INTRODUCTION: Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) results from reactivation of latent varicella-zoster virus in the geniculate ganglion, typically presenting with otalgia, auricular vesicles, and ipsilateral facial palsy. While systemic immunosuppression is a recognized trigger, RHS following local corticosteroid injection is exceedingly rare.
CASE REPORT: We report a 55-year-old woman who developed classical RHS 4 days after ultrasound-guided bilateral intra-articular triamcinolone injections for knee osteoarthritis. She received early oral acyclovir and achieved full recovery within 6 months.

Accurate classification and staging of skin diseases such as monkeypox, chickenpox, and measles are critical for timely clinical intervention, particularly in resource-limited settings. We present a proof-of-concept Quantum-Enhanced Multimodal Prognostic Transformer (Q-MPT) that integrates dermoscopic images with patient metadata, including age and lesion location, to predict disease type and progression stage jointly. The architecture combines a Vision Transformer backbone with a metadata fusion pathway and a lightweight quantum layer designed to enhance feature representation. To approximate

A patient initially presents with an abnormal sensation on the tip of her nose, followed by the appearance of a localized redness and oedematous macule progressively evolving into a necrotic lesion at follow-up. This dermatological finding is known as the Hutchinson's Sign, a reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus along the nasociliary branch of the fifth cranial nerve. Hutchinson's sign can be associated with a risk of ocular involvement, and requires immediate systemic treatment. Ophthalmologic referral is recommended in cases of clinical suspicion of ocular globe involvement.

Kidney transplantation is considered the gold standard treatment for patients with end-stage kidney disease. Historically, outcomes in kidney transplantation have been focused on reducing rates of rejection as the dominant cause of graft loss. However, managing the risk of rejection with infection continues to be a delicate balancing act for transplant physicians. It has long been recognised that viruses are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in immunosuppressed patients with significant implications for kidney graft function and patient outcomes worldwide. This is a review article

Varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection is typically mild in children but may result in severe complications in some cases. Environmental lead exposure is known to impair immune function; however, its relationship with VZV-specific humoral immunity has not been well characterized. We analyzed data from 7,938 participants aged 6-19 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2004 to examine the association between blood lead levels (BLL) and VZV IgG concentrations. Multivariable linear regression models were used to evaluate this association, and dose-response r

Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV), following an initial chicken pox infection earlier in life, can occasionally reactivate in dorsal nerve root ganglia to cause shingles, classically diagnosed by a vesicular skin eruption/rash in a single dermatome. We report a sudden death of an elderly woman with shingles of the left upper chest and axilla. A post mortem examination identified the cause of death as giant cell myocarditis, and VZV was identified in myocardial tissue. This is the first example in the literature of shingles associated with histologically-proven giant cell myocarditis and fatality in

To assess the impact of implementing a two-dose varicella vaccine (VarV) immunization recommendation program on the incidence of varicella in Chongqing, China. Monthly reported varicella cases from 2011 to 2023 were extracted from the National Notifiable Diseases Reporting System (NNDRS), alongside the vaccination records from the Chongqing Immunization Planning Information Management System. The interrupted time series analysis (ITS) was employed to study the epidemiological trends of varicella. The average reported annual incidence of varicella in Chongqing was 69.6 per 100,000 population du

BACKGROUND: Varicella has been subject to mandatory reporting to the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention (CISDCP) by health agencies within 24 h of diagnosis since 2019. However, even if two-dose varicella vaccination has been recommended to be administered to children at 1 and 4 years of age in Hangzhou since 2014, emerging evidence of increasing breakthrough varicella cases in outbreaks challenges the present varicella vaccination schedule and its protective effect. We seek to identify hotspot areas and temporal trends of varicella at the township level in Hangzhou in

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a common but often underdiagnosed cause of hepatitis in both the general population and transplant patients. Diagnosis is usually made by detecting IgM anti-HEV antibodies, with immunosuppressed individuals being at higher risk for chronic infection. We present the case of a 56-year-old man who developed asymptomatic liver cytolysis 4 months after a kidney transplant, with no significant physical findings or relevant epidemiological history. Abdominal ultrasound revealed hepatic steatosis. Drug-induced liver injury was suspected, prompting the discontinuation of pote

