Is Intraoperative Biopsy Necessary for Gastric Ulcer Perforation? A Systematic Review.

Introduction: Gastric ulcer perforation is a life-threatening surgical emergency in which delay is poorly tolerated. In this setting a specimen is taken from ulcer margin to detect possible malignancy risk. The purpose of the present systematic review is to evaluate the need of intraoperative biopsy in gastric ulcer perforations using current biopsy-proven malignancy rates and its effect on complications. Methods: The review was carried out in line with the PRISMA guidelines and was registered (INPLASY202650135). Reports describing adults who operated on for a perforated gastric ulcer were con

Gastric ulcers: Biomaterial‑based strategies for tissue regeneration and future perspectives on environment‑designed biomaterials.

Despite significant progress in our understanding of stomach physiology and the identification of key etiological factors, peptic ulcer disease continues to be a prevalent condition with global health implications. Current therapeutic interventions primarily target systemic pharmacological pathways, focusing on the suppression of acid secretion and the management of Helicobacter pylori infection. However, these therapeutic approaches frequently fail to achieve effective local tissue regeneration, complete mucosal restoration, functional re-establishment, or prevention of recurrence. Consequent

[Comparative study on efficacy and mechanism of stone-epiphytic and living tree-epiphytic Dendrobium nobile against alcohol-induced gastric ulcers in rats based on serum metabolomics].

This study investigated the differences in protective effects of aqueous extracts from stone-epiphytic and living tree-epiphytic Dendrobium nobile on alcohol-induced gastric ulcers in rats, and elucidated the scientific connotation of the traditional assertion that "Dendrobium grown on stones is superior" from the perspectives of material basis and pharmacodynamics. The chemical profiles of aqueous extracts from the two cultivation modes were compared. Rats were randomly divided into control group, model group, omeprazole group, low-and high-dose stone-epiphytic D. nobile(LSE, HSE) g

Mechanically Active Adhesive Hydrogels Driven by Peptide Self-Assembly for Accelerated Healing of Diverse Wounds.

Emerging mechanically active hydrogels offer a promising therapeutic strategy for accelerating wound healing by promoting wound contraction. However, existing approaches to drive hydrogel contraction remain limited, and their inherent drawbacks hinder broader application across diverse wound types. Herein, a stimuli-responsive peptide self-assembly system is introduced into the hydrogel network, resulting in a novel mechanically active hydrogel (denoted as GHPD) capable of assembly-driven contraction and robust tissue adhesion. The GHPD can rapidly form in situ and adhere firmly to wound tissu

The usefulness of endoscopic closure of the ulcer floor following endoscopic submucosal dissection of the stomach.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Bleeding and perforation remain major complications after gastric endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). Simple clip-based closure techniques, including the reopenable-clip over-the-line method (ROLM) and the ORIGAMI method, have recently been developed in Japan, but clinical evidence supporting their use is limited. This study evaluated the feasibility and clinical effectiveness of post-ESD gastric ulcer closure using these techniques in a community hospital. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included patients who underwent gastric ESD between April 2021 an

Oral argan oil attenuates gastric mucosal injury and shapes macrophage effector functions in a preclinical ethanol-induced ulcer model.

BACKGROUND: Macrophages are central to mucosal defense and key regulators of tissue homeostasis and inflammation, representing important targets for immunomodulatory strategies in gastric injury. This study investigated the modulatory effects of argan oil on macrophage effector functions, focusing on lipid droplet (LD) dynamics and macrophage extracellular trap (METosis)-associated cellular events under basal and ethanol-induced gastric ulcer conditions. METHODS: In a preclinical randomized ethanol-induced gastric ulcer model, peritoneal resident macrophages (PRMϕs), a well-established primar

Effects of omeprazole therapy administered via different routes on urinary parameters and selected interleukins in horses with equine gastric ulcer syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Equine gastric ulcer syndrome (EGUS) is commonly treated with proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole, administered orally or by injection. In humans, omeprazole has been associated with acute interstitial nephritis (AIN) and acute kidney injury (AKI), potentially linked to oxidative stress, and urinary interleukins may serve as early non-invasive markers. However, this association has not been established in horses. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of oral and injectable omeprazole on basic urinary parameters and selected interleukin levels, with particular emphasis on the po

Balloon Enteroscopy-assisted Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography for Choledocholithiasis in Situs Inversus Totalis With Billroth II Reconstruction: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) in patients with situs inversus totalis (SIT) and Billroth II reconstruction is technically challenging because of mirror-image anatomy, altered access to the papilla, and inverted papillary orientation. A 56-year-old man with a history of distal gastrectomy with Billroth II reconstruction for a gastric ulcer 20 years earlier was found to have common bile duct stones on pre-ERCP imaging. ERCP was performed in the prone position, as in conventional ERCP, with the endoscopist standing on the patient's right side. A short-type single-balloon e

Phytochemical-driven angiogenesis and mucosal regeneration in gastric ulcer healing: molecular mechanisms, preclinical evidence, and translational perspectives.

