Molecular Characterisation and Phylogeny of Tula Virus in Kazakhstan.

Orthohantaviruses are zoonotic pathogens that play a significant role in public health. These viruses can cause haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Eurasia. In the Republic of Kazakhstan, the first human cases were registered in the year 2000 in the West Kazakhstan region. Small mammals can be reservoirs of orthohantaviruses. Previous studies showed orthohantavirus antigens in wild-living small mammals in four districts of West Kazakhstan. Clinical studies suggested that there might be further regions with human orthohantavirus infections in Kazakhstan, but genetic data of orthohantaviru

A rare case of acute acalculous cholecystitis secondary to hantavirus infection with renal syndrome.

Hantaviruses are single-stranded RNA viruses. They are transmitted to humans by rodents and insectivore hosts. Some Hantavirus subtypes are the causative agents of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), which is characterized by fever, thrombocytopenia, and acute kidney injury. Hantavirus infection is difficult to diagnose due to its non-specific clinical symptoms. Causes of acalculous cholecystitis are severe trauma or burn, surgery, long-term starvation and some viral infections. It is very rare for Hantavirus to cause acute acalculous cholecystitis. The treatment of acute acalculous

Adenosine Deaminase is a Potential Molecular Marker for Diagnosis and Prognosis of Haemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a serious zoonotic disease which seriously endangers physical health and mainly occurs in China. To date, there is still a lack of early and novel biomarkers to detect the severity of disease and prognosis of HFRS. This study was aimed to examine the value of the serum Adenosine deaminase (ADA) concentrations in the patients with HFRS. METHODS: The clinical and laboratory data of 124 adult patients with HFRS and 131 patients with similar clinical symptoms to HFRS were analyzed. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used

First report of an imported case of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in South Africa.

Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is caused by hantavirus infection. Hantaviruses are not endemic to South Africa, and we report the first detection of an imported case of HFRS in the country. The case involved a traveller from Croatia who presented to a Johannesburg hospital with an acute febrile illness with renal dysfunction. The patient reported visiting rurally located horse stables in Croatia before falling ill, and that a worker in the stables with similar illness was diagnosed with HFRS. Given the exposure history and clinical findings of the case, a clinical diagnosis of H

The presence of intraperitoneal, retroperitoneal and pleural fluid in acute Puumala hantavirus infection.

BACKGROUND: Puumala hantavirus (PUUV) causes most cases of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Europe. PUUV infection is characterised by acute kidney injury, thrombocytopenia and increased capillary leakage. Typical symptoms are fever, headache, nausea, abdominal and back pain. This study aimed to evaluate the amount and distribution of intraperitoneal, retroperitoneal and pleural fluid and the association of fluid collections to the symptoms and clinical findings in patients with acute PUUV infection. METHODS: Abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed on 27 hospi

[ECMO cannulation for COVID-19].

Dysfunctions of the somatosensory system are among the clinical signs that characterize a variety of polyglutamine or CAG-repeat diseases. Deficits within this system may hinder the perception of potential threats, be detrimental to somatomotor functions, and result in uncoordinated movements, ataxia, and falls. Despite the considerable clinical relevance of such deficits, however, no systematic pathoanatomical studies of the central somatosensory system in polyglutamine diseases are currently available. The present paper has two goals: (1) recommendation of an economical tissue sampling metho

Human infection with Seoul orthohantavirus in Korea, 2019.

Of various rodent-borne hantaviruses, Seoul orthohantavirus (SEOV) causes haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS), as does Hantaan orthohantavirus (HTNV). Given global-scale of cases of human infection with SEOV, it is of great clinical importance to distinguish SEOV from other HFRS-causing hantaviruses. In May 2019, a middle-aged patient who had lived in a suburban area of Chungcheong Province, Republic of Korea and enjoyed outdoor activities was transferred to Asan Medical Center in Seoul, Republic of Korea with HFRS; his symptoms included high fever and generalized myalgia. The rapid

Immune response during hantavirus diseases: implications for immunotherapies and vaccine design.

Orthohantaviruses, previously named hantaviruses, cause two emerging zoonotic diseases: haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Eurasia and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) in the Americas. Overall, over 200 000 cases are registered every year worldwide, with a fatality rate ranging between 0·1% and 15% for HFRS and between 20% and 40% for HCPS. No specific treatment or vaccines have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat or prevent hantavirus-caused syndromes. Currently, little is known about the mechanisms at the basis of hantavirus-induced d

New class of hantaan virus inhibitors based on conjugation of the isoindole fragment to (+)-camphor or (-)-fenchone hydrazonesv.