BACKGROUND: Umbilical disorders in neonates are frequently benign, with umbilical granulomas, hernias, and transient inflammatory changes representing the majority of presentations. However, persistent or atypical umbilical findings may signal rare congenital anomalies originating from incomplete involution of the urachus or the omphalomesenteric duct. Early recognition of these conditions is crucial to avoid misdiagnosis, unnecessary antibiotic exposure, or delayed referral.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We describe a 27-day-old term newborn, previously healthy, who initially presented with a single ves

Arterial thrombosis in an immunocompetent adult is rarely associated with varicella infection. Anticoagulation with warfarin stabilised the disease, homocysteine levels normalised, and therapy could be safely discontinued after three months, with full clinical recovery, preventing unnecessary long-term anticoagulation.

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) establishes latency in neuronal ganglia following primary infection and can later reactivate as herpes zoster. Disseminated zoster may occur in some cases and is characterized by vesicular lesions appearing beyond the initially affected dermatome. When the ophthalmic branch of the trigeminal nerve is involved, herpes zoster ophthalmicus can develop and may lead to a range of ocular complications. Neurological sequelae are less common, and orbital apex syndrome represents a rare but potentially severe manifestation. This syndrome involves dysfunction of the optic ne

Herpetic ocular infections after solid organ transplantation are uncommon but carry disproportionate risks of morbidity, vision loss, and mortality. The widespread use of modern immunosuppressive regimens and antiviral prophylaxis has reshaped their epidemiology, yet it has not eliminated the risk. Cytomegalovirus retinitis remains the most prototypical and vision-threatening manifestation, increasingly presenting as late-onset disease after cessation of prophylaxis or treatment for rejection. Herpetic ocular syndromes, including acute retinal necrosis caused by herpes simplex and varicella-zo

BACKGROUND: Current Oka strain varicella vaccines are generally safe but may cause latent neuronal infections leading to herpes zoster in some vaccinees. A novel v7D candidate vaccine has been developed to prevent varicella and reduce these risks.
METHODS: This randomized, double-blind, controlled, phase 2b clinical trial was conducted in Jiangsu, China. Healthy children 1-12 years old with no history of varicella infection or vaccination were enrolled and randomly assigned to 0-3-/6-month schedule for low/medium dose. Phase 2a participants (3-12 years of age) previously receiving low-/medium

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The advent of targeted therapies, such as biologic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMARDs) and Janus kinase inhibitors (JAKi), has revolutionized the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients who do not respond adequately to conventional disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (csDMARDs). Concerns have been raised about the increased risk of infections, especially herpes zoster (HZ). The association between JAKi treatment and HZ remains complex. The objective of this study was to assess the risk of HZ among RA patients in our Rheumatoid Arthritis Saudi Databas

Herpes zoster (HZ) is the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus and usually causes unilateral dermatomal vesicles; deep tissue involvement is uncommon. We report a 76-year-old man who, 12 days after classic right-flank HZ in the T11 dermatome, developed a painless right-sided abdominal bulge. Examination found a soft, non-pitting swelling. Computed tomography demonstrated ipsilateral thinning of the abdominal wall muscles without evidence of a fascial defect, true hernia, or mass, consistent with zoster-related segmental motor neuropathy presenting as an abdominal pseudohernia. He was man

BACKGROUND: Disseminated herpes zoster (DHZ) is defined by the involvement of more than two non-contiguous dermatomes or the presence of at least 20 lesions beyond the primary affected dermatome. The varicella-zoster virus (VZV) can lead to disseminated infection when the host's immune response is insufficient to halt cell-associated viremia. This study aimed to summarize the clinical characteristics and potential risk factors associated with DHZ and to identify and assess factors related to prognosis to enhance the prevention and management strategies for DHZ patients.
METHODS: The demograph
