metabarcoding analysis has emerged as a powerful tool for biological monitoring, enabling the identification and assessment of biodiversity across ecosystems. Conventional analytical methods, including operational taxonomic unit (OTU) clustering and amplicon sequence variant (ASV) analysis, have demonstrated strengths and limitations, including bias in estimating biodiversity and challenges in detecting rare sequences. To address these challenges, we developed unsupervised machine learning (UML)-based methods utilizing hierarchical density-based spatial clustering of applications with nois

The orofacial cleft risk gene IRF6 is a target gene of SOX9 in cranial neural crest cells.

Orofacial clefts represent the most prevalent congenital anomalies affecting the craniofacial region. They can be evoked by a disturbed development of either oral epithelium or cranial neural crest-derived mesenchyme, or by disruptions of their interplay. IRF6 is a well-known risk gene associated with non-syndromic orofacial clefts and causative for Van der Woude syndrome, an autosomal dominant syndrome characterized by orofacial clefting and lower lip pits. Its expression in the oral epithelium depends on the transcription factor TFAP2A. We here show by immunofluorescence on mouse embryonic s

Cleft Lip and Palate is Common in PORCN-Related Focal Dermal Hypoplasia in Asians: Three New Case Reports and Literature Review.

Focal dermal hypoplasia is an X-linked dominant genetic disorder predominantly affecting females, caused by loss-of-function variants in the PORCN gene, characterized by ectodermal, skeletal, craniofacial and ocular structural abnormalities. We report three cases with de novo novel variants, and performed a comprehensive review of the clinical features of this disorder focusing on Asian patients, and identified significant differences compared with previous literature focusing on Caucasian patients. Cleft lip and palate is a frequently reported feature in Asian patients, but not in Caucasians.

Investigating global gender gap in lip and oral cavity cancer: A population-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Lip and oral cavity cancer (LOC) is typically male predominant, yet in several countries women experience a comparable or even higher burden. Quantifying gender differences in LOC and their social determinants is essential for equitable cancer control. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analysed Global Burden of Disease 2021 estimates for LOC from 1990 to 2021 across 204 countries and territories. Gender disparities were assessed using the Female-to-Male disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) ratio. Temporal trends were evaluated using estimated annual percentage change (EAPC), and forec
