In humans, the pemphigus denomination encompasses a group of autoimmune blistering skin diseases with intraepidermal separation resulting from cell-cell detachment by acantholysis. Entities are classified based on the level of blistering in the epidermis, and both superficial (pemphigus foliaceus, IgA pemphigus) and deep (pemphigus vulgaris, pemphigus vegetans and paraneoplastic pemphigus) variants are recognized. OBJECTIVE: To study cases of low-dose methotrexate-induced pancytopenia with special reference to clinical outcome and factors predisposing to bone marrow suppression.
METHODS: Patient files of 14 cases of methotrexate-induced pancytopenia reported to the National Agency for Medicines in Finland from 1991 to 1999 were reviewed. A review of four additional cases was included.

A 3.5-year-old, spayed female, chow chow presented with a pruritic, ulcerative, butterfly lesion on the nasal planum, typical of the pemphigus complex. Pemphigus erythematosus was diagnosed by histopathologic examination. Treatment consisted of enrofloxacin and immunosuppressive therapy with prednisone and azathioprine. Within 5 wk of treatment, the lesions had resolved almost completely.

Cyclosporin has been increasingly used for the treatment of skin diseases in small animals. Reported uses include the treatment of atopy, cutaneous lupus erythematosus, feline acquired alopecia resembling pseudopelade of humans, pemphigus erythematosus, pemphigus foliaceus, perianal fistulae and sebaceous adenitis. A 52-year-old Chinese man was found to have a benign thymoma and pemphigus erythematosus (PE). Initially, most of his skin lesions appeared on the scars of the surgical incisions and suture sites three months after he underwent thymectomy. To our knowledge, this is the first report documenting the skin lesions of PE on the scars after thymectomy. Most of the previous cases had myasthenia gravis and skeletal muscle antibodies. However, in this patient, neither condition was present.

METHODS: All new cases of pemphigus seen in the Dermatology Clinic at the University of Catania during the period January 1982 to June 1996 were studied retrospectively.

Trichophytosis is a rare diagnosis in dogs in Ontario, but recently 4 dogs with a scaling and crusting, alopecic, facial dermatitis have been so diagnosed. In all cases, the histopathological findings of severe epidermal and follicular interface dermatitis, accompanied by an acantholytic intraepidermal pustular dermatitis suggested an immune-mediated disease.
