BACKGROUND: Ebola virus disease (EVD) remains a serious public health hazard due to high mortality, multiple modes of transmission, and persistence in the environment. The existing Ebola transmission models have been constrained to a single or two-population framework, which are insufficient to capture multiple-population interaction transmission structures.
METHODS: This study proposes a multi-population autonomous Ebola transmission model with Susceptible, Exposed, Infectious, Hospitalized, Recovered, and Deceased infected corpse compartments and a shared viral reservoir in the environment.

Background/Objectives: Diagnosing Ebola virus disease (EVD) based solely on clinical signs remains challenging in settings where its manifestations overlap with other endemic infections. This study aimed to validate a Bayesian clinical diagnostic model to support decision-making for suspected EVD cases in resource-limited settings without access to laboratory confirmation. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis using data from the 10th Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2018-2020). Clinical information from 450 suspected and laboratory-confirmed EVD cases was evalu

BACKGROUND: Antibody-based therapies have become a cornerstone of Ebola virus disease (EVD) treatment and prevention, particularly following the successful clinical development of monoclonal antibody therapeutics against Zaire ebolavirus. However, despite substantial advances, the global research landscape, collaboration patterns, and evolving thematic trends of Ebola antibody therapy have not been systematically characterized. The ongoing 2026 Bundibugyo ebolavirus outbreak, for which no licensed vaccines or therapeutics currently exist, further underscores the importance of understanding the

BackgroundThrough health system reforms Sierra Leone has achieved reductions from 1,603 to 354 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births between 2000 and 2023, but progress has been uneven and severely disrupted by the 2013-2016 Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak. National surveys track key maternal health indicators but provide limited insight into assisted vaginal delivery and women's access to emergency obstetric care, including caesarean section, during and after health system shocks.ObjectivesTo describe patterns of caesarean section and assisted vaginal delivery, place and mode of transpor

Ebola virus disease (EVD) remains one of the most severe viral hemorrhagic fevers, with recurrent outbreaks challenging global healthcare systems. This narrative review traces the evolving epidemiology of EVD from the first recognized outbreaks in 1976 to the ongoing 2026 Bundibugyo virus public health emergency in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda. Over nearly five decades, the recognized range of Ebola outbreak contexts and amplification mechanisms has broadened considerably: rural zoonotic spillovers remain the predominant mode of emergence, but the scale and reach of su

BACKGROUND: The 2026 outbreak of Bundibugyo Ebola virus disease (BDBV) in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), centered in Ituri Province, represents the largest documented outbreak caused by Bundibugyo ebolavirus since its discovery in Uganda in 2007. The outbreak evolved within a complex humanitarian setting characterized by armed conflict, population displacement, mining-related migration, weak health systems, extensive population mobility, and an infodemic environment marked by misinformation and reduced public trust. We conducted a field investigation to assess epidemiological,

Ebola virus (EBOV) has been shown to persist in the reproductive tracts of male Ebola virus disease (EVD) survivors ranging from months to years following recovery, with shedding of EBOV in semen leading to chains of disease transmission. In the current study, we used a mouse model of EBOV infection to investigate the timing of virus infiltration of the male reproductive tissues, the extent of virus persistence in these tissues, and the impact of persistence on tissue health. We challenged male Ifnar-/- mice with wild-type EBOV and collected blood, liver, testis, epididymis, and sperm samples

The 2026 Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, the first Ebola-related PHEIC caused by a species lacking a licensed vaccine, has been accompanied by an information crisis marked by conspiracy-driven violence against response teams and destruction of treatment centres. Understanding what populations actually seek to know during such events is essential for designing effective communication strategies, yet the content of public information demand during Ebola outbreaks has not been systematically characterised. We combined Google Autocomplete query

Africa remains the epicenter of filovirus outbreaks, including Ebola virus disease (EVD) and Marburg virus disease (MVD), which continue to expose systemic weaknesses in epidemic preparedness and response systems. Despite the existence of national and regional policies, these deadly diseases continue to emerge across the continent, underscoring the urgent need for integrated strategies that align governance, policy, and health security innovation to strengthen resilience and mitigate the impact of future outbreaks. We reviewed the trajectory of EVD and MVD outbreaks in Africa from 1975 and 202

BACKGROUND: Marburg virus disease (MVD) is a rare but highly fatal zoonotic illness. Current serological tools are limited by their reliance on glycoprotein (GP)-based antigens or Marburg virus infected cell lysates, which cannot distinguish natural infection induced immune responses from GP-based vaccines. This diagnostic gap complicates the detection of missed cases particularly in areas of high vaccination coverage.
METHODS: We developed and validated two complementary assays: a nucleoprotein C-terminal tail (NPct) Mix-and-Read (MR) assay and a recombinant GP1,2ΔTM ELISA. Serum samples use

Ebola virus disease and Marburg virus disease are severe, highly lethal infections caused by filoviruses, characterized by rapid transmission, complex clinical management, and major socio-economic impact. A narrative review of recent outbreaks between 2021 and 2025 underscores persistent systemic gaps that compromise early detection and effective containment. The recurrence of Ebola and Marburg outbreaks demonstrates that, although progress has been made since the 2014-2016 West African epidemic, substantial vulnerabilities persist.

Large host-virus association databases are increasingly used to explore broad questions in disease ecology, particularly around host range, pathogen diversity, and the potential for spillover. While these databases have been instrumental in large-scale synthesis of host-pathogen biogeography and zoonotic risk, their potential role in addressing fine-scale questions about pathogen prevalence, maintenance, and transmission dynamics remains underexplored. In this study, we build on previous efforts to assess how different types of data, including both entries in databases and the original studies

Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) comprise a heterogeneous group of severe infectious diseases that continue to represent a major global health concern. Although many VHFs remain endemic to regions of Africa, Asia, and the Americas, their wide geographic distribution, together with increasing international travel and global trade, facilitates the importation of cases into non-endemic areas and raises the risk of secondary transmission under favorable ecological and epidemiological conditions. These infections are frequently associated with high case-fatality rates and impose a substantial social

OBJECTIVES: Timely, clinically relevant outbreak intelligence is critical in an evolving infectious disease landscape. Over twelve years, the Amsterdam UMC Centre of Tropical Medicine and Travel Medicine produced weekly Epi Alerts (EAs), summarizing reports for travel and tropical medicine clinicians. We analysed these EAs to describe pathogen and disease distributions, explore temporal and geographic trends and reporting biases, and evaluate cited source accessibility.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of all EAs (April 2013-December 2024). Data from 454 bulletins yielded 10,619

Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) remain a major public health threat in resource-limited settings. The 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic exposed critical gaps in laboratory preparedness and diagnostic capacity in most-at-risk countries, including Guinea. In order to implement sustainable in-country laboratory capacity for early detection and rapid response to VHF outbreaks, a decentralized diagnostics laboratory strengthening program started in the forested region of Guinea in Guéckédou (2017) and N'Zérékoré (2021). Between 2017 and 2024, a total of 4683 samples from suspected VHF cases were tested acro
