BACKGROUND: Pemphigus is identified by the intercellular deposition of immunoglobulin IgG on direct immunofluorescence (DIF) within skin, hair follicles, and oral mucosa. The objective of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of DIF in hair, oral mucosal scrapes, and Tzanck smears, with DIF of skin serving as the reference standard.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study included patients with clinically suspected pemphigus (n=70) selected through non-probability sampling and compared them with age-matched controls (n=70) who had non-pemphigus bullous les

Pemphigus, including its main subtypes of pemphigus vulgaris, pemphigus foliaceus and paraneoplastic autoimmune multiorgan syndrome (formally known as paraneoplastic pemphigus), is an autoimmune blistering disease which is characterized by acantholysis resulting from autoantibodies targeting epithelial cell surface antigens. Elderly patients with pemphigus face unique challenges pertaining to diagnostics and therapeutics. This review focuses on the special considerations which relate to the care of this patient group.

Drug-induced pemphigus (DIP) is a rare autoimmune blistering disorder most commonly associated with thiol-containing drugs such as penicillamine, captopril, and bucillamine. However, additional medications are increasingly recognized in the nonthiol nonphenol group. While some cases require treatment with corticosteroids or immunosuppressants, in certain instances, simply discontinuing the offending drug is sufficient. We report a unique case of drug-induced pemphigus foliaceus (DIPF) potentially triggered by piperacillin-tazobactam and/or linezolid in a 69-year-old female patient on the 10th

Senear-Usher syndrome, or pemphigus erythematosus (PE), is a rare autoimmune disorder characterized by the coexistence of features from both lupus erythematosus (LE) and pemphigus foliaceus (PF). We describe a 41-year-old patient initially diagnosed with cutaneous and then systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), who after a few years developed new skin lesions: erythematous and erosive eruptions partially covered by crusts located on the trunk and flaccid blisters on the extremities. Direct immunofluorescence of perilesional skin revealed deposits of IgG in the intercellular space of the epidermis

Pemphigus is a rare and life-threatening autoimmune disease that is easily ignored in children. This study aimed to attract attention to pemphigus in the paediatric population for better understanding and recognition of the clinical characteristics and management in children's different subtypes of pemphigus. The case series involved a retrospective record review of 3 patients who were referred to a department of dermatology from January 2022 to January 2024. All patients experienced a delayed diagnosis, but were eventually definitively diagnosed with pemphigus vulgaris, pemphigus foliaceus, a

Background Pemphigus is a rare autoimmune blistering disorder characterized by involvement of the skin and mucous membranes, primarily due to autoantibodies targeting desmogleins. Emerging evidence has pointed to a potential pathogenic role of antimuscarinic acetylcholine receptor (anti-M-AChR) antibodies and reported a correlation between their titers and pemphigus disease activity. However, data on this association, particularly in relation to different phases of pulse therapy in the Indian context, remain limited. Aim This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between anti-M-AChR antibody

Pemphigus erythematosus, also known as Senear-Usher syndrome, is a rare localized variant of pemphigus foliaceus characterized by superficial blistering in seborrheic regions and immunopathologic overlap with systemic lupus erythematosus. This report describes an otherwise healthy 33-year-old woman with no significant past medical history presenting with widespread erosive plaques and crusted lesions predominantly in seborrheic areas, positive desmoglein-1 antibodies, positive antinuclear antibody (ANA), and histopathology consistent with intraepidermal acantholysis. Our patient demonstrated c

Background Pemphigus and pemphigoid disorders, as well as dermatitis herpetiformis, are all part of the diverse group of conditions known as autoimmune vesiculobullous/blistering disorders (AIBDs). These disorders are caused by autoantibodies that target intercellular or cell-matrix adhesion proteins and are clinically characterized by blisters or erosions of the skin and/or mucous membranes. The incidence peaks at 30-60 years with an equal incidence in men and women. There are 0.1 to 0.5 cases of pemphigus for every 100,000 people. Materials and methods This single-center retrospective observ

BACKGROUND: Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) play a critical function in the development of tumors and are associated with protumor M2 phenotypes. Shifting TAMs towards antitumor M1 phenotypes holds promise for tumor immunotherapy. Oleamide, a primary fatty acid amide, has emerged as a potent anticancer and immunomodulatory compound. However, the regulatory effects of oleamide on TAM phenotypes remain unclear.
METHODS: We used real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) techniques to study the influence of o

OBJECTIVES: Although in scleroderma renal crisis (SRC) outcome has improved to a great extent with the introduction of ACE inhibitors, there remains significant mortality and morbidity with frequent requirement for renal replacement therapy. Therefore, novel biomarkers to identify patients at high risk of poor outcome would be valuable. The aim of this study was to assess the role of the N terminal fragment of pro Brain Natriuretic Peptide (N-TproBNP) as predictor of outcome in SRC.
METHODS: 20 subjects with confirmed SRC were retrospectively enrolled. Clinical data, full blood count, creatin

BACKGROUND: Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and pemphigus foliaceus (PF) are potentially life-threatening autoimmune blistering diseases. Treatment is based on long-term immunosuppression with high doses of glucocorticosteroids in combination with potentially corticosteroid-sparing agents and/or rituximab. Immunoadsorption (IA) has emerged as a fast-acting adjuvant treatment option.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the clinical efficacy of IA in addition to best medical treatment (BMT).
METHODS: We conducted a multicentre (26 centres from Germany and Austria) randomized controlled trial in 72 patients with new

BACKGROUND: The success of immunotherapy has made it a lifesaving treatment, but not without side effects. Currently, the risk factors for developing immune-related adverse events (irAEs) in patients who receive immunotherapy are poorly understood, and there is no risk-stratifying mechanism for potentially fatal irAEs. It is postulated that oncology patients with preexisting autoimmune diseases are likely to have flares on immunotherapy. However, some patients develop de novo autoimmune conditions on immunotherapy without a prior history. Literature reports have postulated that human leukocyte

Pemphigus, an autoimmune intraepidermal bullous disease group with roughly eight distinct forms, includes pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and pemphigus foliaceus (PF) as its predominant global forms. Despite the increased utilization of global health records and reporting systems, epidemiological data remain limited and poorly categorized. Therefore, this study aimed to conduct a review to track, identify, and characterize cases of PV and PF published and categorized worldwide. A research question was formulated; studies were selected based on the inclusion criteria; and data from these publications w

A 9-month-old mixed-breed dog developed generalised pustular dermatitis, accompanied by lethargy and hyperthermia, 7 days after oral fluralaner administration. Dermatopathological and microbiological evaluations were consistent with a pustular acantholytic dermatitis. A 4-month course of immunosuppressive therapy resulted in complete remission of lesions, which did not recur after therapy was withdrawn.