This work presents the design and synthesis of camphor, fenchone, and norcamphor N-acylhydrazone derivatives as a new class of inhibitors of the Hantaan virus, which causes haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). A cytopathic model was developed for testing chemotherapeutics against the Hantaan virus, strain 76-118. In addition, a study of the antiviral activity was carried out using a pseudoviral system. It was found that the hit compound possesses significant activity (IC50 = 7.6 ± 2 µM) along with low toxicity (CC50 > 1000 µM). Using molecular docking procedures, the binding with Han

Isolation and Genetic Characterization of Puumala Orthohantavirus Strains from France.

Puumala orthohantavirus (PUUV) causes a mild form of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) called nephropathia epidemica (NE), regularly diagnosed in Europe. France represents the western frontier of the expansion of NE in Europe with two distinct areas: an endemic area (north-eastern France) where PUUV circulates in rodent populations, with the detection of many human NE cases, and a non-endemic area (south-western France) where the virus is not detected, with only a few human cases being reported. In this study, we describe the different stages of the isolation of two PUUV strains fr

Generation of plasma cells and CD27-IgD- B cells during hantavirus infection is associated with distinct pathological findings.

OBJECTIVE: Human hantavirus infections can cause haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). The pathogenic mechanisms are not fully understood, nor if they affect the humoral immune system. The objective of this study was to investigate humoral immune responses to hantavirus infection and to correlate them to the typical features of HFRS: thrombocytopenia and transient kidney dysfunction. METHODS: We performed a comprehensive characterisation of longitudinal antiviral B-cell responses of 26 hantavirus patients and combined this with paired clinical data. In addition, we measured extracell

Hormonal Defects Are Common during Puumala Hantavirus Infection and Associate with Disease Severity and Biomarkers of Altered Haemostasis.

Central and peripheral hormone deficiencies have been documented during and after acute hantavirus infection. Thrombocytopenia and coagulation abnormalities are common findings in haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). The associations between coagulation and hormonal abnormalities in HFRS have not been studied yet. Forty-two patients diagnosed with Puumala virus (PUUV) infection were examined during the acute phase and on a follow-up visit approximately one month later. Hormonal defects were common during acute PUUV infection. Overt (clinical) hypogonadism was identified in 80% of the

The association of ABO blood types with host susceptibility to hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome.

Since the discovery of ABO blood types, there has been mounting evidence of the association between blood types and infectious diseases. However, so far, there is rarely available research about the potential role of ABO blood types in haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) infection. Our aim was to investigate the relationship between ABO blood types and the development of HFRS infection in Qingdao, China. We carried out a retrospective study enrolling 116 HFRS patients as the case group and 373 healthy subjects as the control group. ABO blood type distribution was analysed using the C

In Vitro Anti-Orthohantavirus Activity of the High-and Low-Molecular-Weight Fractions of Fucoidan from the Brown Alga Fucus evanescens.

The Hantaan orthohantavirus (genovariant Amur-AMRV) is a rodent-borne zoonotic virus; it is the causative agent of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in humans. The currently limited therapeutic options require the development of effective anti-orthohantavirus drugs. The ability of native fucoidan from Fucus evanescens (FeF) and its enzymatically prepared high-molecular-weight (FeHMP) and low-molecular-weight (FeLMP) fractions to inhibit different stages of AMRV infection in Vero cells was studied. The structures of derivatives obtained were determined using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR

Development and design of the Hantavirus registry - HantaReg - for epidemiological studies, outbreaks and clinical studies on hantavirus disease.

BACKGROUND: Frequent outbreaks around the globe and endemic appearance in different parts of the world emphasize the substantial risk of hantavirus diseases. Increasing incidence rates, trends of changing distribution of hantavirus species and new insights into clinical courses of hantavirus diseases call for multinational surveillance. Furthermore, evidence-based guidelines for the management of hantavirus diseases and scoring systems, which allow stratification of patients into risk categories, are lacking. METHODS: Hantavirus registry (HantaReg) is a novel registry platform facilitating mu

Influence of Climatic Factors on Human Hantavirus Infections in Latin America and the Caribbean: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: With the current climate change crisis and its influence on infectious disease transmission there is an increased desire to understand its impact on infectious diseases globally. Hantaviruses are found worldwide, causing infectious diseases such as haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS)/hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in tropical regions such as Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). These regions are inherently vulnerable to climate change impacts, infectious disease outbreaks and natural disasters. Hantaviruses are zoonoti