Gastric ulcer remains a significant global gastrointestinal condition characterized by disruption of the gastric mucosal barrier, attributed to oxidative stress, inflammation, Helicobacter pylori infection, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (aspirin, indomethacin, diclofenac), and compromised tissue repair. While traditional therapies effectively reduce acid secretion and eliminate H. pylori, they often do not actively promote mucosal regeneration and angiogenesis, both of which are crucial for the complete healing of ulcers and the prevention of recurrence. This review integrates molecular

Root Cause Analysis-based Risk Management Nursing Protocol For Patients With Gastric Ulcer.

Gastric ulcer is a chronic digestive disorder characterized by recurrence, complications, and reduced quality of life. Although pharmacological treatment remains essential, variability in nursing processes, incomplete risk identification, and insufficient follow-up may hinder recovery and long-term disease control. Root cause analysis (RCA) is a structured quality-improvement method used to identify underlying causes of care-related risks and to guide targeted corrective action. This article describes a reproducible RCA-based risk management nursing workflow for hospitalized patients with gast

Combined Omeprazole and Glycyrrhiza glabra L. Extract Attenuate Ethanol-Induced Gastric Ulceration Through Modulation of TLR4/NF-κB/NLRP3 Signaling and Upregulation of PI3K/AKT/mTOR Gene Expression.

Ethanol (EtOH)-induced gastric ulcer (GU) is a common model used to investigate mechanisms of mucosal injury and repair. Omeprazole (OMP) is a conventional anti-ulcer drug that effectively suppresses gastric acid secretion, but its efficacy may be enhanced by combining it with bioactive phytochemicals derived from a Glycyrrhiza glabra L. (licorice; LIQ) extract that possess potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the gastroprotective effects of OMP, LIQ extract, and their combined treatment against EtOH-induced GU in rats, focusing on m

Asiatic acid attenuates indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer in rats: Association with reduced IFN-γ/JAK-1/STAT3 signaling.

Gastric ulceration is a common dose-limiting adverse effect associated with the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Asiatic acid (AA) is a naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpenoid that has been reported to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and healing properties. The present study investigated the potential protective effect of AA against indomethacin-induced gastric ulceration in rats. Male rats were divided into five groups: control, indomethacin (50 mg/kg), indomethacin + AA (25 mg/kg), indomethacin + AA (50 mg/kg), and indomethacin + omeprazole (30 mg/kg). Indo

Optimization of Sutab Preparation for Colonoscopy in Gastric Ulcer Cases: A Case Report.

Sutab, a sodium sulfate oral tablet, was developed as an alternative to traditional colonoscopy preparation (prep) solutions, which usually involve the ingestion of about three liters of a polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution to clear the bowels. This traditional method can be unpleasant, leading to barriers for patients seeking colonoscopies due to the large volume of distasteful fluid and resulting diarrhea. Sutab consists of 24 sodium sulfate tablets; patients are instructed to take 12 tablets the night before the procedure with at least 16 ounces of water, followed by another 12 tablets 5-6

Comparative effects of combined omeprazole and dose-escalated striatin therapy versus monotherapy on VEGF, ITF, gastric ulcer area, epithelial thickness, and inflammatory response in rats with aspirin-induced gastric injury.

INTRODUCTION: Aspirin-induced gastritis results from reduced prostaglandin synthesis and increased oxidative stress, compromising gastric mucosal integrity. While omeprazole effectively suppresses gastric acid secretion, it does not directly promote mucosal regeneration. Striatin, a bioactive fraction of Channa striata, has anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties and may enhance mucosal healing. PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate whether adjunctive striatin at escalating doses enhances the therapeutic effect of omeprazole in aspirin-induced gastric injury. METHODS: A controlled expe
