PURPOSE: To describe a case of orbital cellulitis arising in a patient treated with an anti-TNFalpha agent.
DESIGN: Single interventional case report.
METHODS: A 42-year-old man developed severe unilateral orbital cellulitis while receiving infliximab (Remicade, Centocor) treatment for Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) as part of the open-label phase of a trial conducted at our tertiary referral center. Cultures grew Staphylococcus aureus.
RESULTS: Infliximab treatment was stopped and the patient made a full recovery after receiving appropriate antibiotic therapy. Infliximab therapy was resumed a

We present an intriguing case report of a septicemic post-elective surgical staphylococcal knee arthritis and cellulitis which did not respond to long-term courses of associated rifampicin and teicoplanin or vancomycin despite apparently favourable in vitro susceptibility assays, but rapidly resolved after i.v. followed by oral administration of linezolid. The lack of response to a two-week course of glycopeptides cannot be explained by the in vitro mimimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC90) of involved organisms, which showed full susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus to vancomycin and teico

Relapsing polychondritis is a rare disease most commonly presenting as inflammation of the cartilage of the ears and nose. Auricular chondritis, with red ears resembling infectious cellulitis, is the most common initial finding. Antibodies to type II collagen in cartilage are found, and the earlobes are classically spared. Chronic disease may result in a flabby, droopy ear, cauliflower ear, or saddle nose deformity. Acute involvement of the tracheal cartilage may cause collapse of the airway with obstruction and pulmonary infections. Arthritis may be oligoarticular or polyarticular, most often

An approximately 2-month-old, reproductively intact female Domestic Shorthair kitten was presented to the Mississippi Veterinary Research and Diagnostic Laboratory with a history of possible trauma to the left shoulder region while playing with children, and was found dead the following day. Marked swelling, with subcutaneous edema and hemorrhages, was observed in the left forelimb. Severe pleocellular, but largely suppurative cellulitis, fasciitis, and interstitial myositis with edema were observed microscopically in sections from the affected limb. Massive numbers of gram-positive diplococci

OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of subcutaneous extralesional triamcinolone acetonide injection versus conservative treatment for chalazion.
DESIGN: Randomised controlled trial.
SETTING: Eye clinics of two regional hospitals in Hong Kong.
PATIENTS: Patients over 18 years old presenting with primary chalazion were randomised into two groups. In group 1, 12 patients were treated with lid hygiene, warm compresses, and chloramphenicol 1% ointment 4 times a day. In group 2, 16 patients were treated with 0.3 mL triamcinolone acetonide (10 mg/mL) injection to the subcutaneous tissue extralesion

BACKGROUND: Laser, radiofrequency and microwave are common techniques for local destruction of liver tumours by thermal ablation. The main limitation of thermal ablation treatment is the volume of necrosis that can be achieved. Blood flow occlusion is commonly advocated as an adjunct to thermal ablation to increase the volume of tissue necrosis based on macroscopic and histological assessment of immediate or direct thermal injury. This study examines the impact of blood flow occlusion on direct and indirect laser induced thermal liver injury in a murine model using histochemical methods to ass

Giant cell arteritis is a rare systemic vasculitis affecting large- and medium-sized arteries. Focal arteries lesions, include mononuclear cells infiltration of the vessel wall with giant cell formation. It is a disease of elderly persons and can result in a wide variety of systemic, neurological and ophthalmic complications, due to ischemia. The incidence of visual loss and ocular involvement varies between 14-88%, but one of the most common and severe complications is anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. The other ocular ischemic lesions include: central retinal artery occlusion, choroidal is

BACKGROUND: To report a case of severe acute retinal necrosis syndrome (ARN) associated with initial features of orbital cellulitis.
METHODS: A 49-year-old immunocompetent woman presented with unilateral painful orbital inflammation associated with deep visual loss due to ARN. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for detection of viral DNA was applied to ocular fluids. Immunohistochemistry for detection of viral antigens and histopathologic studies were performed on orbital biopsy specimens.
RESULTS: HSV-2 DNA was detected by PCR in ocular fluids. Orbital biopsy disclosed non-specific inflammatio

Patients with orbital cellulitis present to emergency departments occasionally. Symptoms usually develop rapidly, with patients being distressed by painful ocular movements and systemic upset. The case of a 24-year-old man who had a 1-month gradual history of intermittent periorbital swelling after a flu-like illness, and subsequently developed a large intracranial extradural abscess eroding through the temporal bone, ultimately requiring neurosurgical intervention is presented. Although orbital and periorbital swelling is common after acute sinusitis, cellulitis and intracranial abscess are r

We report a case with orbital cellulitis and irreversible visual loss caused by asymptomatic acute sinusitis in a patient without symptoms or history of sinusitis. The prompt use of intravenous antibiotics in combination with early surgical drainage may prevent irreversible visual loss in the affected eye, and threatened visual loss in the fellow eye can be reduced.

Cutaneous cryptococcosis caused by C. gattii, in immunocompent patients is a rare manifestation of disease, and may be one of the first manifestations of disseminated cryptococcosis. We report a case of disseminated cryptococcosis caused by Cryptococcus gattii presenting as cutaneous lesions in an immunocompetent patient. Previously to our report, only five cases of cutaneous involvement by Cryptococcus gattii in immunocompetent patients have been reported in the literature. Risk factors for C. gattii infection included exposure to the eucalypt reservoirs in tropical and subtropical areas. Ski

Congenital nasolacrimal obstruction is a common disorder in infants that results in persistent tearing and may lead to infections, such as dacryocystitis, orbital cellulitis, and bacterial conjunctivitis. The true incidence of this disorder in healthy newborns remains controversial. The most frequently quoted number of 6% comes from a study of 200 consecutive live births in the 1940s in which nasolacrimal patency was assessed by the presence or absence of discharge on compression of the lacrimal sac. Estimates from other studies, which often use different criteria for diagnosis, vary considera

Eosinophilic cellulitis (Wells' syndrome) is a rare condition of unknown etiology and pathogenesis. It is characterized by erythematous plaques and a histological picture of dermal eosinophilic infiltration with "flame figures". The typical clinical presentation of eosinophilic cellulitis is mildly pruritic cellulite-like plaques. Urticarial, vesiculo-bullous, nodular and papulonodular variants were also reported. Herein, we describe a patient with annular and semicircular manifestations of eosinophilic cellulitis. It was treated successfully with low-dose cyclosporine A treatment.

Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) has become a valuable and safe option in the treatment of varicose veins. Although long-term results are lacking, most patients seem to benefit in the short-term from EVLT. Reported postoperative complications are limited, consisting usually of pain, ecchymosis, induration, phlebitis, or spot skin burn injuries. The most feared complication is an extension of the saphenous thrombus into the femoral vein, with possible pulmonary embolism. Here we report a septic thrombophlebitis after EVLT resulting in a phlegmonous infection of the whole leg that was treated b
