PURPOSE: Ocular mucous membrane pemphigoid (OcMMP) leads to fibrosis of the conjunctiva with potential sequelae. Our objective was to describe biopsies from patients with OcMMP and identify biopsy characteristics associated with fibrosis and sequelae.
METHODS: Patients with histologically confirmed OcMMP were selected. Fibrosis grades were defined according to Foster's stages. The subjects were divided into two groups: early stages (0 and 1) versus later stages (2, 3, and 4). A Cox multivariate analysis was performed to determine whether immunofluorescence deposits were associated with sequel

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

PURPOSE: Symptom management in Ocular Cicatricial Pemphigoid (OCP) is challenging because of the progressive factors of dry eye, scarring, trichiasis, and vision impairment. We set out to evaluate the benefits and therapeutic effects of scleral contact lenses in the management of OCP.
METHODS: A retrospective review was performed over a database of 20 patients (36 eyes) fitted with scleral lenses (SL) at the Department of Ophthalmology, Emory University from May 2018 to April 2021. The fitting indications, time required for ocular surface stabilization, vision rehabilitation success, and ocul

Ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP) is a chronic systemic autoimmune dermatosis characterized by progressive and fibrosing inflammation of the conjunctiva. We report the case of a 54-year-old female patient who presented with bilateral and progressive visual acuity loss. Clinical examination revealed trichiasis, bilateral symblepharon, bilateral superficial punctate keratitis, corneal opacity, and bilateral cataracts. Systemic evaluation identified erosive gingivitis and scarred bullous lesions. Histopathological and immunofluorescence examinations confirmed the diagnosis of OCP. The patient w

Background and Clinical Significance: Ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP) is a rare autoimmune disease affecting the conjunctiva and oral mucosa. Chronic inflammation causes conjunctival scarring, leading to symblepharon, trichiasis, corneal damage, and possible blindness. Diagnosis is clinical, supported by biopsy and immunofluorescence. Treatment includes systemic corticosteroids, immunosuppressants, and biologics in refractory cases. Case Presentation: A 64-year-old male presented with ocular irritation, trichiasis, and counting fingers (CF) visual acuity in the left eye. Slit-lamp examinat

The eyelid skin represents a unique anatomical and immunological interface between the external environment and the ocular surface. Due to its structural delicacy, dense vascularization, and continuous exposure to microbial and environmental antigens, it is a primary target of inflammatory and autoimmune processes. This review aims to synthesize current molecular insights into eyelid skin inflammation, with particular emphasis on autoimmune mechanisms. We discuss autoimmune diseases such as ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, pemphigus, discoid and systemic lupus erythematosus, and thyroid-associat

Various inflammatory diseases can occur in the eyelids. Infectious disorders - such as staphylococcal or demodex blepharitis, dermatological diseases such as seborrheic dermatitis, ocular rosacea or ocular cicatricial pemphigoid and rheumatological diseases such as dermatomyositis or sarcoidosis - are just some of these aetiologies. Clinically, these causes of blepharitis can manifest in inflammation of the eyelid margin with collarettes around the eyelash follicles, madarosis, meibomian gland dysfunction, erythema, and nodular tumour. Even if the clinical differential diagnosis between the va

Cicatricial changes secondary to conjunctivitis associated with pemphigoid can include subconjunctival fibrosis, forniceal shortening, symblepharon with resultant entropion and trichiasis. This can ultimately lead to limbal stem cell deficiency and irreversible corneal keratopathy. Herein, we present a case series of three patients at a single academic institution between 2022 and 2024 that underwent botulinum toxin-A injection for lower eyelid cicatricial entropion as a temporizing treatment due to active cicatrizing conjunctivitis. All patients reported subjective improvement in ocular irrit

Ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP) is considered to be a subtype of Mucous Membrane Pemphigoid (MMP). OCP is a type of autoimmune conjunctivitis that leads to scarring of the conjunctiva. Untreated OCP can lead to irreversible ophthalmic damage, to the point of blindness. In this article, we will discuss the case of a patient who has been under follow-up for over a decade at a corneal clinic due to OCP disease and as a result underwent various treatments. Prior to that, a short literature review will be presented on the subject including the etiology, pathophysiology, epidemiology, presentati

We report a rare case of ocular sarcoidosis presenting as bilateral cicatricial conjunctivitis, initially misdiagnosed as ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP). A 69-year-old woman presented with a five-year history of chronic bilateral ocular irritation, trichiasis, conjunctival injection, and progressive cicatrization. She had previously undergone a conjunctival biopsy at an outside facility several years prior, which was reported without abnormal findings. Despite treatment with topical cyclosporine, artificial tears, and dapsone for presumed OCP, her symptoms persisted. A repeat conjunctival
