Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), a Biosafety level 4 pathogen transmitted by ticks, causes severe haemorrhagic diseases in humans but remains clinically silent in animals. Over the past forty years, Nigeria lacks comprehensive genetic data on CCHFV in livestock and ticks. This study aimed to identify and characterize CCHFV strains in cattle and their Hyalomma ticks, the primary vector, in Kwara State, Nigeria. Blood samples and Hyalomma ticks were collected from cattle, with ticks identified to species, pooled, and homogenized for RNA extraction. The CCHFV S-segment was detected

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) poses a significant public health threat due to its potential for causing severe disease in humans and its wide geographic distribution. The virus, primarily transmitted by Hyalomma ticks, is prevalent across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. Understanding the virus's spread among tick populations is crucial for assessing its transmission dynamics. Vertebrates play a key role in CCHF epidemiology by supporting tick populations and acting as virus carriers during viremia. Livestock, such as cattle, sheep, and goats, amplify the virus and i

INTRODUCTION: Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) and Nairobi sheep disease virus (NSDV) are orthonairoviruses of concern, able to cause haemorragic fever disease in humans and sheep, respectively. CCHFV and NSDV cocirculating in small ruminant populations across South Asia and East Africa. Cross-reactivity to viruses of the Orthonairovirus genus can potentially interfere with serological assays when employed for serosurveillance in regions where two or more genus members overlap in their distribution.
METHODS: In this study, sheep sera sampled from a region of confirmed CCHFV circ

The dangerous Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), an encapsulated negative-sense RNA virus of the family Nairoviridae, is transmitted from person to person via ticks. With a case fatality rate between 10% to 40%, the most common ways that the disease may spread to humans are via tick bites or coming into touch with infected animals' blood or tissues. Furthermore, the transfer of bodily fluids between individuals is another potential route of infection. There is a wide range of symptoms experienced by patients throughout each stage, from myalgia and fever to extreme bruising and exce

Free-living ticks such as Hyalomma lusitanicum pose a risk to their hosts primarily due to their role as vectors of diseases, with Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) being an emerging disease of particular concern in the Iberian Peninsula. This study aims to understand the environmental determinants as well as the host effects that influence the abundance of H. lusitanicum at a small spatial scale. Understanding these factors is essential in identifying areas with a higher risk of tick abundance and, consequently, a greater likelihood of encountering a tick. We conducted 3,840 drags in 32

INTRODUCTION: Emerging and/or re-emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) in the East Africa region are associated with climate change-induced environmental drivers. There is a need for a comprehensive understanding of these environmental drivers and to adopt an integrated risk analysis (IRA) framework for addressing a combination of the biological, environmental and socioeconomic factors that increase population vulnerabilities to EID risks to inform biological risk mitigation and cross-sectoral decision-making. The aim of this integrative review was to identify knowledge gaps and contribute to a

Crimean Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is an emerging, life-threatening tick-borne infection that can be fatal. As yet, there is no definitive treatment. In this case report we present a severe paediatric CCHF case that was successfully treated with anakinra. A previously healthy 13-year-old female presented with high fever, fatigue, rash and loss of appetite. Bone marrow aspiration showed rare haemophagocytocis and the patient's clinical condition continued to deteriorate. Anakinra was given on the day 5 of admission, as she was in the midst of cytokine storm syndrome. By the third day of an

OBJECTIVES: Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever is a lethal tick-borne disease characterised by initially nonspecific symptoms. While thrombocytopenia and leucopenia are established diagnostic markers, there is a need for earlier indicators. This study evaluates lymphopenia as a marker for Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever.
METHODS: This retrospective study analysed patients admitted with arthropod bites from 2018 to 2021. Patients were classified based on initial leucocyte and platelet counts into Group 1 (normal values) and Group 2 (low values). Within Group 1, patients were classified as Group

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is the most prevalent tick-borne zoonotic bunyavirus, causing severe hemorrhagic fever and fatality in humans. Currently, the absence of approved vaccines or therapeutics for CCHFV infection necessitates the development of innovative therapeutic strategies. Here, we identify a guanine (G)-rich sequence located within the mRNA of the glycoprotein precursor in the medium (M) segment of the CCHFV genome, designated as M-PQS-1664(+). M-PQS-1664(+) can form stable G-quadruplex (G4) structure and functions as a negative regulatory element for viral repl

BACKGROUND: Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne disease caused by a virus belonging to the Orthonairovirus genus. Mononuclear phagocytic cells, hepatocytes and endothelial cells are known to be the primary targets of the CCHF virus during the infection. Epitranscriptomes refers to all chemical modifications of RNA within a cell. The most common among these-and the focus of this study- is N6-methyladenosine (m6A) methylation.
METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, for the first time, we investigated the expression profiles of ALKBH5, FTO and YTHDF2 genes using quantitative real

Hyalomma marginatum and Hyalomma rufipes are tick species of high medical importance, primarily due to their ability to transmit the Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus. While H. marginatum is endemic in Southern Europe, H. rufipes maintains viable populations exclusively in Africa. Nevertheless, adult specimens of both tick species are frequently detected in non-endemic regions of Europe. This phenomenon is primarily driven by bird migration, during which these two-host ticks can be transported over great distances. To enhance our understanding of the role of birds in the dispersal of Hyal

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is a zoonotic pathogen whose main vector and reservoir are Hyalomma ticks. The recent emergence of the severe disease in humans caused by this virus in southwestern Europe has alerted sanitary authorities about its public health significance. This study was aimed to assess the role of the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) in the epidemiology of CCHFV in the Iberian Peninsula. Of 554 lynxes tested, anti-CCHFV antibodies were detected in 66 animals (11.9 %; 95 % confidence intervals (CI): 9.2-14.6). Age was a risk factor associated with exposure to CCHFV

INTRODUCTION: The development of parameters to estimate the risk of transmission of infections is one of the objectives of entomological surveillance, included in the National Plan for the Prevention, Surveillance and Control of Vector-Borne Diseases. This study aims to assess the utility of the infection prevalence (IP) of Rickettsia spp., Borrelia burgdorferi, and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) in ticks in Spain, as an indicator of the risk of infection from a tick bite and for temporal and geographical comparisons.
METHODS: The IP and its 95% confidence interval (95% CI) we
